If you are ignorant of culture on which the joke is based, you simply don't get it.

It's funny because it's word play. A pun. Playing on 'matthew' being a name of one of the gospels in The Books, pretending that the other big names of the gospels have some sort of power over Matthew because of the connection on the table of contents.OK, so why is that funny?Yes.
