And if the URL between the [IMG][/IMG] tags doesn't end with an image file extension (eg .jpg, .png or .gif), then you don't even need the preview to know that it won't work. (hint: .htm and .html are NOT image file extensions).

Well, the URL now points to an image; but it didn't load on my phone, probably because the owner of the server has blocked links to other websites (such as this forum).
That's a problem that's more difficult to capture at your end; because the image is in your browser's cache, it will load on your machine, because the site doesn't try to download a copy from the remote server. But it won't load on anyone else's machine.
You can get around that by using the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" option in the image dialog, which you can reach by clicking the image button provided on the toolbar when composing your posts.
