This is absurd. People have had their travel approved; Bought tickets and accommodation, and (now that it's too late to get refunds) have had their travel approvals suspended or cancelled without any clear reason, nor any viable path to appeal.

The US has for decades been unwelcoming to tourists. Which is their choice; But if you don't want to welcome visitors (with money to spend) from around the world, why bid to host the World Cup? And why fuck people about? If you have grounds to refuse an Esta (or don't have sufficient information to be sure), then don't issue one. If you do issue one, you need a very good reason to then withdraw it again - if you have the slightest interest in attracting tourists to your country.

I am now wondering, given that this is almost 1% of the entire country's population, if a good deal of non-immigrant birthright citizens are on that list.

Is the list public?

I don’t know. It was in a story on This American Life this week. The 6,000 list this got media attention last year when the unalived people started showing up at SSA offices to get themselves off the list and they all had the same arbitrary fake death date. The 2.7 million list was a new revelation and the person bringing it forward quit the SSA after DHS tried to ram that one through with malicious intent. He has filed a whistleblower complaint in Congress but I don’t know where that stands. The whistleblower was credible and he seems to have receipts. He is also very procedural and protective of sensitive information so running this through official channels.

Which part of the federal law with respect to immigration do you feel is unreasonable?

Well, some of us have a problem with the obvious AI hunt for "criminals". Absolutely rigged towards false positives, accusation or even association = guilty, deport without due process.

And how about the thousands of legal immigrants they declared dead. They wanted to do the same thing to millions.

You incorrectly get into the Social Security death index, you have a lot of headaches.

Let's start with a very basic premise: Are local law enforcement and local government in sanctuary cities cooperating with federal law with respect to immigration? What is the premise of a sanctuary city in the first place?

The premise is harm reduction.

By letting illegals associate with the government without being deported you get things like licensed, insured drivers vs unlicensed people who will hit and run.

Or look at the drug business--a lack of legal recourse for misdeeds means it's much more violent than it otherwise would be.

That seems like a remarkably stupid, short-sighted, and vindictive change to the laws.

I suppose if the intent is to make it much, much harder to immigrate, this is a way to get that done. But it seems horribly unfair to people who already came here with an understanding of the rules as they were. Are those people grandfathered in?

Now do you understand why we have a problem with the federal laws??

And, remember, there is no appeal to a counselor decision rejecting allowing you to enter the US. You leave, think you'll be allowed back by the current administration?

That's certainly possible.

It might also be worth considering that SS isn't as good at maintaining accurate death information as it should be, and identity theft using the SSNs of people who are deceased is a pretty common approach for fraud. That includes dead SSNs being used by people here illegally so they can provide it for employment.
