John McCain dead at 81

No, I liked him even before everything became about 45. Had principles and stuck with them, and I appreciate that in a person even if I disagreed with a lot of those principles and opposed many of his projects. At least, with McCain, you felt like the other side was arguing in good faith, not holding up false positions or wading in double-speak.

I agree. Unlike most current "Republicans", John McCain appeared to hold true to the traditional Republican values. I disagreed with a majority of his positions and views, but I felt he believed in what he said. And, that he was willing to compromise when it made sense, and he was willing to stand firm when he felt he had to.

I thought McCain was a typical Repub who played the media game better than most.

In the age of Trump, he now seems like George Washington.

Not so obscure movie quote - "Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."

^^^ agreeing with all of the above

And right on cue, Arizona GOP senate candidate Kelli Ward accuses John McCain of dying in order to push a "negative narrative" about her.

Shit, should I have posted this in the "Day without stupid" thread?
Not his dying, that he announced the end of treatment at a ‘questionable’ time. Man she must be real pissed that McCain went the full monty and died during her mammoth bus tour.

Ward believes that she's somehow owed his seat. She's run for it before, and when his diagnosis was made public she went on a local talk radio show and basically made the case that since she'd come in 2nd place to McCain in the primary, then if the governor were to appoint a replacement she deserved to be the choice.

She's nuts.

Agreed. Every republican who just kinda sticks up to Trump seems like George Washington (Bush, McCain, Graham) and etc.

This is pretty vile, if accurate:

Trump rejected plans for a White House statement praising McCain

President Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised the heroism and life of Sen. John McCain, telling senior aides he preferred to issue a tweet before posting one Saturday night that did not include any kind words for the late Arizona Republican.

*snip*

...Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising McCain’s life was not released.

This is in line with what we already know about him. No surprises. And it is apparently in line with what 2 out of every 5 Americans either likes or is able to tolerate. Trump's approval ratings have held steady at an average of roughly 42% for weeks now. His base isn't going to abandon him, and there is a middle ground that wants to pretend he isn't as bad as he appears to be. Trump brings out the worst in people, but it is already there to be brought out. We need another leader who brings out the better half of our natures.

I'm old enough to remember when the left and the media called McCain the new Hitler. But who can recall a decade ago?
1)Everyone is compared to Hitler by some fringe nut except Jill Stein and Mitt Romney, which is why they will never be president.

2)The left and the media made a concerted effort to compare McCain to Hitler? Bullshit. Most 2008 memes about McCain looked like this:

But if you want to talk about a decade ago, this is what people like yourself believed in:

As you said, who could remember a decade ago? Not you, obviously.

Not the "left" or the "media" that I recall, and I'm probably a lot older than you. Perhaps you need to change your news filter. It seems to have gotten clogged up with too much right wing muck.

I followed that election quite closely and don't remember much of that at all. What media? Citation?

I do remember after a few Palin appearances, McCain was called an idiot for making that choice. No Hitler though. Some of his more graceless doings before his run were dug up and reminded us all of his sometimes not particularly good ideas.

What Trausti is trying to say is he is old enough, he has dementia and remembers things that never happened.

McCain was never Hitler. His running mate was quite underwhelming and we had no idea the movement she was about to spawn. McCain suffered a few issues.

  1. Following 8 years of W. No Republican was ever going to win that election. America had suffered Republican fatigue.
  2. He wasn't McCain, but Pod-Person McCain. That wasn't 2000 McCain running for office.
  3. Wasn't willing to go below the belt.
  4. VP running mate was a complete featherweight mentally.

He was one of the 'honorable opposition'. Although I thought his opinions and policies were often badly mistaken, I was sure *he* thought they were best for the nation.

That disgusting piece of shit in the WH has the flag flying at full staff this morning. Couldn't bring himself to say a single thing about McCain's life, accomplishments or character.
What a chicken shit.
