"Coronavirus and the US" or "We are all going to die!!!!"

Santa Clara county announces a new coronavirus case case from someone who has not been outside the US.

Welp. It's been nice knowing ya'll.

Probably because of this:

They sent people in without adequate biosafety gear.

Of course we aren't going to get the details:

All the government departments that should be providing information are gagged, Pence's approval is needed to say anything.

Is this a GOP suicide plot? If everyone gets it we will see millions of deaths amongst the 65+ crowd.
Maybe it's their social security plan.

There are some things we can do to make it less likely we will become infected. We can be sure and have our flu and pneumonia vaccines if we are older adults. Having a recent respiratory infection lowers our immunity, so get vaccinated. Drink lots of water and wash your hands doing the 20 second scrub that all health care workers are taught to do. Try to avoid touching your face and avoid crowds as much as possible. Get plenty of sleep and avoid as much stress as possible.

I alos do aerobics and I've not had as much as a cold in years. Now, I know why that might be.

Aerobic exercise aides our immune system and helps prevent viral illnesses. So, I will borrow a line from an old Parliament song: Shit! Goddamn! Get off your ass and jam! :D

Seriously, if you don't already have an exercise program that involves aerobics, start one now! It's not a guarantee that you won't get sick, but it does usually benefit our health.

Study of 72,000 COVID-19 patients finds 2.3% death rate | CIDRAP

Characteristics of and Important Lessons From the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Outbreak in China: Summary of a Report of 72 314 Cases From the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention | Global Health | JAMA | JAMA Network

From JAMA,
Spectrum of disease (N = 44 415)
  • Mild: 81% (36 160 cases)
  • Severe: 14% (6168 cases)
  • Critical: 5% (2087 cases)
Case-fatality rate
  • 2.3% (1023 of 44 672 confirmed cases)
  • 14.8% in patients aged ≥80 years (208 of 1408)
  • 8.0% in patients aged 70-79 years (312 of 3918)
  • 49.0% in critical cases (1023 of 2087)

With the R0 reported at 4.5 - 7, along with patients being infectious before, during, and after symptoms... it is impossible to contain.
Quarantine California? Impossible. It is likely that a number of pre-symptom carriers have already left.

Researchers who have examined the genomes of two coronavirus infections in Washington State say the similarities between the cases suggest that the virus may have been spreading in the state for weeks.

Washington had the United States’ first confirmed case of coronavirus, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Jan. 20. Based on an analysis of the virus’s genetic sequence, another case that surfaced in the state and was announced on Friday probably was descended from that first case.

The two people live in the same county, but are not known to have had contact with one another, and the second case occurred well after the first would no longer be expected to be contagious. So the genetic findings suggest that the virus has been spreading through other people in the community for close to six weeks, according to one of the scientists who compared the sequences, Trevor Bedford, an associate professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington.

Dr. Bedford said it was possible that the two cases could be unrelated, and had been introduced separately into the United States. But he said that was unlikely, however, because in both cases the virus contained a genetic variation that appears to be rare — it was found in only two of the 59 samples whose sequences have been shared from China, where the virus originated.

I assume that most of you already knew that, since a lot of us are news junkies and this was reported last night. It certainly does make the potential for a pandemic more likely. There is so much left to learn about this new virus. And since, many people have very mild symptoms, it might be spreading faster than we realize. I don't fear for myself even though I am 70, but my very healthy 67 year old spouse does have mild asthma, which puts him at much higher risk than me.

double edged sword. Fixes soc sec spending, but loses millions of voters....

Not to wax terribly political here, but I gotta say - that would restore my faith.
Somehow though, falling on their double-edged sword would seem just a tad out of character for that particular Party. Altruism isn't their most prominent feature.
:)
Nonetheless, it does look as if COVID-19 mortality is skewed toward the elderly.

I wonder if we Americans (or westerners in general) will change from shaking hands to bowing for a while.

Tap shoes. Hands to the side or in pockets, reach out with the leg, touch toes. Or if wearing open-toed, tap covered toes to sole.
And thus a resurgence of a particular phrase...
"Saw your wife at the supermarket. Knocked boots with her in the parking lot."

Being 77 and my sister 80 we still have an 85% chance of surviving the disease. On the bright side it pretty clear my 4 yr and 7 yr great grandchildren are unlikely to be adversely affected.

Not wanting to get too political but I see that church is Korea that caused the problem there is being sued for murder. That's cool.

I've shunned shaking hands for years. If you think about it, it's pretty gross. This tradition needs to be retired.

Even the French have been advised to stop the "cheek kiss" so maybe so. The fist bump may even vanish if the paranoia keeps growing.

It doesn't really matter 'cause WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!

I was just thinking that. I have to take my mom to a funeral weekend after next. There will be tons of old people. I'll be bowing.

Fist bumps appear to be gaining in popularity. I doubt that Westerners will move to bowing next. I'm expecting polite smiles and waving hands from a distance.

Dead 3,119
Infected 90,932, but this number is becoming meaningless at this point because it's clear that number of infected is much much higher.

This virus really likes old and sick people
