Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

It doesn't matter where they make their request so long as it's legal for them to make it there. Which means it doesn't matter if they request entry from their home countries or at the US border. There's a process, and they are following it.

Just to note here that the only way to apply for asylum is to do so after crossing the border. It cannot be done in their home country or anywhere else. I think that would be a good case for changing the rules.

Again with her completely inappropriate hyperbole. And "abolish ICE". She wants illegals to have an even easier time to enter and stay in the US than they do now.

ICE Agents Left 5-Year-Old Children in a Parked Van for 39 Hours

... In the Texas sun. Why aren't these people being charged with child abuse?

I checked out AOC's Instagram account, and she recently showed off her visit to her NYC constituents.

At a district staff meeting, she and her colleagues played a card game involving Story Stitch cards. Green Card Voices » Story Stitch from Green Card Voices In this game, you draw a card then try to talk about something in that card. Like
 • Tell about a time when your life felt abundant
 • Tell about the last time you felt lonely
 • Tell about a significant story from your life that you will always remember
 • Tell a story of a time when your family or friends didn't understand you

She is also a stickler for efficiency, and she wants stuff written down for her.

AOC Responds to Democrats’ Bad ‘Boy Bye’ Tweet

On Saturday, the official Twitter account of the Democratic National Committee wrote a tweet so bad the entire United States of Very Online People came together in loud condemnation. How did the DNC do it? By combining a Beyoncé lyric (“Boy Bye”) with an opportunity for a new phone wallpaper (who would want this?): an incredibly superficial alternative to actual impeachment proceedings, containing the always-corny implication that the Democrats can be effective simply by not being Donald Trump. The tweet went viral. Critics are calling it “historically bad” and “an absolute masterpiece of a bad tweet.”
The Democrats on Twitter: "This is a whole mood. Text "Boy Bye" to 43367 to get this exclusive wallpaper. https://t.co/reWksgbNEz" / Twitter
I myself didn't understand it at all.

It was as bad as Hillary Clinton on Twitter: "How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less." / Twitter

AOC's response to that "Boy Bye" tweet was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "@TheDemocrats Someone didn’t go to my Twitter class" / Twitter
Ocasio-Cortez to Host Social Media Workshop for Reps back in January

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "The US ran concentration camps before, when we rounded up Japanese people during WWII. It is such a shameful history that we largely ignore it. These camps occur throughout history. Many refuse to learn from that shame, but here we are today. We have an obligation to end them. https://t.co/sYicLdcaA9" / Twitter noting Annalisa Merelli on Twitter: ".@aoc isn't expressing an opinion, she is stating a fact: Border detention centers *are* concentration camps. Trying to reject the label is not going to make the atrocity go away: https://t.co/SdFmfd3IaJ" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Not one dime should go to DHS for building these camps as they detain children & families. Congressional appropriations season is now. That means it’s 💰 time - we‘re voting to fund federal government programs. We should not fund the caging of kids & families. Pretty simple." / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Thank you, @RepJerryNadler. https://t.co/07A0H2uW9f" / Twitter noting (1) (((Rep. Nadler))) on Twitter: "One of the lessons from the Holocaust is ‘Never Again’ - not only to mass murder, but also to the dehumanization of people, violations of basic rights, and assaults on our common morality. We fail to learn that lesson when we don’t callout such inhumanity right in front of us. https://t.co/EEBBkVL7FG" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "DHS ripped 1000s of children from their parents & put them in cages w inhumane conditions. They call their cells “dog pounds” & “freezers.” I will never apologize for calling these camps what they are. If that makes you uncomfortable, fight the camps - not the nomenclature. https://t.co/eJpJWeYiot" / Twitter noting (1) The Hill on Twitter: "House GOP Leader: Ocasio-Cortez "needs to apologize not only to the nation but to the world" https://t.co/WMua72bgbj https://t.co/rsggE37Q2x" / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "What’s worse, Congress has asked DHS for documents on the whereabouts of children taken from their parents. We‘ve asked for details & records on camp conditions. DHS has refused to cooperate or provide Congress w/ the requested information. Why doesn’t that concern @HouseGOP?" / Twitter
Do they have something to hide?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Today we celebrate #Juneteenth, the day we celebrate the emancipation from slavery in the United States. And on this day, Congress held a hearing on reparations. A massive crowd showed up for it. Ta-Nehisi Coates’ opening statement is a stirring must-watch. ⬇️ https://t.co/hHfu2ciUXc" / Twitter noting ABC News on Twitter: "Ta-Nehisi Coates criticizes Mitch McConnell over his comments on reparations: "For a century after the Civil War black people were subjected to a relentless campaign of terror, a campaign that extended well into the lifetime of Majority leader McConnell" https://t.co/UjZHiEHxbx https://t.co/YUHZBpoTkg" / Twitter
I like Ta-Nehisi Coates's articles in The Atlantic.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "‘@tedlieu repeatedly asked [Sec. Pompeo’s advisor] if the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. He would not say "yes." Lieu submitted the Constitution for the record.’ 😂 https://t.co/VTd5ZElG8E" / Twitter

Still waiting for AOC to accept that 10 grand from Ben Shapiro to debate her. She could donate that money to a charity and improve some kids lives. But, nope. The embarrassment of her losing to Shapiro outweighs her kindness to do something with the money to help people. So sad.

You will be waiting until the Greek Kalends. Her response at the time: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Just like catcalling, I don’t owe a response to unsolicited requests from men with bad intentions. And also like catcalling, for some reason they feel entitled to one. https://t.co/rsD17Oq9qe" / Twitter I don't see any evidence that she has changed her mind. He is a Gish Galloper and an intellectual bully. I like how his BBC interviewer stood up to him and how he called that interviewer a left-winger.

