Yup, they're being naughty.

Consensual sex in the workplace I'm fine with. Jacking off on somebody else's desk isn't acceptable, though.

SeniornAustralian Government staff go on a sex-fueled tear through the Parliament house! Read all about it!

Apparently one of them was in there jacking off on a female MP's desk, too. Maybe someone with context can fill in the significance of any of this for us?

An MP's staffer has laid a report of rape against another staffer. Since then all these other incidents are going to light and the Australian Parliament is being forced to recognise that it is not a safe work place. Things must change.

So, on the 15th of February this year, a former political staffer publicly alleged she was drugged and raped in 2019. The investigation into the incident was handled poorly, to say the least. First off, Defence Minister Linda Reynolds confirmed she knew about the allegations for two years and never felt the need to inform the Prime Minister. Also, a meeting about the accusation occurred between Senator Payne and the political staffer happened a few days after. Apparently, the only place they could hold this meeting was in the room where Ms Higgins was allegedly raped. Then it was revealed Payne dismissed Higgins allegations and described her as a lying cow. Linda Reynolds has since taken a leave of absence from Parliament citing, "medical reasons" and hasn't returned to work.

Since then another allegation of rape has been brought to light, this time regarding Attorney-General Christian Porter. This one is a little murky as the incident allegedly occurred in 1988 and the woman in question committed suicide in 2020. There has also been an accusation of rape by a prominent Labor MP (the current opposition party in Australia), but no details have been forthcoming yet. Finally, a Federal staffer resigned after it was discovered he was insulting Tasmanian Greens leader Cassy O’Connor.

Basically, because all these incident were reported by the media in very quick succession, a spotlight is now on whether or not women can feel safe in Parliament. Finally, today Scott Morrison had a press conference and when asked by a Sky News journalist (and I'm using that term rather loosely here) whether or not the Prime Minister has lost control of his staff, he decided to engage in whataboutism and point out NewsCorp has issues as well, as if that is remotely fucking relevant.

Anyways, wiki already has page about all this:

ETA: Patooka beat me to it, so this post is pretty much redundant.

For bit more context:

The deputy prime minister had an affair with a staffer, which came to light in 2018 after he got her pregnant and his wife kicked him out. (Yes, he also campaigns on "family values".) This led Turnbull, the (now former) PM to introduce a ban on sexual relations between MPs and their staff, known as the "bonk ban". The staffer was given a high-paying, do-nothing job in another minister's office. This was the public's first insight into the fact that people were screwing around in minister's offices.

In 2021 another cabinet minister's staffer laid a report of rape against another staffer, which the minister, Reynolds, then tried to suppress. There is a rumour that the government paid the victim hush money. Reynolds has also been forced to publicly apologise for calling the victim a "lying cow". PM Morrison claimed to have no knowledge of the accusation, which is almost certainly a lie, and attempted to throw Reynolds under the bus by claiming she never told him about it. Morrison also claimed that he only decided to launch an investigation into the rape after his wife told him to imagine that his daughter was the victim.

A woman recently accused the now Attorney General of raping her in 1988. While the case is virtually impossible to investigate, since the woman also committed suicide, the government's response to the accusation has been bizarre. Morrison claimed to have referred the case to the AFP and claimed that they were handling it, despite the fact that the case doesn't fall within their jurisdiction. (It should have been referred to the state police.) The PM declared the matter settled after he had a chat with the AG, who said he didn't do it. Morrison did not even read the account sent to him by the now-dead accuser.

This latest bit of news seems a bit silly in comparison, but as part of the bigger picture, it is more evidence that parliament and ministerial offices are not a safe place for women to work. Male ministers think its OK to pursue sexual relations with staffer despite the power imbalance; both male and female MPs will try to cover up a rape. Male staffers are playing a game where they masturbate on a female MP's desk and send the images to their friends, and routinely swap explicit photos of themselves.

This was not deliberate. The person who booked the room did not know it was the site of the alleged rape which had not been disclosed by Higgins at the time.

The rape allegation against the AG was refereed to the NSW police who too it as far as they could.

In response to the recent March 4 Justice protests, which called for the government to take action on sexual harassment in workplaces, Morrison tried to deflect the issue by pointing how how good it was that the protesters weren't shot.

"Not far from here, such marches, even now are being met with bullets, but not here in this country," Mr Morrison told Parliament. "This is a triumph of democracy when we see these things take place."

The comment is pretty awful by itself, but the underlying attitude is what matters: Morrison's habitual response is to dodge accountability.

The fuckwit should have stayed in Hawaii.

Morrison also expects us to believe that he was briefed about this harassment complaint at News, but for two years he wasn't briefed about an alleged rape that happened just down the hall from his office.

Yup, they're being naughty.

Consensual sex in the workplace I'm fine with. Jacking off on somebody else's desk isn't acceptable, though.

He did clean it up. Cum isn't magical. It goes away after cleaning.

I think it's troubling that this became a thing at all. It's a bit embarrassing, that's all. I don't think it's a big deal.

A little more light shed on the government's attitude towards sexual assault:

Sue Hickey, the Speaker of the house in Tasmania, on comments made by federal government Senator Eric Abetz.

“On Monday the first of March at the Hobart City Council Citizenship Ceremony, I casually asked the Hon. Senator Eric Abetz if the Minister allegedly accused of the alleged rape that occurred around 30 years ago was the Hon. Christian Porter MP.

“The Senator quickly responded that “yes it was the First Law Officer of the Nation, Christian Porter, but not to worry, the woman is dead and the law will protect him.”

“He then said “as for that Higgins girl, anybody so disgustingly drunk who would sleep with anybody could have slept with one of our spies and put the security of the nation at risk.”

Note that I have much trouble taking seriously the word of any Aust. politician on any topic these days.

It's very easy to declare that all politicians are untrustworthy, but that kind of lazy cynicism is the lowest possible intellectual bar that anyone might attempt to clear.

Yeah, absolutely NO issue with someone jacking off on your desk if they clean it up. It doesn't demonstrate profound disrespect AT ALL. I'm sure that he was very thorough in cleaning it up after so there's absolutely zero mess or concern about any transmitted viruses. I have no idea how she found out that he jacked off on her desk.

So, you would not mind if someone jizzed, pissed or shat on your desk or desk chair, as long as they cleaned it up afterwards?

I'm not particularly politically active but this got me spewing emails in every direction.

The idea that we are a wonderful democracy because we don't shoot women who express the view that there should be some changes made just beggars belief.

I see you are doing the "if we allow gay marriage we must also allow pedophilia" -rhetorical trick. Based on my statement there's no way you can infer that I'd be cool with pissing and shitting on my desk. Why did you even go there?

It's just an office wank. It's not a big deal. The guy had the a cosy little private time. He was alone. Nobody was hurt. Women do it to. Its not even a gender thing.

The guy who should be fired is the guy who made it public. That's a grade a fucking wanker. Who does that to someone else? If the woman who owns the desk hadn't found out, she wouldn't have been hurt. It's the guy who made it public who should be stoned by the press. I hate guys like that.

And they make it so easy for the punters to be lazy and cynical with their words, actions behaivour etc.
