That is almost a routine experience for New Mexicans who travel back East, I know so many people who've had their citizenship challenged when they say they're from New Mexico. I used to live in Durango, CO; I once mentioned to my (Oregonian) great-grandmother that it was a common habit for Durangoans to go down to New Mexico for bulk grocery trips, as the nearest Sam's Club was in Farmington. "Oh, wow," she replied, "I don't know if I'd want to fish out my passport just to go get groceries"
Wait... New Mexico is a U.S. state?

New Mexico was part of Mexico. In 1848, the United States paid Mexico $15 million for the Mexican Cession land, which included present-day New Mexico.
