Political Rant Funny Images II

The average life expectancy for someone who is 160 years old is about -71.

No, it's not. Life expectancy at 160 is about 160 years, with a remaining life expectancy of a tiny fraction above zero.

Nobody is 160 years old and still alive. Odds for any 160 year old body, are that it has been dead for 40-75 years.
If you can find actuarial tables that indicate otherwise, I'd be greatly amused to read them.

I've often thought that a realistic post-apocalypse blockbuster film would have all the protagonists running around armed to the teeth completely naked (except for boots....)

There is an anime series Dr. Stone (of course not that realistic) where everyone on earth is turned to stone. 3700 years later a scientific genius is accidentally freed. He figures out the chemical mixture that freed him and restores a couple friends of his, but then is forced to free a big strong guy to help fend off a wild animal attack. The strong guy wants to only restore the young and strong to get away from the 'evils' of modern society, and starts smashing the stone statues of anyone he thinks is unacceptable. The scientist flees, and finds a village that is the decedents of people who were on the space station when the event happened.

One year later the 'strong uncorrupted' people are living in caves, with stone spears and very simple animal skin clothing. The 'kingdom of science' has developed glass blowing, anti-biotics, a water wheel generator, electric lights, franklin stoves, glasses for corrective vision, and a number of other things created as steps towards needed technology.

Yea, in a post-apocalyptic story I would expect most food not in cans to go bad within a month or two. Any survivors would need to either become farmers by then or good hunter-gatherers by then.

There was an episode of Trapper John, MD where the doctors were kidnapped by survivalists to assist one of their members.
When the doctors said, 'We need to take him to a hospital where they have medical supplies,' the surviviots said, "Hell, we're prepared for the end of the world!" and left them in the infirmary.

Most of the drugs were the free samples drug companies send pharmacists and doctors, and half were expired. And this is while drug stores were still doing business.

Who actually meets these people? You kind of have to go out of your way to meet them, don't you? I haven't met any myself, but I have watched a few episodes of Doomsday Preppers, and it seems most of them DO prepare for the things mentioned above. One couple has been growing their own food for about 20 years, canning it and storing it in their shelter. Their whole life is growing, cooking and storing foods and supplies for "when the time comes'. Many DPs don't have regular daytime jobs. But, yes, they do seem to be pretty heavily armed and fortified as well.

I do know one person who identifies as a prepper. You are right, at least in this particular case. He had a well put in on his property so is no longer connected to the county water system, plants a garden every year and cans the produce. Amazingly, he has a small warehouse that is stocked 'slap full' with everything from food and seeds to tools and hardware including three five gallon buckets full of medicines and medical supplies. And yes, he does have rifles in three calibers (and a shit-load of ammo) to take game if needed, small caliber for squirrels and rabbits to high caliber for deer and bear.

He's fun to go camping with. We go out to an island several times a year for about a week and live on oysters, shrimp, crab, and fish.

Around here we just call them the Amish.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I go "off the grid" several times of year myself, and often fantasize about making it a full time thing, but I just don't have the balls to completely pull the plug. I find I like my little creature comforts too much, especially as I get older. :)

One thing I learned about watching Doomsday Preppers is there are a lot of different reasons why people assume the end of society is nigh. Nuclear war, civil unrest, etc. What reason does your prepper friend cite?

Maybe I gave the wrong impression. He's not 'off the grid'. He still has cable TV, electric power, internet service, automobiles, etc. but is prepared to live without if it is no longer there. He has electric generators for short term outages and, for longer term, enough solar panels he can connect up to supply some power but not enough for his normal daily usage. He isn't really preparing for any specific collapse (like a zombie apocalypse, nuclear war, government collapse, etc.) more like prepared in case some necessity becomes unavailable for whatever reason he and his family will be able to get by comfortably. e.g. grocery stores close, no problem. No more gasoline, no problem. Value of the dollar collapses (like in Venezuela), no problem.

Posted this here because Brady is such a divisive topic.
