In some books written in the 1930's or 40's the word 'boner' was a synonym for 'mistake.' "He pulled a boner" had a different meaning then.

This thread reminds me of an incident when I was in 8th grade. The principal came over the classroom loud speaker to commend a bunch students who did something or other (don't remember exactly what it was). In the middle of announcing the names, he said, "Christine......um....<cough>...10 second pause...ahem.... Boner". It was a hot day, and most classrooms had their windows open. You could hear the entire school howling with laughter. Turns out the girl's last name was spelled "Bonar", but apparently its French and pronounced as "Bone Air". That poor girl. She was kind of a new student. I'm sure she was embarassed.