It's pretty silly of AOC to compare a debate request to cat calling. That is what cemented my opinion of her as an insufferable idiot.

10 grand...for a children's charity! She said no. But, I thought she's a down to earth woman of the average working Joes.

Money isn't everything. Just because you can't think of anything you wouldn't do if you were paid enough, doesn't mean that others have equally expendable principles.

If the children's charity is relevant at all to this question, then Shapiro is the asshole for not simply donating it to them directly. Making his donation conditional on someone who owes him nothing, stroking his ego, is fucking vile. He should be ashamed of himself.

No, AOC refused to debate him calling the debate challenge a sexist remark, which is beyond stupid. I'm saying if she was so interested in helping people, she could take the 10 grand form Shapiro and donate it to charity. It's not a matter of, "she doesn't need the money!" It's a matter of she can help others less fortunate than herself, but she won't because she doesn't want to lose the debate.

Why would AOC debate Shapiro when he gets his panties in a twist even when dealing with other conservatives?

Are you even aware that your response didn't address the post to which it is responding?

You seem to have real difficulty with understanding even fairly simple English. Do you have a diagnosed learning difficulty?

Why would a congresswoman bother with a youtube polemicist who, by his own admission, merely views "debate" as a means to DESTROY his perceived opponents?

And who, as Patooka has noted, stormed off of an interview with another conservative? How about he just donate the money to charity and stop trying to date her?

As a rational person, AOC is doing a cost benefit analysis:
Benefit: there is some non-zero probability this guy will pay up. Expected value: 10k*p where p, the probability, has an unknown value.
Cost: de-legitimizes AOC in all of her future actions as the right-wing will propagandize this as a loss no matter what. Legitimizes and normalizes Shapiro so that his following increases. Ultimately, this makes AOC relatively less effective.

Clint Smith on Twitter: "“...if Thomas Jefferson matters, so does Sally Hemings..if D-Day matters, so does Black Wall Street...the question really is not whether we’ll be tied to the somethings of our past, but whether we are courageous enough to be tied to the whole of them.” https://t.co/MGY8KTFEDn" / Twitter noting PBS NewsHour on Twitter: ""Enslavement reigned for 250 years on these shores. When it ended, this country could've extended its hallowed principles — life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — to all, regardless of color," writer Ta-Nehisi Coates told Congress. "But America had other principles in mind" https://t.co/a1RYYhbSnq" / Twitter
More of TNC's statement. He made a flub about Civil-War soldiers living into "this century" when he meant the 20th cy. Also, the US had a brief period after the Civil War when black people were headed to full status: Reconstruction. But there was a backlash against it called Redemption, and the Federal Government did nothing to stop it, thus losing the peace for a century. Redemption included segregation, restrictive laws, and looking the other way at vigilante terrorism.

AOC continues to stand her ground on "concentration camp" comparisons.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "Well, @chucktodd - the fact that you slipped in “Nazi” when I never said that is pretty unfortunate. Almost as unfortunate as the fact that you spent this whole time w/o discussing DHS freezers, “dog pounds,” missing children, & human rights abuses that uphold use of this term. https://t.co/1eNuW1ZR0f" / Twitter noting Mehdi Hasan on Twitter: "This makes no sense - in one breath, Chuck Todd concedes that @AOC herself says she wasn’t referring to Nazi death camps, but in the next breath he condemns her for invoking “Nazi concentration camps” - which she didn’t. As he himself conceded only seconds earlier. Sigh. https://t.co/fkuC9uuvsn" / Twitter
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "My heroes are the ones who stood up when it wasn’t easy. Kids are dying in cages on our border. Families are being put in “freezers” & “dog pounds.” Years from now, people will look for the journalists, officials, & everyday people who stood up for what was right in real-time." / Twitter
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "We are calling these camps what they are because they fit squarely in an academic consensus and definition. History will be kind to those who stood up to this injustice. So say what you will. Kids are dying and I’m not here to make people feel comfortable about that." / Twitter

I recently watched the whole SXSW interview with AOC, and at around 46 minutes, she explained how she views debates. She does not expect to win in a debate, more like exchanging views and trying to understand others' viewpoints. Like trying to understand racists' viewpoints. She claims that several people have changed their mind as a result of talking to her, but that they have done so after thinking about what she said.

In America, people are considered innocent until proven guilty.

If you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that an asylum seeker lied on their application, then you can say they did something illegal. But if all they did was show up at the border and apply for entry, that's not a crime no matter how much it upsets some folks.

I agree that we have to modernize our immigration and work permit system, especially considering how easy it is these days for people to travel thousands of miles and cross multiple borders. But I don't see immigrants as a threat to our way of life or destined to be burdens on our society. They're just people like my grandfather, coming to America for a chance to improve their lives and that of their children. And we have plenty of room, especially where I live.

Then I'm sure you'd open your doors and welcome and feed and clothe a few dozen of these asylum seekers into your home! :)

Been there, done that. Six times. Not for asylum seekers specifically, but for people coming to Alaska to work who needed a place to stay rent-free for a few months while they got situated. Also loaned a car to some Bulgarians here on H-1B visas last summer, and am currently providing rides to some Jamaican H-1B visa workers when the weather's bad or they can't get to where they need to go on their bikes. Also provided a nice down jacket to one Jamaican girl this year (she was freezing in our spring weather), and have bought coats and food for others over the years. My husband has a knack for finding cars, tools, and whatnot on Craigslist for very reasonable prices, to give free of charge or re-sell at no profit.

It's not hard to be helpful and in my experience, most people only need an occasional boost so they can succeed.

The greatest difference been that the people you have helped as you claim came to Alaska to work, not welfare bludgers!
