Trump defends shutdown threat after clashing with Pelosi, Schumer - CNNPolitics (Dec 11)
"I'll tell you what, I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck," Trump told the top Senate Democrat. "So, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it."

...
"I don't mind having the issue of border security on my side. If we have to shut down the country over border security, I actually like that," Trump said, even as he characterized his meeting with Schumer and Pelosi as "friendly." "It's something the country needs. It's common sense. The country needs it."

Schumer: Trump's 'temper tantrum' over wall funding is leading to shutdown (Dec 16)
Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” just five days before funding deadline to keep several key federal agencies open, Schumer, D-N.Y., said that he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., are standing firm in their offers to Trump and that it’s up to the president to come to the table.

"We Democrats, Leader Pelosi and I, offered the president two options as to how to avoid the shutdown,” he said.

“We should not let a temper tantrum, threats, push us in the direction of doing something even our Republicans colleagues know is wrong."

In reversal, White House shifts border wall funding demands - CNNPolitics (Dec 18)
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders suggested Tuesday that the White House has found an alternative way to get its requested $5 billion in funding for a US-Mexico border wall, marking a reversal from President Donald Trump's previous position.

McConnell announces stopgap funding bill to avert shutdown - ABC News (Dec 19)
"Later this morning, we’ll introduce a continuing resolution that will ensure continuous funding for the federal government. The measure will provide the resources necessary to continue normal operations through February 8th," McConnell said on the Senate floor.

...
But McConnell's announcement also came with a dig at his colleagues across the aisle.

“I’m sorry that my Democratic colleagues couldn’t put partisanship aside and show the same good-faith flexibility that the President has shown in order to provide the resources our nation needs to secure the integrity of our borders and the safety of American families," McConnell said. "But this seems to be the reality of our political moment. It seems like political spite for the president may be winning out over sensible policy -- even sensible policies that are more modest than border security allocations which many Democrats supported themselves, in the recent past."

I'm tired of these politicians playing "Chicken" with government funding.

Trump tells lawmakers he won’t sign deal to avert shutdown, demands funds for border security
The Senate unanimously passed a spending bill Wednesday night that would fund many federal agencies through February 8, following days of acrimony after Democrats refused to advance any new funding for a wall along the Mexico border.

House Republican leaders had hoped to advance an identical measure on Thursday morning, but they were met with an insurrection from some of their most conservative members and a blizzard of negative coverage from right-wing media outlets. That led Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to cancel a press conference and head to the White House for a meeting with Trump over how to proceed.

...
Update: President Trump has told House Republicans he will not sign legislation that would avert a partial government shutdown, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said Thursday.

Trump’s opposition upends a deal that would have kept the government open through Feb. 8 but would not give the president any new money for a border wall or other border security measures.

Trump’s opposition dramatically increases the chances of a government shutdown, which is set to start at the end of Friday unless Congress and Trump reach a deal to extend funding for the Department of Homeland Security and other major federal agencies.
What a jerk.

It seems that the Senate will likely have a veto-proof majority, but that rebellion makes it hard to say about the House.

Well, there's still an entire day so Trump can change his mind at least eight or nine different times before he needs to make a decision.

Trump loses big on this. He went from "I'd be proud" to shutdown the Government to a meek... 'nevermind'. Of course, with Pelosi in charge of the House, he can just blame the Democrats for a shutdown late, but McConnell probably doesn't want to risk that... hence him not allowing a shutdown this time around.

And congrats to the Republicans... who have control of everything... and still can't pass an annual budget.

Yup. He heard Steve doocy on Fox and friends claim that trump was betraying his base again. Fuck me. Stupid idiots.

But shut it down. For weeks. Nay for months. America deserves trump. They need to really experience his presidency. Hope the markets crash even more. Fuck 'em all.

Unfortunately, the markets crashing is mostly going to hurt the middle class. It's already having a significant impact on me. :(

I need to dip into some savings to pay for relocation and deal with a bunch of family stuff, and if I take out, say $10k to pay for things now, it's already the equivalent of having to take out almost $18k if it were just 6 weeks ago. :(

So umm... Trump won't sign the bill and the House won't pass it because of that. If the House passes the Senate bill, Trump doesn't need to sign it to become law, though a certain amount of time must pass (apparently 10 days, and Congress must stay in session). I haven't checked, but I can only imagine the downward slope of the DOW chart just got sharper.

ETA: Have checked, not sharply downward yet. Time might be needed for it to make its way to the floor.

Also, Paul Ryan has no balls.

What exactly IS a "Government Shutdown"? Is it as dramatic as it sounds? Your cities will become anarchy with no police, fire department, schools, hospitals, or even military? Methinks the label is more dramatic than what is actually at stake?

It doesn't sound like much

A lot of key things are already funded and anything marked as essential get funded anyways. However, it's also completely discretionary what's considered "essential", so Trump could randomly decide to play hardball and determine that air traffic controllers aren't essential anymore and shut down air traffic in the country.

The label is "PARTIAL government shutdown". In theory, essential services will remain in place, but even that isn't clear. Trump's strategy now seems to be to sow chaos wherever he can. He still has enough enablers among wackadoodle right wingers in the House to sustain his madness. Once they are reduced in size by the January changeover, it is possible that Democrats and Republicans will be able to cobble together veto-proof compromises to reopen the government and maybe even get some work done. Unless they find some way to get rid of Clown Prince Trump, this mess will likely just go from worse to worser. We will have to wait until last Republican crazies to finally find the strength to abandon the guy, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Really? What are you invested in that's lost over 40% of its value in the past 6 weeks? "Free Mike Flynn" T-shirts?

Sears would be a good example.

If the Republicans in the House and the Senate have any intelligence, they ought to pass the bill and let Trump take the blame. Otherwise, whether they like it or not, the GOP will take justly the blame.
That’s the thing, they might have intelligence, but they have no principals. Remember when the world was literally falling into a Great Depression? The Republicans voted against what stopped it from going there, because ummm...?

The Republicans can pass this in both Houses, but they aren’t for fear of either a Veto or having to stay in DC through Dec 30th. And if Trump doesn’t Veto it, he certainly can Pocket Veto it because Congress won’t stay in DC merely to fund the Government.

Also, FFVC has pretty much ended any NAFTA II deal as clearly he can’t be trusted with all of the posturing and public lying over our own Domestic budget.

Also, fuck the GOP. May Ryan and McConnell choke to death on turkey on Xmas. To hell with the entire party. They make Hillary Clinton look principled.

I heard there was 1.5 billion in the pending legislation for border security, just not for the wall.
