It seems instinctual. Like a crowd cheering when a rock band mentions the city's name. "OMG!! He just said Denver!!!"

Apparently European teams blaming poor performance on the South American climate is a thing.
 
Note to self: don't read this thread before you've watched that days matches.
 
Credit due to Costa Rica. They played well and deserved the win. Has to be said, though, Italy were poor. No drive, no urgency, no imagination. They'll have to up their game a lot against Uruguay, or Suarez will take them to the cleaners.

Great result for the Ticos, who not only are assured of advancing to the knockout round but have a very good chance to finish at the top of Group D. Who'd have thought that might happen before play started.

Meanwhile, France took the game by the throat against Switzerland, reminding everyone that some European sides are not going home tamely.
 
France took Switzerland to the woodshed and molested them with a gardening tool. I'm pretty sure they didn't bother to use any lubricant.

A 'thing' that neatly ignores the fact that it is the middle of winter in most of Brazil. ;)

Seriously, these guys are supposed to be professionals. I am sure the climate was known in advance; they should have been training for these conditions for months - or even years.

I guess the Netherlands are just lucky that their country is in the tropics, eh? ;)

I thought that weird lifted-leg, through-the-wall goal was France's attempt to get Switzerland to stop crying so much.
