See, I get that joke. I dated a Lutheran my Senior Year in HS.

To be truthful, all jokes are inside jokes. If you are ignorant of culture on which the joke is based, you simply don't get it. And if you don't get, you won't get it. Best to just let it go.

It's funny because it's word play. A pun. Playing on 'matthew' being a name of one of the gospels in The Books, pretending that the other big names of the gospels have some sort of power over Matthew because of the connection on the table of contents.
