I don't know WTF was the attraction with Springsteen. Dreadful contrived blue collar Americana bullshit music.
In my experience, non-musical people, by which I mean people who don't really understand music at all, tend to favor artists who create music that lacks complexity and sounds unchallenging. And music critics have always seemed to elevate and popularize artists who create simple forms of music. For example: Lou Reed, who can barely play, can't sing, and writes primitive music, is a perennial darling of the critics, while bands who made complex music that required knowledge and skill to perform, like prog and fusion artists from the 70s up until now, are typically made fun of and labeled as pretentious and self-indulgent. Critics will always applaud the folk or indy act that uses three chords and berate the act that requires virtuosity.

I had a friend who was literally tone deaf. He hated any kind of music that sounded too complex. I mean actually hated it.

ETA: I don't much like Springsteen, but his anthem, Born in the USA, was largely misunderstood. The lighter-flicking rabble seemed to think it was a patriotic song.

Precisely what I thought of him since i first heard his stuff. And still. When my wife was younger she worked for a while at The Main Point, where Bruce played several times. He found her in the hall and kissed her one night…
I think she’s had a crush on him ever since.

I suspect you aren't really a lyrics person. It's Springsteen's mastery of writing poignant lyrics about the working man, teenage angst, family, and real life that puts him 4th or 5th (the list gets updated every year) of the most albums on Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums of all times list behind the Beatles, Stones, the Who, and Bob Dylan. Hugely influenced by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Not to mention keeping huge stadium crowds mesmerized for four hour shows.

Here's four examples:

Ironically, I love poetry, have written it since I was fifteen, have added about fifty poems to the poetry thread here, and have published about a dozen or so poems in little journals. I also wrote lyrics for a band and for my own music.

I like and appreciate lyrics, but by and large I don't evaluate music on the basis of lyrics. A good lyric can strengthen a song and make it better as a work of art, more significant, more moving. But unfortunately, good lyrics can't do anything by way of causing me to like a musical artist. Lou Reed is a great lyricist, but I can't abide his music, same with Bruce. Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith have ordinary lyrics, but I don't care about that when it comes to their sound...

R.E.M is eminently listenable and sound great, and I never cared much that I can't make out the words, especially on the early albums. I can enjoy opera in a language I don't understand at all, etc.

Just my own taste...

Sheesh, such bitterness. I was going to ask if the boss banged your wife or something, but no I guess he was with Mrs. Elixir that night.

Let me preface my opinion by saying I don't besmirch any fans of any music, especially Springsteen fans being super passionate and seeming to get a transcendent experience from his music.

But to paraphrase Bart Simpson, contrary to what you have heard, there are no good Springsteen songs, with the following exceptions: Blinded by the Light, Rosalita, Born to Run, and if I'm drunk, Dancing in the Dark.

I would include Jungleland but that's obviously a poor imitation of The Battle of Epping Forest.

Don't forget Thunder Road:

The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison's singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again

Don't run back inside, darling
You know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me

I was bruised and battered
I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window
And didn't know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me wastin' away
On the streets of Philadelphia?

I walked the avenue, 'til my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
A thousand miles just to slip this skin

The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia?

How is it that Springsteen didn't get cancelled for these lyrics to "I'm on Fire"?

Hey little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go and leave you all alone? Mhmm
I got a bad desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do? Oh no
I can take you higher
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby
Edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley
Through the middle of my skull
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
And a freight train running through the middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Woo-ooh-ooh
Woo-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Woo-ooh-ooh
Woo-ooh-ooh

When did songs about adultery get people cancelled? Why didn’t Johnny Cash get cancelled for singing about shooting a man just to watch him die?

Hey, little girl is your daddy home...I got a bad desire? Its a little more than adultery. Don't know about the Johhny Cash song. I'll look into it. Maybe he should get cancelled too. Although, he is dead...
