So free speech doesn't apply to "fake news" as he defines it.

This was a more recent video from four days ago. But I was looking for other similar such statements made before Kirk was assassinated. Quotes or videos. Post them here. I want to build a database basically of them.

It's heartening that FCC chair Brendan Carr's statements about Kimmel were so extreme and Orwellian that there was -- at last -- some pushback from Trump's party, notably Ted Cruz. But there's not nearly enough discussion of the toxic notions Trump is trying out on his base. Here he is saying that if a President has enough popularity with voters, that "negative reporting" is "illegal". Illegal! What a sinister idea to come from a President. He's also said that Kimmel's anti-Trump monologues constitute an illegal campaign contribution to Democrats, which is beyond absurd and should be abhorrent to any American with an understanding of our Constitution. It is no hyperbole at all to state that this administration is taking a wrecking ball to democracy. Trump is letting us know in explicit language that he is not done suing media when he doesn't like the coverage and attempting to condition the free press to his own political agenda. He's going places that Nixon never dreamed of going, with the backing of a party and a SCOTUS which have given him the means and the immunity to do it. I never thought I could loathe a public figure to this extent, but this addled old dotard seems determined to refashion the government to his greedy and tyrannical ends. Our former allies and especially our neighbors to the north watch us succumbing to all this and wonder at how far we've fallen.

The Trump administration is using boa constrictor tactics. They need not concern themselves with resistance; They just tighten their grip until resistance starts, and then stop and wait for their victim to relax.

A boa constrictor doesn't use physical strength to kill its prey; It just remorselessy takes up the slack, every time its prey pauses for breath.

If there's pushback, back down just a tiny bit. Then come back next month and squeeze just a little harder. Eventually all resistance is crushed, and the victim is left wondering how they got there.

If a boa constrictor has an animal in its coils and you cut off its head, does the body relax, or tighten its coils?

Precisely. I've heard such bizarre contortionist talk by conservative friends justifying these statements and actions. Ohhh, it's just trump. He doesn't mean it. You're just suffering from TDS. Others claim that Biden was worse for pressuring google to stop COVID misinformation and Twitter internal documents regarding hunter biden's laptop - BEFORE Biden was elected.

We are heading down the same path of many other Democratic Republics I fear - is it inevitable that they end in chaos and authoritarianism? Athens, Rome, Venice, Italy in the 20's, Weimar Germany, more recently, Russia, others as well.

I don't think they have to. We can chose to make democracy great again. But I fear it is too late. Indeed it was too late after the election of Ronald Reagan. I still blame him and his policies for where we've headed in the last 40 years. The only thing that can save us is a serious economic downturn so that the country totally repudiates the Republican Party and its bullshit philosophy in its entirety.

Delanda est GOP.

What's the point? Trump contradicts himself every 10 minutes.
I agree. But I also agreed with Ted Cruz so it's a strange fucking week for me. I wish I still drank so that could explain it.

barbos is still right, however.
I have agreed twice with Barbos (on different topics) this last 2 weeks.
Perhaps the alt-reality is finally getting to me.

Look, if conservatives were funny and TV executives thought they could make money with conservative comedians hosting late night shows I’m sure those shows would exist.

Late Night Ratings Revealed: Who’s Top & Who’s Lagging Behind?
The biggest ratings winner, however, was Fox News’ Gutfeld! in the 10 pm slot. The show, which takes a satirical look at the weekly news with a panel of comedians and political commentators, averaged 3.289 million viewers for the second quarter and 238,000 in the demo.

Well, there you go! Not in direct competition since it is on an hour earlier, but good for them. Free speech!!

Edited to add: this is a cable show though, right?

So out of curiosity I pulled up YouTube and I made it three minutes into this gutfeld episode:

I didn’t find it particularly funny, which I guess was to be expected, but neither did his audience it seemed. The laughter was anemic at best and a few jokes landed with no laughter at all. Just watch if and tell me if you think he was getting big laughs. He wasn’t.

Not sure why the ratings would be so high. I guess being earlier helps get those people who go to bed before the network late night shows come on.
