UK government lawyers say Israel is breaking international law, claims top Tory in leaked recording | Israel-Gaza war | The Guardian - Sun 31 Mar 2024 07.05 EDT - "Chair of foreign affairs select committee Alicia Kearns said at a Tory fundraiser that legal advice would mean the UK has to cease all arms sales to Israel without delay"
The British government has received advice from its own lawyers stating that Israel has breached international humanitarian law in Gaza but has failed to make it public, according to a leaked recording obtained by the Observer.

Palestinian and other non-Jewish citizens of Israel (2.5 million people) -- full voting rights, but very limited property-ownership rights, no right to reunify with family members in the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, often suffering disproportionate response when they protest, their facilities receiving much less funding from the Israeli government than Jewish citizens' ones.
Israel stopped "family reunification" because all the marriages (what that's actually talking about) were bogus.

Unrecognized Palestinian Citizens of Israel (85,000 people) -- mainly Bedouin Arabs. Their towns are not officially recognized, with no access to Israeli electricity, water, and trash pickup.
You realize their "towns" are temporary encampments on land they don't own?

Palestinians living in Israeli occupied East Jerusalem (360,000 people) -- no Israeli citizenship despite the territory being annexed by Israel, Israel rejects most Palestinians' building-permit applications, Jews allowed to take over pre-1948 Jewish-owned property, but Palestinians not allowed to take over pre-1948 Palestinian-owned property elsewhere. Palestinian facilities underfunded relative to Jewish citizens' ones.
You realize "East Jerusalem" doesn't exist? It's simply the part of Jerusalem that was on the Arab side of the armistice line. And they are eligible for citizenship--just very few accept. And what's wrong with Jews taking over their own property? Just because they were ethnically cleansed from the area doesn't destroy the ownership. Very different issue than Israel keeping out those who refuse to make peace.

Seems like קביעות ריקות .

So one should shut down immigration because some immigrants used fraudulent claims?

I'm surprised that nobody here seems to read Hebrew, or else is willing to use an autotranslator on what I posted.

I myself used an autotranslator to compose that text, and I checked it with a back-translation.

It is: empty assertions

Around half of Congressional Democrats boycotted Prime Minister Netanyahu's speech.
Andrew Solender on X: "By my count, roughly 100 of the 212 House Democrats and 27 of 51 Senate Democrats (and Dem-caucusing independents) are in the chamber for Netanyahu's speech. That's around half of each caucus absent." / X
In his following xweets, he gave lists, and I count up 104 Reps and 28 Senators present. That's 108 Reps and 23 Senators absent.

Some of them: The 38 lawmakers boycotting Netanyahu’s address to Congress today | The Independent

Group of Democratic lawmakers skip Netanyahu's address in Congress
Based on an exhaustive analysis of public statements, media reports and video footage, Anadolu determined that a historic number of House representatives and senators skipped Netanyahu's speech. The total of at least 96 lawmakers is nearly double the number of Democrats who boycotted his 2015 address -- 58.

The sweeping volume of holdouts stands in stark contrast to the dozens of standing ovations Netanyahu received from many of the lawmakers present Wednesday.

Nancy Pelosi on X: "Benjamin Netanyahu’s presentation ..." / X
Benjamin Netanyahu’s presentation in the House Chamber today was by far the worst presentation of any foreign dignitary invited and honored with the privilege of addressing the Congress of the United States.

Many of us who love Israel spent time today listening to Israeli citizens whose families have suffered in the wake of the October 7th Hamas terror attack and kidnappings.

These families are asking for a ceasefire deal that will bring the hostages home – and we hope the Prime Minister would spend his time achieving that goal.

Around half of Congress' Democrats skip Netanyahu speech
Mentioning boycotters former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), former House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

The only Republican to boycott the event was Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) who said that he did not want to be a "prop" for BN.

Some 132 Congresmembers boycotted BN's speech, twice as many as those who did so back in 2015: The list of Democrats skipping Netanyahu’s speech | CNN Politics - 58 of them, 50 in the House and 8 in the Senate.

