January 6 Hearings Live

Storming The U.S. Capitol Was About Maintaining White Power In America | FiveThirtyEight

In effect, many white people are concerned that they will be treated the way that they seem to think nonwhites ought to be treated.

Larry Bartels's research:

I've seen many right-wingers talk about welfare recipients as if they are living in great luxury.

Back to the Capitol attackers.
Instead, we must characterize them as they are: They are a dangerous mob of grievous white people worried that their position in the status hierarchy is threatened by a multiracial coalition of Americans who brought Biden to power and defeated Trump, whom back in 2017 Ta-Nehisi Coates called the first white president. Making this provocative point, Coates wrote, “It is often said that Trump has no real ideology, which is not true — his ideology is white supremacy, in all its truculent and sanctimonious power.” So, when we think about those who gathered in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and who will surely continue their advance in opposition to democratic rule, let it not be lost on us that they do not simply come in defense of Donald Trump. They come in defense of white supremacy.

Only in America could the alleged leader of a “white supremacist coup” look like Sammy Davis Jr.

The House is now beginning two hours of debate on the article of impeachment charging President Trump with "incitement of insurrection."

Pelosi is the first speaker.

"He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love," Pelosi says. She says that removing Trump from office is "a constitutional remedy to make sure the republic is safe from this man." Pelosi says the rioters "were not patriots," they were "domestic terrorists."

She asks House members, looking at the GOP side: "I ask you to search your souls and answer this question: is the president's war on democracy in keeping with the Constitution?"

Jim Jordan now says Democrats want to "cancel the president," one week to the day since insurrectionists attacked the Capitol.

He says Dems are "canceling the president and anyone who disagrees with them" - right after he said Liz Cheney should step down for voting to impeach.

GOP Rep. Tom McClintock is saying that all Trump did is give "a fiery speech to a group of partisans," and that most of the protesters on Wednesday were peaceful. He calls impeachment "petty, vindictive and gratuitous." His speech was met with scattered applause from Republicans.

Democrat Zoe Lofgren: "If we don't impeach, we will fail our own oath to protect and defend the United States against all enemies foreign, and yes, domestic."

Adam Schiff, last year's lead impeachment manager, gives very brief remarks: "Let us say enough. Enough."

GOP Rep. Issa says Trump "isn't a clear and present danger."

"The president has acted essentially the same for four years," he says, perhaps inadvertently echoing people who have criticized Trump since the beginning.

Dem Rep. Cedric Richmond, in his last speech on the House floor before joining the Biden admin, says GOP members may have been "co-conspirators" and asks his Republicans to "stand up, man up, woman up."

"Simply put, we told you so. Richmond out," he concludes.

Dem Rep. Hakeem Jeffries: "Donald Trump is a living, breathing impeachable offense."

Majority Whip Clyburn, third-ranking Dem in House, blames Trump for inciting last week's violence: "If we do not hold him accountable...a future attempt may very well be acceptable."

Rep. Ken Buck said that one Democratic member said Trump supporters should be harassed in public.

"That's what I said," says Rep. Maxine Waters casually, walking past him.
Harassed? BAD IDEA. Confronted, yes, harassed, no.

In his speech, Dem Rep. Jamie Raskin angrily notes that rioters wanted to hang Mike Pence and threatened violence against lawmakers.

Raskin: "They could have killed us all."

Democrats have booed Matt Gaetz, who has made reference to the "Biden crime family." The disdain for him on that side of the aisle is palpable.

"This president has faced unprecedented hatred...from big media, big Tech, and big egos."

Calls for order after Gaetz starts yelling about the anti-racism protests over the summer. "The left in America has incited far more political violence in the right!"

Gaetz received applause from Republicans when he concluded.
Big Tech? I thought that he believed in capitalism.
Dem Rep. Joaquin Castro: "Donald Trump is the most dangerous man to ever occupy the Oval Office." He asks Republicans, "What do you think they [rioters] would have done if they had gotten in? And who do you think sent them?"

Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy: "Some say the riots were caused by Antifa. There is absolutely no evidence of that. And conservatives should be the first to say so. "

Minority Leader McCarthy: "A vote to impeach would further divide this nation. A vote to impeach would further fan the flames of partisan division." (Reminder that McCarthy voted to object to the Electoral College results last week.)

He says he supports censuring the president.

McCarthy, saying what so many Republicans still won't: "Let’s be clear, Joe Biden will be sworn in as the President of the United States in one week because he won the election."
Great that Rep. McCarthy is willing to concede that.
GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert, saying that Democrats haven't been held accountable for anti-racism protests over the summer: "I call bullcrap." (First time I've ever heard "bullcrap" on the House floor.)

GOP Congressman Dan Newhouse said that he would support impeachment after releasing a statement saying he would do so.

"There is no excuse for President Trump's actions," Newhouse said, adding that he would vote for impeachment "with a heavy heart." Democrats applauded after.

GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler on why she will vote to impeach: "I am not choosing a side, I am choosing truth. It is the only way to defeat fear."

Shout out to all the lawmakers who speak so succinctly that I barely have time to take down some of their quotes

Quite a few Republicans claiming they are being silenced while they speak on live TV
Especially since conservatives claim to be opposed to making claims of victimhood.

Panic Buttons In Ayanna Pressley's Office Were Ripped Out Before The Riot

It's becoming clear that the MAGA Sedition Riot had helpers inside the House of Representatives.

Most horrifying, the chief of staff for Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts told The Boston Globe that the panic buttons in their office had been ripped out prior to the rioting.

