Desantis Declares Himself Emperor Of Florida?

How are a slave's skills in any sense a matter of their personal benefit? The whole point of keeping a slave is that all of their skills and labor are to their masters' benefit, and any training they receive is an investment owed back to those masters in relevant service.
It is a benefit to the slave in the sense if the slave wants to stay alive they should produce more than it costs the slave owner to keep them alive.
It is fundamental to the master-slave dynamic that the master doesn't care what the slave wants.

King Cotton made the South. Alot went to the UK, but a lot went to the North's textile industry. Just saying.

Curious to know if the Florida curriculum notes, in addition to the "value added" aspect of slavery, that Southern states made it a crime to teach a slave to read and write. Slave owners had a particular horror of slaves being able to write and receive messages and hence to plot against the master.

Amazing that they didn’t go on strike to demand better job skills for future employment opportunities

The Florida governor and GOP hopeful signaled he wanted an end to his war with the company, saying he’d be willing to talk to CEO Bob Iger.
The war he started.

Don't mess with the mouse.

“No one has made Disney more money recently than me,” the Florida governor said on Monday. “Because during Covid, they were open in Florida.”

It seems my governor underestimates the vastness of Disney's empire. While the parks constitute a decent portion, the bulk of their revenue comes from media and entertainment.

It's quite a socialist perspective for him to assert that the government contributes more to the private sector's earnings than the private sector itself does. But Republicans often uphold values as long as they're advantageous, so the introduction of new rules isn't surprising.

I don't think he was saying that he helped Disney in a socialist, "the government is the servant of the people" sort of way. He was saying that he helped Disney in the "You're lucky I didn't lock you in the closet like your other boyfriend" sort of way.

Maybe I should thank the guy threatening to kill me for merely choosing to extort my money. What a mugger helper!

I thought he and his followers didn’t like Disney so why would he brag he has helped them make money?

“They’ve become terribly woke and woke dies in Florida but I helped them make more money than ever before!”

Makes no sense.

If he is rally against Disney all he has to do is wait as they continue to spew garbage TV and movies.

Candygram for DeSantis. Candygram for DeSantis.

......
A California lawmaker has introduced a resolution calling for a criminal investigation into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for his role in sending dozens of Latin American migrants to Sacramento earlier this summer. ACR 113, introduced by Silicon Valley Democratic Assemblyman Evan Low, was not available on the state’s legislative database website by deadline. But according to Low’s office it calls on the federal government to investigate DeSantis’ “Unauthorized Alien Transport Program,” which flew 36 migrants from Texas to California last June. It seemed he meant that his lack of Covid-19 restrictions which helped spread the disease and kill more people, helped Disney make more money because they were allowed to be open.

Opinion | At a College Targeted by DeSantis, Gender Studies Is Out, Jocks Are In - The New York Times
In two weeks, the new school year will begin at Florida’s New College, the progressive public liberal arts school singled out by Gov. Ron DeSantis for cultural transformation. Returning students will find an institution that is increasingly unrecognizable.

Over a third of the faculty members have left. Many of last year’s students are continuing their education elsewhere. Hampshire College, a small private liberal arts school in New England, has offered financial aid to New College students so they can transfer without tuition increases. Thirty-five plan to attend Hampshire this fall, and 30 more have inquired about doing so in the spring, a large number, given that last year New College had fewer than 700 students. Last week, New College’s leadership announced that it was moving to abolish the gender studies department. Chris Rufo, the culture warrior whom DeSantis put on New College’s board of trustees, boasted that it would be “the first public university in America to begin rolling back the encroachment of gender ideology and queer theory on its academic offerings.”

The dismantling of gender studies is striking because of how closely it follows a playbook for the ideological transformation of higher education pioneered by Hungary, which banned gender studies in 2018.
Some other states have right-wingers who might want to also do that.
But having followed the right-wing remaking of New College all year, I think it’s worth paying attention not just to what is being destroyed but also to what is being put in its place.

Rufo speaks a lot about academic excellence and the virtues of a classical liberal education. But as Steven Walker of The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported in a damning July story, the incoming class recruited by the new administration has lower average grades, SAT scores and ACT scores than last year’s class. “Much of the drop in average scores can be attributed to incoming student-athletes who, despite scoring worse on average, have earned a disproportionate number of the school’s $10,000-per-year merit-based scholarships,” wrote Walker.
New College of Florida pursues student athletes at academic cost - "Several admissions department officials expressed discomfort with the college's aggressive recruiting tactics."
As of July, New College had 328 incoming students, a record for the school. Of the group, 115 are athletes, and 70 were recruited to play baseball, even though, as Walker reported, New College has no real sports facilities and has yet to be accepted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. By comparison, the University of Florida’s far more established baseball team has 37 student-athletes.
So it's to become a sports school?

For all right-wingers' claimed support of academic excellence, they are eager to violate that claimed support when it comes to sports.

Referring to some new majors that New College will have,
“Tell me how sports psychology, finance and communications fits with a classical liberal arts model.”

Rather than reviving some traditional model of academic excellence, then, it looks as though New College leaders are simply trying to replace a culture they find politically hostile with one meant to be more congenial. The end of gender studies and the special treatment given to incoming athletes are part of the same project, masculinizing a place that had been heavily feminist, artsy and queer. When I spoke to Rufo last weekend, he offered several explanations for New College’s new emphasis on sports, including the classical idea that a healthy body sustains a healthy mind. But an important part of the investment in athletics, he said, is that it is a way to make New College more male and, by extension, less left wing.

In the past, about two-thirds of New College’s students were women. “This is a wildly out-of-balance student population, and it caused all sorts of cultural problems,” said Rufo. Having so many more women than men, he said, turned New College into “what many have called a social justice ghetto.” The new leadership, he said, is “rebalancing the ratio of students” in the hopes of ultimately achieving gender parity.
Seems like this is much more a problem with Christopher Rufo than with higher education.

A form of affirmative action that right-wingers will *love*.

Author Michelle Goldberg concludes "New College isn’t jettisoning gender ideology. It’s just adopting a different one."

I've definitely seen a shift toward women-majority classes, but what is the basis for complaint about that? They do the work, they complete their programs. They have good attitudes. And they aren't taking up seats that a man is otherwise trying to take, it seems like young men are just bowing out of education. They'll bear the costs of that decision, while their mothers and sisters and girlfriends put a roof over their heads.

Ron DeSantis's approach in Florida echoes the Treaty of Tordesillas, where powers once felt entitled to partition the world in 1494. Speaking of entitlements!! Just as the treaty permitted European dominance over Indigenous populations, DeSantis seems intent on exerting undue influence over Florida's Black community.

Though history may offer the explanation that it was once normal to partition land that wasn't yours, it's disconcerting to see that it is still normal to partition off black History.

Rationalizations like dismissing the 'woke' movement conceal the deep-seated marginalization that I observe public officials executing, seemingly with Christian or Catholic fervor. New face, same problems.

Clearly you don't care about the "cultural issues" that arise when you concentrate too many intelligent women together. It causes what some people refer to as "social justice ghettos”. Those aren't my words, those are the words of "some people"... how can you argue against "some people"? You might not care about social justice ghettos, but some of us do.

Parody should require a little bit more than slightly rewording what others are saying. Jebus! What are these people, the Taliban?!
