Because of the nature of Islam there are are large methodological problems with conducting studies like that. Christianity and Islam are similar in many ways, but in some ways very different. If the argument is that the problem is being Muslim and that it's Islam that causes Al Qaeda and ISIS then you've got to explain how the Islamic world was the most liberal on the planet for about 500 years. It's really important to look at how Islam is organised. It isn't. They don't have a pope. They don't have fundamentalism. Well, they do, but that goes against the Quran itself. Islam was intended to be shaped by their regional congregations. Which you can't study to be an imam. An imam is just anybody from the congregation elected by it to be it's imam. Mosques aren't holy sites. A mosque is just anywhere muslims gather to pray together. The Sharia was introduced by the Ottomans who realised that encouraging regionalism didn't help them run an empire. Shia Islam violate all of this of course. But they're a minority of Muslims.

Christianity is the way it is partly because it was conducive to running an empire. The Ottomans wanted Islam to be more like Christianity. So they introduced the Sharia.

Modern Islam is very much a product of colonialism. It developed the way it did in response to, mostly British, oppression. That's why it's so aggressive and militant. It had to be to push out the imperialists. And that wasn't all that long ago. And militant Islam just kept going. But it's still a pretty new and modern development. If Islam can turn into this. Actually, in the 40'ies in USA the Italian and Jewish maffias were about as big. They did similar things.
