California Doing California Things

My grandmother's first husband beat the ever loving hell out of her for a year and a half until she divorced him. At the time, it was legal for him to beat the crap out of his wife.
You hypocrite! How dare you divulge that information about him, while demanding that your government cover up much worse crimes committed by other men?
I genuinely can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastically funny or not here, Poli.

Why is this so challenging for you to grasp? I'm not asking that the government cover up anything - and that's not what's happening. What I object to is the government obligating companies to resurrect evidence of them having done something legal at the time and disclose it to the world. Don't you see that those aren't the same things?

If any company wants to voluntarily dig through their history and disclose that info, by all means they should do so. It's being forced to do so while framing it as a crime that I have a problem with.

The company I work for used to have pre-existing condition exclusions for medical insurance. Pre-ex was legal at the time. We did it and so did pretty much every other company operating before 2010. It's not a mystery, it's not being covered up. It's just not being done anymore. When PPACA passed, my company didn't get embarrassed and try to bury all references to having used pre-ex in our policies. It's illegal now, and if my company were using pre-ex NOW, I'd be hollering from the rooftops about it. But it wasn't illegal then. It's not a crime that the company did something legal that has since become illegal and is no longer done.

You seem determined to miss my points, Poli. I don't know why that is. For example... you snipped my post and turned it into a completely different issue, while ignoring the entire purpose of me having brought it up. Why? Why not actually consider and address the question I asked in the spirit it was asked?
My grandmother's first husband beat the ever loving hell out of her for a year and a half until she divorced him. At the time, it was legal for him to beat the crap out of his wife. What possible good can come from punishing my eldest aunt for what her father did when she was an infant? How does that even make the teensiest bit of sense?

Do you mean black people like almost all of my family? Or do you mean african americans like my neighbors and coworkers who immigrated from Kenya, Nigeria, and Ethiopia?
If you're talking to them at all, you obviously aren't listening to a word they say.
They're not saying what you think they ought to say.
You talk about Blacks as though they were all mindless puppets waiting on the word of Gavin fucking Newsom of all people to tell them what to think. Pawns of the Democratic Party. They are not. Fully one half of Black folks aren't registered Democrats at all, they certainly aren't stooges for party politics as you allege.

Also, casually excluding them from your personal definition of "the government", every time you protest government accountability as though asking the federal government to pay its historical debts were an assault on the so-called white race exclusively.

I'd be incredibly insulted if you were my cousin, and you talked about me the way you talk about Black folk. Have you no respect at all for your own kin?
My own kin shares my view. They have a fair bit of responsibility for shaping my views. I know it's a shocker that a fair number of black people in the south are conservatives and think that a whole lot of the shit the democrats do is EXACTLY what Malcolm X warned them about.

Oh yeah, fuckin Malcolm X now. That famous hater of reparations and government accountability for slavery.

Do you ever look back on the nonsense you write and think "maybe I should dial back on the sedatives a bit"?

A few months I asked if there were to be other items to vote on on 3rd Nov apart from the mid-term.
Is it just the mid-terms you will be voting on or other things?
Oh, there always are! Lots of elected officials, 14 ballot initiatives, 3 local bond measures on mine. For a non presidential election year it was a longish ballot, even for us.

How long can it take to fill them all out?

Are they on separate ballot papers?

Fourth largest economy in the world.

Never mind that, let's hassle businesses that may have a tenuous connection to slavery.

I love that Republicans always think that's a trick question! So revealing of how fundamentally stupid and useless you have to be to believe that the Grand Old Party of Regression and Spite somehow holds the key to a better future for this country. Like, they don't just have bad plans. Democrats have bad plans a-plenty, as this thread often demonstrates. But Republicans just have nothing. Zip. Nada. A weird personality cult in Washington, a completely inaccurate "memory" of how great 1955 was, and a list of complaints they think more competent people ought to be solving for them. Despite hating every solution the competent actually propose. They really aren't so much a political party, in the traditional sense of an alliance based on common political purposes and peojects, as they are a floating mass of dead weight on the rest of society, which happens to be named after a former political party.

They want an autocracy, but what would they do with it? Trump-run departments all struggle tp keep their staff filled and the lights on from week to week in their own offices, let alone out on the streets of the actual country.

The chief executive of California’s embattled high-speed rail authority abruptly resigned on Wednesday, over a month after a state watchdog determined the agency had misused public funds. In September, California’s office of the inspector general released an investigative report finding that the rail authority had paid $543,000 in travel-related reimbursements for consultants that were not allowed, including international or out-of-state travel expenses. The report raised questions about whether business and pleasure was mixed under the purview of the chief executive, Ian Choudri. The rail authority paid $81,000 for consultants’ travel expenses to places that lacked an official purpose, including gyms, an escape room and a nightclub. In his resignation email, Choudri cited “important personal and family priorities. This has not been an easy decision, as leading the authority has been one of the most meaningful and rewarding chapters of my professional life”.
Eighteen years after the state’s voters gave the green light to a multibillion bond project, no railroad tracks have been laid, as the agency continues to search for funding. Its price tag has soared upwards of $100bn.

Teh Grauniad

EIGHTEEN years in, BILLIONS of $$$ spent and not a lick of track has been laid, none!!.

But let's hassle businesses that may have had a tenuous connection to slavery 100 years ago.

Of course, now we've got Becerra trying to outdo them by having no point of view whatsoever! At least Hilton usually pretends to have ideas for the first twenty minutes or so of every episode.

And what should we do, to get the project back on track? Sue the state again?

Or is it that you want the tracks laid first, like just hanging in the air, and then the viaducts and so forth built underneath them, afterward?

Are you even self-aware enough to notice that you're being an asshole without provocation?

I assume it varies by state, but yes, there are usually many things other than just senate and house representatives. There are usually state, county, and city level positions up for election. Sometimes there are proposed bills that go out for a public vote, depending on state lawmaking rules.

Varies by state, but I think most states have them on one ballot. I spent about two hours filling out mine... but there were several things that I had already researched ahead of time. The actual "fill in the bubbles" was probably about 30 minutes, the rest of the time was researching some of the positions and propositions that hadn't been well-publicized in advance.

I just really love how you frame democrats as multifaceted and nuanced, with a wide variety of views... but republicans are a single hive-mind that's unalloyed evil.

Your statement about republicans wanting an autocracy is just as accurate as a statement saying democrats want communism.
