Breakdown In Civil Order

The Seattle progressive politicians decided not to ban public use of drugs. They say it is empathy for drug users.

When the state banned police pursuits then stolen cars went up. When pursued theifs just sped up.
Is this evidence or coincidence? Many other cities have seen an increase as well. Hyundai and Kia agreed to a $200 million or so settlement over their "our cars are easy to steal" bug.
If there is no pressure against drug use then the problem grows.
Does it? People don't smoke, some don't even drink, and that is legal. The question is, does putting these people in jail stop drug abuse. The answer does not appear to be yes. If it isn't yes, we need to not stuff our prisons with drug abusers, but dangerous people and NY Jets fans.

One would think that, since California has become such a cesspool of dysfunctional society, people would leave. And markets would reduce housing costs and such.

Has that happened?
Tom

NYC DAs have a constitutional problem of immediately charging people defending themselves. It's not just Bragg - this Gonzales guy seems no better.

NY and CA (as well as some other states) did lose one congressional seat each. That means that they at least lost population relative to the rest of the country, even if not by absolute numbers. TX gained two btw.
I would think there'd be a bigger exodus of white people from California if Newsom's cockamamie reparations plan ever gets close to being passed into law.

Penny has been indicted. No word on specific charges yet.
ETA: 2nd degree manslaughter.
Not surprising. A prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict the proverbial ham sandwich.

Had Bragg been half as aggressive prosecuting Neely, he'd probably still be alive. Up the river, but alive. Maybe Bragg should prosecute himself for negligent homicide.

What makes you think the shooter was a progressive?
Steve did not say the shooter was a "progressive". Read what he wrote again. He was saying that lax prosecutions by "progressive" DAs and tacit support by other powers that be in these lefty cities enable such behavior.
Like the NOLA mayor sitting in the courtroom supporting a teenage carjacker who then got away with probation.

How would any rational person foresee that a person having a meltdown on a subway would be needlessly choked to death?

People who engage in violent crime against random strangers - like Neely had done on at least four occasions (once breaking an old woman's bones!) - puts himself in greater danger of being harmed due to his behavior. Same goes for that DeVictor guy. And why wasn't he deported in 2012? Or was he, and he simply came back due to out porous borders?

Man killed by stranger he bumped into on NYC sidewalk, police say | NBC New York

Anyone want to take a bet as to whether the killer in this incident gets as much nationwide attention and negative press as Neely? I wonder how many hundreds of protestors will take to the streets of NYC in protest of this outrageous act?
Wait... I thought the DAs were progressive and didn't hold people responsible for this shit? The Police and DA took what was initially interpreted as an accidental death, discovered there was something that actually led to the fall and subsequent head trauma followed by no immediate medical attention led to his death. The man who punched him is in custody and charged.

Neely was not well, and shouldn't have been on the streets, but certainly not in jail either. Decisions were made by the Reagan administration that have seriously hamstrung the ability to provide people the help they need. Some people can't make it because of mental illness or they need a lot of assistance. But now a mentally ill person is dead, so you can be happy about it. We won't bother you with discussions on the use of deadly force to DETAIN someone or to DEFUSE a situation.

FFS, get a grip. Reagan has been dead for 20 years and out of office for 30.
Yeah, and we are still dealing with his "legacy", including the mentally ill walking about the streets because they have no where else to go.

Then fucking fix it.
It isn't a problem you can fix, it requires never ending remediation. It means expanding Federal and State Government spending but tens (hundreds?) of billions? New facilities, the doctors, professional support staff, etc...

Yeah, you'll be so fine with that.

You are whining about the homeless issue in California... a problem Reagan was directly responsible for making worse (in California), by increasing the number of mentally ill people being put on the street. It'll cost a fortune to try and rebuild a mental wellness setup for the million(s) of mentally ill that need help for most of their life. A fortune you'd shit you pants on it Newsom announced a plan to build out such a system in California, so please stop acting like you care about anything but your own self interests.

Reagan waaaaahhhhhh, Reagan, waaaaaahhhh!! Pathetic. Newsom was blaming Schwarzenegger the other day!! He's been out of office for more than decade!! Pathetic.

As Jimmy pointed out, mentally ill people don’t necessarily belong in jail or prison.

According to the reports I have seen, Mr Neely was having a meltdown. Unpleasant to witness and maybe scary, but he was not threatening violence. If those reports are accurate, Mr Penny had no business assaulting Mr Neely, let alone using a chokehold that killed him.

But hey, another disposable human was taken out if the way. Just another example of the guy in the white ‘hat’ ridding the town of the man in the “black” hat, so you cheer it on.
