Homeopathic drug company caught putting actual drugs in its remedies

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knocked the stuffing out of homeopathic drug company Terra-Medica last week, when the regulatory agency announced that a number of its "natural" remedies contained actual drugs.

According toWired UK, the FDA found that 56 lots of the company's drugs contained the antibiotic penicillin and its derivatives. But Terra-Medica's product information clearly states that their remedies are antibiotic-free. This is problematic because a number of people are allergic to penicillin, and the concentrations found in the products are high enough to spark a reaction.
It's as if someone said, "You know, I don't think we are causing enough harm with this quackery. Let's put penicillin into our remedies and not tell the folks who might be allergic to it."

It's as if someone said, "You know, I don't think we are causing enough harm with this quackery. Let's put penicillin into our remedies and not tell the folks who might be allergic to it."

Or you can even more fun and postulate it was an agent for that evil entity "Major Pharma" who contaminated the good homeopathic medicines to discredit them, so they could keep making their obscene profits and doing little or nothing to help people. ;)

I'm severely allergic to anything in the cillin family, almost died a couple of times when I was small. These folks responsible for this are sick.

I hate to sound callous, but anyone who believes in homeopathic medicine probably needs to remove themselves from the gene pool anyway. For the greater good, you understand.

If they stop putting penicillin in their products, the problem is that there may still be some trace molecules of penicillin in the vats they use to make them and that further dilution of the penicillin will make it stronger and even worse for those who are allergic to it.

I find this rather hilarious.

"Gentlemen, we must prepare our homeopathic cures for the future! Skepticism is on the rise, and eventually people will figure out that we're just selling them sugar water. Any suggestions?"

"We could try putting in actual medicine. That way, people will notice an actual objective improvement in their health and won't grow to disbelieve our claims that water has memory and that diluting some of the stuff that gives you headaches a billion times will cure you of headaches."

"I like it!"

"Yes, he's made a good proposition, sir, but if I may? What about our current loyal customers, who are staunch believers in our pseudoscientific claims? If we tell them we're putting in actual medicine, they'll stop buying our products on principle!"

"Simple... we don't tell them!"

"Brilliant sir!"

I'm delivering an ultimatum to those MPs right now. Either they immediately and completely retract their defamatory statements or I'm going to start stabbing pins into voodoo dolls I've made of them.

There are consequences for these types of things and it's about time they learned them.

Homeopathy Awareness Week

Homeopathy Awareness Week takes place internationally from April 10th-16th and is aimed at raising awareness of homeopathic remedies. Each year, homeopaths from around the world use this week to promote their practice and gain publicity – yet public awareness of the realities of homeopathy remains low.

For example, many people mistakenly believe homeopathic products are a form of herbal product – not realising that homeopathic products typically contain no active ingredients at all. Over two centuries ago, the first homeopaths perversely decided that diluting an active medicinal ingredient makes it more potent, with the vast majority of remedies containing nothing at all! Modern homeopathic tablets are generally 100% sugar, containing no active ingredient whatsoever.

Yes, but it's OK; they can be cured! It just requires some mind-bogglingly stupid, diluted until none remains...

Well, I hadn't thought of it like that! I'll take something with one molecule of _____ diluted in a vat of water the size of Lake Superior please! Bring it on penicillin!

Understood. :D

I have a friend...well we haven't seen each other or talked in some time, but I used to work with him and I've known him for years. He's educated, fairly intelligent and...he also spends a large portion of his check at a homeopathic clinic. I've tried talking sense in to him, but he believes all their woo woo and they had been giving him over half a dozen "prescriptions". Not a single one of which has any active ingredients worth noting. That and they convinced him to completely change his diet, which of course includes buying a whole bunch of garbage products they happen to sell.

What I can't understand is how someone who seems so intelligent in other ways, could be so fucking stupid about a sham that seems obvious.
