This seems to be a common thread on both sides of the Atlantic - There's this explicit concern that action in the national interest cannot be contemplated because of the threat of violence from right wing nationalists.
Trump cannot be impeached, because there would be civil unrest. Brexit cannot be cancelled, or even put to a secod vote now that we know more about what it looks like, because there would be civil unrest.
How fucking cowardly are we? The threat of violence (and it is right now just a rumour of a possible threat), should never be sufficient to prevent our governments from doing the right thing.
Bring it on, I say. If these arseholes really want to take to the streets and engage in violent action against the state or the people, let them come out into the open, and be crushed.
If we cannot do the right thing for fear of violence, then the rule of law has already been subverted by those who advocate the use of violence - without a shot being fired. Fuck that.
If the neo-fascists think they can get their way by the use of violence, they can come and have a go if they think they're hard enough.

My sentiments exactly. I am about 99% sure that when Trump is defeated or impeached, the far-right Nazis will make a brief showing of force in the streets, then crawl back under their rocks, once a few of them are dispatched. It's not like these scumbags are profiles in courage - they're terrified of caravans of mothers and children. Their subsequent acts will serve to ensconce them in a list of terrorists. The sooner they become personae non grata, the better.

Winning the popular vote by 3 million, and barely loosing the electoral college because of of only a few thousand votes in a couple states is loosing badly? Then what do you call the Dem wins in the previous elections?

About 30 years ago, the GOP came up with this great idea.
The military has two pay allowances, for housing and food.
If you're living on base, eating in the galley, the military pays for your housing and food. If you move off base, they give you the money they would be spending.
The GOP wanted to just add all that to Base Pay. Simplify the paperwork, ease the administrative burden, and nnot incidentally making the allowances subject to taxation. We'd have actually gotten less money in the end.
The military liaisons to Congress thought about this for ten seconds and then decided, "That's great! You really should do that! We support that!"
The GOP was only seeing the immediate benefit of taxes.
Thing is, retirement pay at the time was 70% of base pay. Increase that by a few hundred bucks a month, that would increase our retirement pay by 70% of a few hundred bucks...for the rest of our lives. I mean, at that time, I had another 10 years to draw military pay (and pay those new taxes), And I have since drawn 20 years of retirement pay, with at least another 10 to go.
The legislation was quietly withdrawn after this was revealed to the legislators.
I would almost expect the Democrats to stop fighting the Emergency Declaration after Trump vetoes it. Start thanking the GOP for setting the precedent. "Just imagine what President Cortez or President Warren will do with these powers!"
Reproductive rights as a national emergency? Maybe cut military spending to pay for high-speed rail lines to help pregnant women travel to states where they have no problem getting an abortion....?

That action was the end of the Roman Republic, though it had been weakened by some decades of strife and civil war. Even without that extreme, it's something that may come back and bite its defenders. Imagine a Democratic President who is frustrated with Congressional Republicans. Imagine Elizabeth Warren vs. the banks, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez vs. the fossil-fuel companies, etc.
