I am sure the salary they pay Colbert himself is quite hefty. Also, in his farewell speech, Colbert mentioned that the show has a staff of 200. That is quite a lot for a late night show, and explains why they are losing money. This show has a format that was developed when the networks commanded almost all of the eyeballs. It still worked when cable diluted those eyeballs. But in this streaming era, there was even more dilution, and with that come much lower revenues. How expensive can the late night show possibly be?
Colbert will be back in some way I am sure. Probably with a show that is much cheaper to produce, with a smaller staff and maybe no live band either.