A handful of Netanyahu critics did show up, including progressive Jewish Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), who was holding, and at times reading, a book titled "The Netanyahu Years."

She also wore a Palestinian flag pin and a keffiyeh, the black and white scarf that has been linked with the Palestinian struggle for over half a century.

The other side of her sign displayed during the controversial address in Washington read: “Guilty of genocide.”

Tlaib was accompanied by an invited guest, Hani Almadhoun, a Palestinian who has lost more than 150 members of his extended family since Israel launched its war with the aim, as Netanyahu has often repeated, of “destroying Hamas”, after the group led a surprise attack on southern Israel from Gaza last October.
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib on X: "Joining me in the chamber today is Hani Almadhoun, who has lost over 150 members of his extended family in Netanyahu’s genocide. Netanyahu’s Congress address is already a debacle. - "If Israel’s prime minister came to exert leverage, it’s no longer clear where, how, or with whom he needs to do the exerting."
Having more free time on his hands than he’d anticipated, Netanyahu may meet in the meantime with former (and possibly future) President Donald Trump—which would bolster many Democrats’ suspicions that the whole trip has been a partisan ploy all along.

In short: The whole framework of this trip has slipped wildly out of joint since it was planned two months ago. Someone, in Washington or Jerusalem, should have canceled it.

... Biden’s top officials claim that they and other powers in the region are nearing a peace deal with Hamas, but even if it’s true (unlike the previous umpteen times they’ve said so), Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners back in Jerusalem are warning him not to take any dramatic steps in that direction.

...
Memories are also far from dim. The last time Netanyahu arranged to be invited to address a joint session of Congress was in 2015, when he used the occasion to blast President Barack Obama (and, by association, Vice President Biden) for negotiating the Iran nuclear deal, calling it “a very bad deal” (both impolitic and incorrect, especially since he did so without consulting the White House ahead of time).

He has been a terrible ally to Obama and Biden, criticizing them for alleged acts of betrayal, when in fact they have bountifully supplied Israel with military aid, intelligence assistance, and diplomatic support—more so, especially now, than nearly any other country on the planet.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on X: "Just so we’re clear, ..." / X
Just so we’re clear, Netanyahu has lost so many people that he is addressing just a fraction of Congress.

When this happens, they fill the seats with non-members, like what they do at award ceremonies, in order to project the appearance of full attendance and support.

Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu brings loads of dirty laundry to be cleaned in Washington - The Washington Post - September 23, 2020 at 3:28 p.m. EDT
Most politicians go to great lengths to conceal their dirty laundry.

And then there's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Over the years, the Israeli leader has developed a reputation a among the staff at the U.S. president's guesthouse for bringing special cargo on his trips to Washington: bags and suitcases full of dirty laundry, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

The clothes are cleaned for the prime minister free of charge by the U.S. staff, a perk that is available to all foreign leaders but sparingly taken advantage of given the short stays of busy heads of state.

"The Netanyahus are the only ones who bring actual suitcases of dirty laundry for us to clean,' said one U.S. official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the details of a foreign leader's visits. "After multiple trips, it became clear this was intentional."

The recent John Oliver "Last Week Tonight" ( ) goes into much detail about the West Bank. I HIGHLY recommend watching it. Indeed I will view with disdain anyone who continues to post incorrect views on the topic who has NOT watched Oliver's comments.

AFAICT John Oliver is a national treasure, worth more than most of the major-network top reporters and anchors added together.

Can we split the criticism of Netanyahu's administration from the whole of Israel?
I’m sure Ted Cruz and his ilk can split their criticism of the Biden administration from the whole of the USA, right?
Are we seriously going to let Ted Cruz be the bar of what is considered acceptable and humane?
No. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of Cruz and the Republicans for conflating criticism of Netanyahu with criticism of the whole of Israel, as you are right to point out are two separate things.

They happily say the worst things about Biden and Harris without implying those things should also be criticisms of the whole of the USA.

Of course, hypocrisy is the foundation of the Republican viewpoint these days.
