Breaking News - Ukraine War Over Tomorrow!!!

“If American democracy can survive 10 years of Greta Thunberg scolding, you guys can survive a few months of Elon Musk,” he said.

WTF!
yeah. Because Greta and Elon are basically the same person.

Who the fuck thinks this sounds smart?? I swear the words coming out these people’s mouths is like listening to flat earthers discuss physics.

The war isn't over yet. But at least the Kremlin and Washington are communicating and speaking with each other now. That alone is a big accomplishment over the last administration. Because speaking is a LOT less deadly than bullets.

That's right. President "Art of the deal-" announced he is negotiating with Putin to end the war in Ukraine. He promised that he would end that war in a day.
I'm sure that peace will be a relief to the millions of Ukrainians and President Zelensky when they see the announcement.

Maybe Trump will start lowering food prices this weekend.

What planet are you on? The bombs and bullets are still flying in Ukraine. And Trump failed to bring his boast to fruition - quelle surprise.

The key difference is that Greta is an activist who didn't have any political agency when she started. She wasn't a billionaire or even an adult. She's an adult now, and is still not a billionaire. She holds no official position with the government of a country where she's an immigrant, she can't stand in the office of the most powerful man in the world and treat him like an underling, and she doesn't control a world-wide social media platform where she's able to air out her personal grievances and block anyone who disagrees with her.

She was - and still is - an activist. That said, it is interesting to know that after a decade, the right wing oligarchs and their minions are STILL terrified of her.

I'll say it again. Orwell just had the wrong year. 1984 is now.

Or people took it as a blueprint and it took all of 40 years to realize. Sadly, it was always headed there.

Did the book accelerate it? Did it delay it? Is it inevitable that first people see the trend and warn against the finality and the this becomes the blueprint for the result?

Or is it in our power to still do something?

Did the book accelerate it? Did it delay it?
Probably not.
I suspect that all 1984 did was provide a four character bit of shorthand for “OMFG, the fascist Nanny State is going to kill us all!

Those who got it and saw it coming were not empowered by their foresight in any way that I can discern right now.

That you don't think Ukraine should have a say speaks volumes about your definition of "peace".

Nah - their leader doesn’t matter. It’s up to the leader of world’s biggest military power and the thug who saved his life, to divvy up Ukraine however they see fit.
Then, Poland, Lithuania, Moldova etc.

Yep. The fact that Trump's version of peace is, "give Putin some breathing room so he can do this all over again in 5 years time like he did with Chechnya, Georgia and Crimea", shows how fucking stupid the MAGAverse is.

Another version of Trump style peace is "We'll get rid of the Gazans who are ruining high quality vacation property."

The thing that gets me (still) is how stupid he was to pull out of the Iran deal. That wasn't looking 5 years ahead, but was looking decades ahead.

The deal (between the the UN Security Council members plus Germany) seemed pretty milquetoast on it's face, but it was (past tense) long-term diplomacy in action. Simply put, it was "look, no more sneaky trying to build nuclear weapons, and we'll give you some sanctions relief...cool?" If they were able to keep their side of the bargain, then in 10 years - right about now - they'd get another extension to the sanctions relief so long as they were behaving. If they kept their word and the deal survived until 2035?

The old Ayatollahs and anyone else who participated in the "glorious Islamic Revolution" would be dead. The vast population of Iranians under 30 in 2015 would be approaching their 50s, and would have two decades of mostly sanction-free living under their belts. A little more trade, a little more Western tourism, maybe a travel show or two, etc. etc. etc. Would it be perfect? No, but the country would (maybe) not be an international pariah, and the younger generations would be running things.

That all blew up, and 10 years on we're dealing with basically a regime that's as bad or even worse than we had in 2015. This is what you get when you hand over a country to a guy who only cares about the weekly ratings numbers.

In fact, the people looking to usher it in did so while loudly screaming "we're here to protect you from 1984".

I wish I was kidding but the Nazis have been accusing their opponents of "newspeak" exactly as they were enforcing a form of "newspeak" to prevent certain concepts from even being discussable.

They are here. They are the ones crowing about the nanny state without studies or strong evidence, but things that look like that to the ill-informed. It works because they cause fear, uncertainty, and doubt as to who the perpetrator is.

When did they stop?

The Kremlin and Washington have been communicating and speaking with each other since well before the Cuban Missile Crisis, after which event a special hotline was established to allow even more direct and immediate communication between the leaders of Russia and the USA.

As far as I am aware, that remains in place. (Though I presume Putin is screening his calls, to avoid wasting time talking to an unsupervised Trump. ;) )
