That is almost a routine experience for New Mexicans who travel back East, I know so many people who've had their citizenship challenged when they say they're from New Mexico. I used to live in Durango, CO; I once mentioned to my (Oregonian) great-grandmother that it was a common habit for Durangoans to go down to New Mexico for bulk grocery trips, as the nearest Sam's Club was in Farmington. "Oh, wow," she replied, "I don't know if I'd want to fish out my passport just to go get groceries"

I admit that if one has to be a Mexican, it's probably best to be a New one.
 
Yes, but is Colorado the state most widely believed by Americans to not be part of the United States?

How about Nova Scotia? The non-State more Americans believe is part of the US?
