January 6 Hearings Live

I was thinking if the Democrats want to be dicks, they can challenge some of the states that Trump won. Florida! There is no way that Trump won Florida! People are saying there was widespread election fraud in Florida. The machines were flipping ballots from Biden to tRump. And, then there's Ohio. No way Trump won Ohio. Of course, I'm being facetious, but it would be kind of fun to give them a taste of their own bitter medicine. :D Maybe if they did it, it would make the Republicans see how stupid they look and what an unnecessary circus they are creating.

These are not just individuals making spurious claims. It is a network of well-funded people fabricating stories and spreading through fundamentalist churches, ministers preaching them, conservative media giving them credence with testimony, dark PACs, thousands of propaganda websites...some phony videos. This effort has taken tens of millions of dollars to fabricate, propagate, fester, and sustain. We can't counter it effectively as individuals making narratives because we can't mimic the infrastructural support and multiple fraudulent testimonies backing them up.

Pence rejects Trump's demands to try to overturn the 2020 election

"I do not believe that the founders of our country intended to invest the vice president with unilateral authority to decide which electoral voters should be counted during the Joint session of Congress, and no vice president in American history has ever asserted such authority," he wrote in a three-page letter released by his office.

"Instead, vice presidents presiding over joint sessions has uniformly follow the Electoral Count Act, conducting the proceedings in an orderly manner even where the count resulted in the defeat of their party or their own candidacy," he added.

Can Trump fire the VP?

McConnell addressing the Senate now. Astounding. The veil is coming off and it will send tremors through the Republican party.

McConnell is agreeing to accept Arizona's vote because — although these were not his exact words — he doesn't want to sink to the Democrats' level.

Apparently there will be 2-hour debates for each of six disputed states. And according to PBS, the debates may be longer than 2 hours due to COVID restrictions. After wasting 2+ hours on Arizona, it will be interesting if Senate and House come to their senses, or if the Republicans drag their crap out to the wee hours. (What's stopping Speaker Pelosi from entertaining a motion to dispense with these debates?)

Meanwhile, is Trump planning to lead his Deplorables to rant outside the Capitol Building? D.C. has strict gun control; were those assholes all checked for weapons?

ETA: Many thousands of Trumpists are trying to break into the Capitol, violent scuffles with Capital and federal security forces have been reported.

EETA: In a spirit of compromise, Ted Cruz is now proposing an electoral commission a la 1876!

Did he say that with a straight face?

Yes. He did also say the conspiracy theories had their chance in court. Given he is a Republican, I'll take it the bad with the good. The bar of expectations is low.

Sorry, lpetrich, that's fake news.

And typical attention to detail.

Capital building staff have been warned to stay away from outside windows and prepare to seek safe shelter.

Protestors for Trump in DC have breached police barricades.

They are on the capitol building steps.

Police used tear gas but are now standing down.

The protestors are being entitled, breaching barricades, and trespassing federal property but are currently being relatively peaceful otherwise.

This is about to turn into something.

...

So Rep McCarthy is asking that the protests remain peaceful (via Twitter ???).

Rep McCarthy on Twitte said:
Thank you to Capitol Police for protecting the People's House.

Protesters have a Constitutionally-protected right to be heard, but I urge them to remain peaceful.
The GOP is proclaiming this election is being stolen....our democracy is being trashed by the Democrats... we must stop this injustice!!!

...but don't over-react about it.

Yeah, fuck you McCarthy.

Yeah, the cops seem to be exercising an awful lot of restraint. Can't qwhite figure out why.
Plenty of white people gassed for the Bible Photo Op. These protesters, however, are idiots and have guns and are suffering from chronic rage boner blue balls, which makes this a very dangerous situation.