As people rushed out of other buildings on the Capitol grounds, staffers in Pressley’s office barricaded the entrance with furniture and water jugs that had piled up during the pandemic. Groh pulled out gas masks and looked for the special panic buttons in the office.

“Every panic button in my office had been torn out — the whole unit,” she said, though they could come up with no rationale as to why. She had used them before and hadn’t switched offices since then. As they were escorted to several different secure locations, Groh and Pressley and her husband tried to remain calm and vigilant — not only of rioters but of officers they did not know or trust, she said.

As a reminder, she Tweeted twice, in real time, as to the status of Speaker Pelosi during whatever the hell that was last week.

Multiple "ok" signs being given in that.

Those are 3 percenter hand signs.

But that photo was taken in December at a gun rights rally.

Zip, can you start vetting your memes for once?

Question though... Is that her in the photo? Is that actually some of the DC terrorists? At which point does it matter when the picture was taken? Does it matter one bit to the fact that she DID communicate highly sensitive information on the status and whereabouts of congresspersons and their offices/effects on the day of an attack, to the attackers?

From The Hill:
article said:
In a statement to The Hill later on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Pressley said “the matter has been raised with the relevant agencies and is currently under investigation.” The representative said the “duress buttons” had previously been “installed throughout the Congresswoman’s office suite.”

“Our staff has used these devices before and they are regularly tested and maintained,” they said.

“The safety of the Congresswoman, her family and our staff remain our top priority and at the direction of the Congresswoman, the Sergeant at Arms oversaw the installation of new duress buttons throughout the office following the attack,” they added.

The Hill has reached the House sergeant-at-arms and U.S. Capitol Police.
This is a serious accusation! Much like the claim some of the rioters were being provided a tour of the Capitol the day before the riot. Two things need to be confirmed:

1) They have been replaced since the riot
2) It wasn't in the process of being replaced by coincidence

Exotic and outrageous claims need a very high level of confirmation. Because if what the Representative said is true, and some sabotaged her equipment before the riot, that raises the scope of what happened to death penalty sort of treason.

It very much does matter! We are talking between the difference of treason (actual premeditated treason) and merely having assholes for supporters and taking pictures with them.

If she takes this photo the day before the riot, and she gives them a personal tour, and she tweets Pelosi's whereabouts (or not whereabouts), that is extraordinarily troubling.

But if this photo is from December, there would need to be many more dots connected to make this photo criminal.

That's her, but I have no idea if those people were at the Capitol and I doubt that the guy who posted it does either.

And Sherrill didn't name who she's saying brought people on a tour.

Jamie Raskin Leads the Push to Impeach Trump - The New York Times - "Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland, lost his 25-year-old son to suicide on New Year’s Eve. Then he survived the mob attack on the Capitol. Now, he leads the impeachment effort."

Jamaal Bowman on Twitter: "I see Republicans saying the president isn’t receiving “due process.”

Kalief Browder, Breonna Taylor, Ramarley Graham, and countless others didn’t get their due process.

Trump can get his due process in the Senate. We are moving forward with impeaching the president NOW." / Twitter

I agree. Right-wingers often seem to think that only they deserve due process.

Congress ought to expel that 5th columnist. Or at least strip her of all committee assignments.

it definitely speaks to double and triple checking claims right now. Trump waged war on Poe's Law, making it impossible to discern between fact or fiction. But I guess when it comes to sedition and treason, we need to assume it is false unless we can provide one or two additional sources that back the claim or the reporting of the claim. Like Pressley's claim on the panic button was published by the Boston Globe, not Hugh Dyckman on Twitter.

>@PunchbowlNews AM: If you wanted a picture of the partisan ugliness that is the modern-day House of Representatives, let us tell you about last night.

Less than a wk after an attack on Capitol by an angry mob of Trump supporters, @SpeakerPelosi instituted a host of new rules: Members would have to go through metal detectors to get on the floor, police would search their bags and they would be forced to wear masks or risk a fine. House Republicans sort of freaked out. When the House voted Tuesday night, several groups of GOP lawmakers shoved past the Capitol Police manning the magnetometers outside the House doors, refusing to acknowledge they were even there, as witnessed by us and @MEPFuller.

,@rep_stevewomack bristled at some cops, “You are creating a problem you do not understand the ramifications of!” @RepMullin said, “It’s my constitutional right” and “They can’t stop me,” according to @mkraju of CNN. @RepAndyBiggsAZ of Arizona was succinct: “This is crap.” >@RodneyDavis yelled at @LeaderHoyer calling the new procedures alternately “horseshit” and “bullshit,” as witnessed by Punchbowl and @ESCochrane. @SteveScalise said Democrats were trying to “impede the ability for members to come and vote.” ,@ByronDonalds complained, “So now we have TSA at the Capitol?” @laurenboebert who has bragged about carrying a gun to the Capitol, had a brief standoff when she refused to let police officers look in her bag. She got on the floor anyway. <@RepMeijer apologized to the police afterward. “I am sorry some of my colleagues are being assholes.”
Jamaal Bowman on Twitter: "When a Black boy gets killed by the police, they wanna talk about “compliance.”

When Republicans want to bring guns onto the floor of Congress, ignore mask rules, and disregard Capitol security, they wanna talk about constitutional rights.

That’s bullshit." / Twitter

I agree. Republicans are being whiny weenies.

Sam Harris on Twitter: "When the history of this period is written, we will learn just how close we came to losing our country to Trumpism—and it will be sickening regardless of any bad things that might occur under Biden. Trump was a bulwark against nothing but decency, sanity, and the rule of law." / Twitter
