Brazil 2014--The FIFA World Cup Thread

But really, they should send the whole team home. This was a disgrace and with Suarez out as he should have been they would have never won.

This is not the first time he did it either. Three times before he bit an opponent. WTF is wrong with this guy?

If Suarez is not banned from soccer entirely, then for the rest of his career he should be forced to wear a muzzle on the field.

A lot happened today besides Luis Suarez trying to make a snack out of an opponent. The latest news on that, by the way, is that FIFA's Disciplinary Committee is investigating Suarez's actions to determine if a suspension is warranted.

[...]

To determine if a suspension is warranted? Are they serious?

He's bitten human beings twice before during games. If he in fact did it again (and it certainly looks that way), then he should absolutely not be suspended. He should never play international soccer again, at least not without a muzzle.

If people keep trying to shoulder butt the inside of his mouth, that's their problem and not his. Stop blaming the victim!

Uruguayan Rhapsody

I watched the World Cup:
Uruguay-Italy;
I saw a striker
Behaving quite shittily

I'm not surprised
He's done this thing twice before.
He is a rich boy, he needs no sympathy
Because he's got it all, plays so well
But dives around and cheats like hell
and anytime the ref blows, it doesn't really matter to him, to him

Suarez just bit a man
Saw a shoulder near his head
Stuck his teeth in 'til it bled
His tournament had just begun
But now he's gone and thrown it all away

Suarez, ooh ooh ooh ooh
We love to see you cry
So pack your bags and piss off home tomorrow.
We'll carry on, carry on, because you don't really matter

So long. Your time has come
You're a worthless piece of slime,
gormless grinning all the time.
Goodbye, Luis Suarez, you've got to go,
gotta leave us all behind and face the truth

Suarez, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Just go home and die
I bet you wish you'd never been born at all

I see a shitty little Uruguayan Man
Suarez! Suarez! Will you foul the defender?
If you're feeling bolder, bite him on the shoulder now
Chiellini, Chiellini, Chiellini down you go,
Magnifico-o-o

He's just a rich boy
Nobody loves him
He's like a creature
From something by the Brothers Grimm
Spare us, O God, from this monstrosity

Yellow card? Sending off? Or will you let him off?
FIFA, No! Please don't let him go
FIFA, No! Please don't let him go
Never let him go, go, go
Mr Blatter, Mr Blatter, Mr Blatter we must know
Will Suarez get a ban for all eternity?

So he thinks he can kick them or bite on their arm?
So he thinks he can do that and come to no harm?
Oh Suarez, You can't do this to them Suarez.
Just get him out, Just get him right out of here.

Football Doesn't matter
Anyone can see
Football Does not matter to Luis

Any time the ref blows.

The bite by the Uruguayan player is crazy, but the freaky thing that happened today is the $3 million in cash flown to Brazil from Ghana for the players, who were complaining that they were underpaid and were threatening to abandon the World Cup unless at payment was made. The Ghana government flew the sum IN CASH to Brazil a few hours ago.

That's over $100k per player, a tidy sum for anyone from that economy.

Or about two day's income for Luis Suárez, who's 2014 salary was ten million pounds sterling, or about seventeen million US dollars.

And, amidst all the off-field drama, some more football was played today as well.

Argentina and Nigeria played a lively, entertaining game worthy of two contenders, with stellar performances from stars on both sides. Lionel Messi joined Neymar atop the scoring table with his 3rd and 4th goals. Meanwhile, Bosnia, already eliminated, saw off Iran in decisive fashion and left their fans to curse the name of Peter O'Leary (and his linesmen) for the next 4 years.

In Group E, France dominated possession against Ecuador but their finishing was lacking, while Ecuador's goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez was superb, producing a 0-0 scoreline. Ecuador are the only South American side not to advance to the round of 16. Switzerland, meanwhile, rode a hat trick from Xherdan Shaquiri to join France in the second round.

Tomorrow brings the US-Germany showdown and the end to the suspense about whether the US will advance.

That account is quite nice with the French. I'd say they didn't play very well.
Playing 11vs10, for nearly one full half-time, it's quite normal at this level that they had more possession.
That they ended with no goals scored, and even a couple of scares, isn't reassuring at all. Unless it was just a "we're already qualified" slump in motivation, they're going to have to up their level seriously to hope advance in the second turn.

The USA are through to the next round. Specific results hidden:

Germany beat the US 1-0, but Portugal beat Ghana 2-1 on a late Cristiano Ronaldo goal; Portugal ties the US in group standings but is way behind on goal differential. Ghana may have been distracted in today's match when the Ghana Football Association suspended two of the team's stars, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari, from the team just hours before the Portugal match.

Meanwhile, in other news, Luis Suarez has been suspended for nine international matches and banned from any football activity for the next four months by FIFA, and fined 100,000 Swiss francs (about $112,000 at current exchange rates).

It looked like Germany was kind to us, but not too kind. They knew our guys had only 3 days of rest and ran us ragged with those clever short passes. I have a feeling that if they wanted, they could've pounded us into the dirt like they did Portugal.

That's a joke. If you're going to punish someone, punish them. There's no place for what he did (and has done) on the pitch, and that punishment is not a deterrent.

Has anybody been following the world cup coverage of 'FiveThirtyEight'? It's a statistics based news site started recently by Nate Silver that's laid down a mathematical model to make predictions about the various world cup games. I follow them both on Facebook and Twitter .. has been some interesting articles almost daily regarding the World Cup.
