Ironically, the word you are struggling with is correctly spelled "paedophillia", and the first syllable is pronounced "Pee-", but most people now spell and pronounce it incorrectly, so that it is analogous to "pedometer", and appears to describe a love of feet.

Your actual point is correct though, despite your poor etymology; Those who constantly and consistently derail discussions of the rape and abuse of children with this trivia are transparently showing a worrying desire not to talk about the immorality of raping children, and no matter what words are used, that's not a reassuring desire.

The fact is that the fine details don't matter. A sixty year old wealthy man who procures a twenty year old homeless woman for sex is clearly a vile abuser, despite having broken no laws and harmed no children.

The law has to draw a line somewhere, but doing so is a compromise, and for every unfair criminalisation of a "Romeo and Juliet" romance, there is an equally unfair legalisation of an abusive relationship that just happens to be technically lawful.

Actually in my neighborhood, it's not just as bad a pedophilia, but the difference is small. Louisiana law makes distinctions base on the age of the victim(which for purposes of this discussion is always the younger person involved). S

Louisiana laws are based on Napoleonic Code, which in simple English means every crime has a legal definition, along with degrees of severity and the punishment for each degree. Aggravated rape is at one end of the spectrum and "Misdemeanor Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile" is a the the other. Every definition of degree contains the same qualification, "Lack of knowledge of the juvenile's age shall not be a defense."

From my perspective, the distinction matters because without a distinction to make, pedophiles wouldn't out themselves in pointing it out, and then it would be harder to spot them...

To a public discussion of crime and punishment? Not at all. To a therapist? These are different situations with different causes and best practices for treatment. For a keyboard warrior ephebophile? They're hoping you'll agree that their sins are less grievous and absolve them from what they have done or are thinking about doing.

I wrote "main source of news" initially, and changed the word -- very wrongly -- when I noted that the much-time-spending threads had nothing to do with news. I read a lot, but mostly 10- or 20-year old books (or older) so not "news."

I keep busy with games, puzzles, recreations, movies, exercise, unspecified excitements, etc. "Following the news" has little utility for me except as a (not particularly fun) recreation. I do form opinions about prudent savings investment but decisions are left to my kids.

I think there are threads discussing LLM incompetence. I asked simply "Where is Andrew Tate now?" (My fault: I could have hinted to ChatGPT about recent change of status.) Its incorrect) response began with "As of the latest reliable information in late 2025," and continued to "... Romania where they continue to live and must comply with judicial control."

Give it some credit. It closed its reply with "If you want the very latest news about his legal status or location (e.g., recent court dates or travel), I can look that up too."

I remember hearing him say that on Howard Stern. Even Stern was left speechless and fumbling for a moment and IIRC, he tried to get the conversation on a different track. Stern has a long history of Anything Goes on his show, but that crossed a line even for him.

When Trump ran in 2016 I thought this would come out and immediately send him packing. But it didn't. Prior to then it would've prevented anyone from becoming a candidate. The GOP simply wouldn't have allowed him to get within a hundred miles of their headquarters. Even tiny third parties would've laughed him out of the building.

Then the fraudulent Trump University issue came out just a few months before the election. Then the pussy grabber thing. There were dozens of slimy things that came out but nothing mattered.

Just like the death of a loved one reveals the character of the bereaved, 9/11 revealed the character of half this nation. It's disgraceful.

Ugh. It's an unseemly topic, but I do think it's important to make the distinction because the psychological effects can be very different, and therefore treatment is different. Neither crime is defensible, but to lump them in together does a disservice to the victims. For example pre-pubescent rape doesn't result in pregnancy while post-pubescent rape can result in pregnancy, which creates egregious issues in states that want to ban all abortions no matter the circumstances.

I may be sensitive to this issue, and I won't go into detail, but this happened to one of my own kids. We didn't know about it until years later and the tragedy continues to this day for her, me, her mother, and her siblings. It's a type of devastation that seems to have no end.
