64-year-old James Baker was shot Saturday while students practiced weapon malfunction drills. The Clermont County Sheriff's Office says about 10 people were taking the class at the time at KayJayGun Shop in Monroe Township, about 25 miles southeast of Cincinnati.

What a shame that he died from promoting the more widespread use of guns.

Where did you read that he was promoting the widespread use of guns? Oh, you just made that up.

This was an instructor that was teaching a gun safety course. Obviously something that is needed by perspective gun owners, since he was accidently shot by a student during a lesson.

And as with many dangerous activities, there is always this risk. It could've been arrows or the hooves of a horse.

It was a concealed carry class. Now try to make the connection between that fact and the observation in the OP. You can do it.

Hopefully he did not die in vain, and his demise did educate his students to the fact that guns are dangerous - even if as some say, they don't kill people.

Which is why I generally don't treat weapons like toys (going 'shooting' for 'sport' aka PLAYING with them), nor why I generally walk behind or get on horses when there are less dangerous alternatives.

There are many OTHER things someone could choose to play with that are more appropriate. Like low power laser toys. And nerf.

But, some people want to get their rocks off with actual dangerous weapons, rather than drugs. Or to make themselves part of a weapon, ie, the part of the gun that does the aiming and trigger pulling. Despite not having a mandate or agreement, however tentative, to be the one who is authorized to defend with deadly force.

So you're telling me you actually have a problem with people who ride horses for fun?

That you think people should never do anything dangerous but literally be content enjoying themselves with nothing tougher than foam or more sold than a light beam?

This is too silly to be true. I guess until you tell me otherwise, I'm considering your post a joke. I hope you don't tell me otherwise...

He owned a store that sold guns, advertised to try to sell more of them, and advertised classes where people could come in and become acquainted with them to use them ahnd sell even more.

Observation skillz 101.

Interestingly, in the local article, he wasn't even in the room. He was in the next room, sitting at his desk.

Yes. Because some people have a ridiculous fetish with being reckless fucking idiots, and making themselves into weapons in the context of every day life doesn't mean that I or any of the other sane people should put up with such bullshit.

I, and for that matter most of the rest of the world can have a perfectly good, balanced, and fulfilled life without playing with guns, bows, and et cetera. People break. Even the healthy ones. Allowing a world where we let those people become DANGEROUS before that happens is foolhardy. We all have dangerous, insane parts of ourselves that we don't like, and that we keep bottled up and far from the light of day, and because we are barely smarter than apes, and much more controlled by our flawed feelings than any of us is likely to admit. That means that being a weapon in the context of every day life is pretty much the most irresponsible thing you can do.

You call it silly that I want people to stop playing games with dangerous tools. I call it dangerous and deranged to want me to trust someone ignorant enough to disregard his fellow man and his own human shortcomings enough to play with a weapon.

We have things suitable for play. They are called TOYS. Go buy and play with those instead if you want to play.

A weapon malfunction is when a pistol is most likely to be fired unintentionally. It requires awareness and practice to not pull the trigger. Beyond that, the shooter is also most likely to be distracted with trying to clear the jammed cartridge and not be aware which way the barrel is pointed.

Not knowing any more about this incident, based on my training experiences(non-fire arm related) with power tools and machinery, 10 students is too many for a single instructor.

Seems to be a situation where one-on-one instruction would be most appropriate.

For some reason, that tidbit made me smile.

Your belief that it is okay to strip people of their rights in the name of protecting them from themselves is just fucking frightening.

Hopefully if or when this shit you spew ever gains traction there will still be enough people with guns to put your fascism in the ground where it belongs.

Not that I'll be one of them, of course; I don't like guns.

Didn't make me smile. I just hope that this accident maybe helps prevent a kid from becoming a similar type of victim.

No. It's not about protecting you from yourself. It's about protecting OTHERS. What? You think that nutbag who shot up Pulse thought he was doing something wrong? What about the people who bomb and shoot up abortion clinics. Do you think they thought they had something wrong with themselves? Human minds, and ironically ESPECIALLY the kinds prone to becoming weapons in the context of every day life, are liable to snap, and hurt people. Or just accidentally hurt people. You shouldn't have one if you don't have need of one. Hunting for food or ecological control purposes? Great. Walking around being prepared to kill people? NOPE. Hiring for the sake of 'sport', killing to get your jollies? NOPE. Perfecting your skills to kill people or animals, for sport or violence by bringing actual, live weapons with you? NOPE.

When you plan a society around an assumption of violent intent and disregard for your fellow persons, by carting lethal weapons around, you create an environment ripe for tragedies like Pulse, or this instructor's death.

Try to focus. This thread isn't about mass shootings, or self-defense with weapons, or any of the other stupidity in this recent post of yours.

It's about a person and his acquaintances engaging in a dangerous pastime (like so many people do - sky diving, mountain climbing, car racing) whose life happened to be claimed by that pastime (as occasionally happens with such things).

It's tragic. But aside from enacting your fascist, fun-police population control policies, there is little that could be done by society to prevent such things - though Bronzeage brought up something that wasn't too bad an idea.

Meh. You play with guns and end up getting shot, few people are going to be too sad about it.
