January 6 Hearings Live

IO, AP, and CB issued this statement about their "no" vote. From Statement from Reps. Pressley, Bush and Omar on Emergency Security Supplemental Vote | Representative Ayanna Pressley:
On January 6th, some Republican Members of Congress and the former President incited an insurrection that they refuse to accept responsibility for and continue to deny to this day. A bill that pours $1.9 billion into increased police surveillance and force without addressing the underlying threats of organized and violent white supremacy, radicalization, and disinformation that led to this attack will not prevent it from happening again. Increasing law enforcement funds does not inherently protect or safeguard the Capitol Hill or surrounding D.C. community. In fact, this bill is being passed before we have any real investigation into the events of January 6th and the failures involved because Republicans have steadfastly obstructed the creation of a January 6th commission.

The bill also does far too little to address the unspeakable trauma of the countless officers, staff, and support workers who were on site that day – dedicating fifty times more money to the creation of a ‘quick reaction force’ than it does to counseling. We cannot support this increased funding while many of our communities continue to face police brutality while marching in the streets, and while questions about the disparate response between insurrectionists and those protesting in defense of Black lives go unanswered.

While we appreciate the efforts of our colleagues to put forth a supplemental that provides necessary pay to our essential workers, there must be a comprehensive investigation and response to the attack on our Capitol and our democracy, one that addresses the root cause of the insurrection: white supremacy. This bill prioritizes more money for a broken system that has long upheld and protected the white supremacist violence we saw on display that day.

We look forward to working towards systemic policy solutions that meet the scale and scope of the crises our communities and our nation face.

It was a vote on principle, and not on hatred of cops or whatever. The principle is a principle that right-wingers eagerly embrace for government spending that they dislike.

Put your MAGA hat on for a minute. You are a patriotic American. You don't understand what that means beyond flying the American flag and a lifelong commitment to buying Chevys because unbeknownst to you Chevrolet's commercials often use an appeal to patriotism to sell their fucking vehicles. But you are a good American. You know it. You've got nothing against "The Other People" as long as they behave, don't mooch off the system and live in their own neighborhoods. Nothing wrong with that now is there. You love your country and there is finally a president who speaks plainly and understands where you're coming from. And the only place you get your news is from Fox. You're not some nutjob who listens to all that other crazy stuff, Newsmax, OAN, and the like. No. You're normal. You even know Tucker Carlson is a little out there but you best keep that to yourself.

So you drove all the way to DC on January 6th because you're a good patriotic American. You thought it to be a massive rally and that's it. You didn't think about what it could become. And the crowd was massive. The energy was palpable. Trump speaks. Now you're a bit uncomfortable. The crowd is really getting wild. But you came all this way and there's no fights going on so you're not going to leave now. And it's on to the Capitol. You're in the middle of the crowd. You're not sure you could leave if you wanted to. And now the rush. It's go up the steps or get trampled. Oh well. You know this is wrong but everybody and his brother is inside now. They're not going to bust everyone. You do things you normally would not do because everyone around you is and you can't get out. What are you going to do, just stand there? You do some seemingly harmless stuff. Rifle through some papers. Toss them on the floor. Wander around with a group until you think it's okay to leave.

The devil made me do it.

Interesting they brought up the LA Four. Another highly offensive spectacle.

Well said. (And God Bless America!)

What gets me is that they (MAGA hats) are so thoroughly conditioned to brush off criticisms of orange judas with the handily provided catchphrases "never trumper", "fake news", "horrible person", etc.. There's more than one handy phrase for every occasion, whether it's inciting, aiding and abetting treason and murder a la 1/6, or merely illegally paying off porn stars to influence an election, there's a suitable handwave quip. There is no source that is reliable anywhere - except for the guy who has continually bled them for money, then tried to destroy the Country with which he himself is conflated by those same followers.
I don't get it. Is this all a consequence of a third-world quality education system? Something in the water?

GOP blocks sending the January 6th Commission out of committee. 6 Republicans voted for approval. 9 cowardly Republicans didn't vote at all. We had over half a dozen investigations into Benghazi, but a bunch of riled up Trump supporters (the guy that tried to steal an election) storm the Capitol, forcing the Electoral College meeting to be evacuated, and we are left with no investigation.

That’s despicable, but hardly surprising. They may not be able to openly say it but they wanted the coup to succeed.

But what’s to stop the House from conducting an investigation? House Committees investigate all sorts of shit. Did 60 senators approve every Benghazi investigation? So I say, just do it. Investigate it. Fuck bipartisanship. I don’t understand the Democrats intent at all here. Do what they did and just fucking investigate the shit out of this. 9 times.

The Attorney General should be looking into it.

Treason is still a crime.

But arrests must start with the ring leader.

You start with little guys who turn on bigger guys and keep going up.

Normally that is the case but it is not necessary here.

Lying about an election for months. Telling people to come to Washington. Don't forget your helmets, flak jackets and spears. Inciting them to violence with lies.

Only a fool could not clearly see what happened.

Michele Bachmann: The "Progressive Left" Attacked the Capitol to Cancel Trump
"Jan. 6, we're all told that that's the worst day that ever happened, these were the worst riots in America," Bachmann said. "It absolutely wasn't. It is my opinion that this was a theatrical event that the progressive left put on. The individuals who were the instigators, who brought this about, these were agitators brought in to create this problem. I believe it was specifically done to rebrand Donald Trump as being an insurrectionist and a leader of a terrorist movement. I also believe that this was done to rebrand the Make America Great agenda - because remember, that was considered extremely popular by about 80 million Americans so they wanted to rebrand Make America Great as an evil thing and those of us who supported Donald Trump and that agenda as evil and terrorists."
Which is it? Are the participants heroic patriots? Or are they left-wing terrorists who posed as Trumpies? Complete with some years of social-media posts about being a Trumpie.

If the riot was caused by left wing agitators to make Trump look bad, why did he do nothing to stop it? Does that mean he agreed to make himself look bad? Doesn’t *that* also look bad?

Putin sees 'double standard' in US Capitol riot prosecutions - BBC News
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the US of double standards for its treatment of the Capitol rioters.

He said it was wrong for the US to criticise crackdowns on anti-government protests overseas, while prosecuting Americans with "political demands".

...
He also denied suggestions that recent cyber-attacks on US companies had originated in Russia, and rejected claims that Moscow had meddled in American elections.

Mr Putin reserved some of his most stinging criticism for US condemnation of a crackdown on anti-government protests by Moscow's regional ally, Belarus. He hit back by suggesting the US Capitol rioters were being treated unfairly.

"They weren't just a crowd of robbers and rioters," Mr Putin said of the Trump supporters who stormed Congress on 6 January and temporarily suspended a session to certify Mr Biden as the winner of last November's election. "Those people had come with political demands."
Those attackers were on the side of his preferred candidate for US President, and that may be another reason.
Mr Putin also rebuked the West for its criticism of Russian authorities' response to anti-Kremlin demonstrations, including jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Opposition protests across Russia earlier this year were suppressed with crackdowns. Riot police were seen beating and dragging protesters away, while thousands of people were detained.

The Russian leader told business leaders that protesters in Europe have faced an even tougher police response, with some shot in the eye by what he mockingly called "democratic rubber bullets".

It is not clear what he was referring to, but a number of French demonstrators were blinded by rubber bullets fired by police during the so-called yellow vest rallies that began in late 2018.
VP and JB are scheduled to meet in a summit meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on June 16.

Don't you wonder what would happen if a couple thousand Russians stormed the Kremlin with "political demands"?
I don't.
