Climate Change(d)?

What TSwizzle may not understand is that naturally occurring greenhouse gases are what makes the suffice of the Earth habitable. Like his comfortable temperature in Santa Monica.

James Lovelock's theory of Gaia is fascinating. Some love the theory; others find it absurd, treating the Earth's biosphere almost like a single living organism that can regulate its own temperature and other parameters. But whether you love his theory or view it with scorn, his model does seem to fit the facts!
I think this is an observer effect--if things didn't behave that way the Earth wouldn't have remained habitable for long enough for us to develop. Doesn't mean life everywhere is as lucky.

When the Sun was cooler, Gaia maintained surface warmth for the dinosaurs. But as the Sun's temperature rose, Gaia eventually created glaciers and ice-caps to reflect sunlight and cool the Earth.
Horseshit. Gaia has done exactly what all the other gods have ever done - i.e. nothing at all.

The misattribution of agency to inanimate systems is a very old human error, and formed the nucleus of all religion.

We should try not to wallow in our ignorant mistakes.
I do agree there is no agency. But I think it's one of these cases that sure looks like it because anything else would mean we wouldn't be observing it.

There was no "agency" involved in the evolution of life, or in the behavior of "lower" creatures.

That's all Lovelock claimed, that Gaia has strong similarities to a living creature. Pretending someone treats it as a "God" is just more of Mr. Bilby's silly malarkey.

It really is time to stop wasting tax payer money on this net zero cult.

‘No sign’ of promised fossil fuel transition as emissions hit new high. Despite nations’ pledges at Cop28 a year ago, the burning of coal, oil and gas continued to rise in 2024. There is “no sign” of the transition away from burning fossil fuels that was pledged by the world’s nations a year ago, with 2024 on track to set another new record for global carbon emissions. The new data, released at the UN’s Cop29 climate conference in Azerbaijan, indicates that the planet-heating emissions from coal, oil and gas will rise by 0.8% in 2024. In stark contrast, emissions have to fall by 43% by 2030 for the world to have any chance of keeping to the 1.5C temperature target and limiting “increasingly dramatic” climate impacts on people around the globe. Fossil fuel emissions are projected to be almost 8% higher in 2024 than in 2015, the year the Paris climate agreement was signed. Romain Ioualalen, at Oil Change International, said: “At Cop28, all countries pledged to transition away from fossil fuels but, on the ground, we have witnessed the opposite: new oil and gas projects are being approved around the world, in complete defiance of climate science.” “At Cop29, we need to see countries come to the table with [commitments] that end fossil fuel expansion and accelerate renewable energy,” he said. The host of Cop29, Azerbaijan, is planning a major expansion in gas production in the next decade.

The Guardian

It ain't happening.

It seems Argentina has withdrawn their representatives from this charade.

Argentinian negotiators representing the government of the climate science denier Javier Milei have been ordered to withdraw from the Cop29 summit after only three days, adding to concerns about the stability of the Paris agreement. More than 80 representatives from the South American country are in Baku, Azerbaijan, for two weeks of negotiations about climate finance for the energy transition. Argentina’s far-right leader, Milei, has previously called the climate crisis a “socialist lie”, and threatened to withdraw from the Paris agreement during his election campaign last year, but he has since backed down. On Wednesday, representatives from Milei’s government were ordered to leave the Azerbaijani capital. Speaking to the Guardian, Argentina’s undersecretary for the environment, Ana Lamas – the country’s most senior representative on the climate and nature after Milei dissolved the environment ministry – confirmed the decision first reported by Climatica.

Gaia is a God(dess).

To give something inanimate the name of a Goddess, and to discuss its behaviour as though it were (or "had strong similarities to") a living creature, IS treating it as a God.

WTF else would be required for Godhood?

Again, do you understand that the comfortable temperature you oft cite in Santa Monica is due to the atmosphere acting like a greenhouse?

Do you even understand the text you post or are you just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hope some of it sticks?

It's worse than that, Jim.

Most of the lobbyists who are NOT Climate Change skeptics are, nonetheless, and illogically, nuclear fission skeptics.

So we have a debate dominated by two camps:

Idiots who don't accept that the problem exists; and

Idiots who accept that the problem exists, but who outright reject the one solution that could quickly and easily solve the problem.

The world is fucked.

+ Idiots who don't accept the existence of the problem because they don't like the solutions offered by the people who do.

You couldn't make this up

The president of COP29’s host country has told the UN climate conference that oil and gas are a "gift of God". Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev criticised "Western fake news" about the country's emissions and said nations "should not be blamed" for having fossil fuel reserves. The country plans to expand gas production by up to a third over the next decade.
Shortly afterwards, UN chief António Guterres told the conference that doubling down on the use of fossil fuels was "absurd". He said the "clean energy revolution" had arrived and that no government could stop it." :hysterical:
"The sound you hear is the ticking clock," he said. "We are in the final countdown to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and time is not on our side." COP29 is scheduled to last until 22 November, but there are already fears that the tricky issues on the table could make a final agreement very difficult.

Last chance to save the planet, sound familiar?

Yup.

I suppose the role of USA politicians and lobbyists is as you describe. What about the other Anglophonic countries?

Do countries like France and Denmark have a similar political pathology? In the sequel I assume such countries tend to have more rational policies than the USA.

Perhaps Trump's ascendancy will have a silver lining. The loss of American prestige (which may tend to bring down the other Anglophones as well) will enhance the prestige of countries with more rational ideas.

The Planet will be fine, she has been though worse. It's some of the vermin that inhabit her that may not be so fine.

What would another 536ad event and the following mini ice age do to our economy? What happens when food security is compromised by changing weather patterns and more frequent weather events, floods, draughts, cyclones?

It is odd you use people's quotes fully, but then try to manipulate them as if we are complete morons who can't read what you didn't bold.

Oil funded climate scientists noted 3 or 4 degrees would be the catastrophic warming, not the 1.5 degrees. 1.5 degrees is trying to keep it from running up to 3 or 4 degrees. And currently, you are winning. Climate change isn't being taken seriously by just about everyone. Short term economic gains are all that matter.

TSwizzle refuses to acknowledge the fact that the atmosphere acts like a greenhouse that creates the comfortable temperatures TSwizzle quotes about Santa Monica.

He is probably ignorant of the fact that our lives depend on the sea which is warming. Coral reefs which are at the bottom of the ocean food chain and ecosystem are dying. Ocean organisms provide oxygen to the atmosphere

The planet will survive and life will survive but us modern consumptive humans may not as we live today and at current populations.

Will not.
There’s no maybe about it. Modern humans have wrought sudden change to our biosphere, and the biosphere will inevitably wreak sudden change in HSS and its “lifestyle”.
