Sessions: Jesus wants me to separate families at the border

OMG, the OP title aint kidding. They really are citing the Bible to support their actions. Jesus Tap-Dancin Keerist.
Okay, I see it now, "it's very Biblical to enforce the law.".... and you know, there's gotta be a positive spin to this, because now the Trump administration will support legal abortion. So we all get something out of it.

It wasn't just Sessions. On CNN I watched two on air anchors, Cuomo and Lemmon, quote the bible to support illegal immigration. Along with assorted guests.

So much for editorial objectivity. It was depressing to see this nonsense debate playing out on what claims to be objective and balanced news and compares itself to fox.

I don't see the issue - there have been many Christian s who deeply disagree with Session's white supremacism on biblical grounds, so when he uses Bible quotes to justify breaking up families, it's reasonable to use the Bible against him as well.

Also, "Separation of church and state" means exactly that - it's Sessions who is in the wrong here for using Christianity to cover his barbaric policies, editorialists are under no obligation to remain clear of religious statements.

The bickering over public policy using quotes from a disjointed set of books written over many centuries by unknown authors with no clear consistent morality is sheer lunacy. It shows why the founders wanted a firewall between religion and govt. There is a passage in the NT that says if you are a slave, be a good one. The inspired word of god?

Overarching rule by scripture is called a theocracy, as in Iran. Nothing can conflict with the Koran in policy and law.

The threat is not Iran, extremists, or North Korea. It is all this ridiculous religious nonsense mixed with politics.

Seeing Sessions was veto'ing Obama all the time, I don't see a consistent obedience by him regarding Romans 13.

Jesus wants me to separate families at the border

Waitaminit... Sessions say he gets his marching orders from Jesus, Cheato says he gets the same marching orders from Obama...
I guess they really never speak to each other, or they would have realized by now that Obama is Jesus.

Bear in mind, some of those families who have been separated are families that have applied for refugee status. They are legal immigrants who are going through the proper legal process.

This proves that conservatives and libertarians are lying when they say "I'm not racist! I'm just against illegal immigrants! I'm not against legal immigration at all!" If their arguments were even remotely genuine, then right now they would be screaming bloody murder about these separations that are happening to families that have applied or are applying for refugee status.

I thought he was one of those Hindu gods with multiple arms.

What "refugee" status? There is no war in Honduras or Nicaragua or Guatemala, and neither are they being persecuted based on race or religion. The "refugee" claim is just a ploy to get in and then not show up for the hearing. High crime rates in your city, domestic violence or even your factory being closed (actual reason given by a woman who was part of the migrant caravan) does not make one a legitimate refugee.

This proves that conservatives and libertarians are lying when they say "I'm not racist! I'm just against illegal immigrants! I'm not against legal immigration at all!" The economic migrants have learned that saying magic words like "asylum" and "refugee" can get them into the country. It's abuse of a rule that was well-intentioned. Obviousy we must work on closing that loophole or we will be on the receiving end of a flood of migrants all claiming "asylum" like what is happening in Europe. And we only have a podunk river instead of the Mediterranean to protect us.

The family should be kept together and then sent back together to their country of origin. It's not that difficult.
That would be good, but that's not what the critics of the policy want. They want all of them to be let in. Because you know, if you say you are a refugee you must be a refugee. Even if your country hasn't been in a war since the Soccer War in 1969 which lasted all of 4 days.

Second, many women people with children are applying for refugee status as they're fleeing violence. Sessions, being an obvious bigot, has no concern for this either.
Just fleeing violence is not sufficient to be a refugee. Just because you live in a high crime area or are a victim of domestic violence does not make you a refugee. Let's not dilute the term more than it already has been.

Third, this is actually not that difficult to deal with at least somewhat more humanely, which is what we were doing up until this white supremacist decided he wanted to toss out as many Hispanic people as he can. Sessions could simply, you know, not be a racist asshole.
What has been happening before is that people have been let in with a hearing date. Since most of them had claims that were bogus they simply went under and did not show up for the hearing. That was obviously a bad policy if you want to fight illegal immigration. Which I understand the Left doesn't want to fight. They like illegal immigration.

Fourth, that third is not to say that Obama was great on this issue either, to be clear.
Yes, he should have been harder on illegals.

You are focusing on the wrong aspect. It is wrong to separate children from the parents until the parents are convicted.
So, if a suspect has children they should never be jailed pending trial?

Moreover, it is wrong to separate children from parents when the parents are seeking refugee status or claiming asylum.
"Refugee" and "asylum" should not become magic words to get into US. What wars or persecution are these people fleeing from?

To my knowledge, no other country separates children from parents who are claiming asylum.
Again with the claiming asylum. It's very easy to claim asylum. And if we let it become a magic word, soon we will have the same problems Europe is having where half of Africa is trying to get on boats to claim "asylum" just because they hope they can have a better life in Europe.

He ends it with "If we let this happen in our name, we are a feckless country".
Actually if we let in people just because they say magic words "asylum" or "refugee" we will become a feckless country. And yes, I get his play on words.

And that exactly is the problem. There is no consistent morality anywhere in the NT and OT. People shoehorn an interpretation to fit a view or judgment. COTUS contains no reference to a god, and explicitly prohibits using govt to further specific religious views.

Sessions thankfully represents a type of political theist that is slowly passing into history.

One of the republican primary candidates said his budget would be biblically based, what on Earth can that mean?

The debate I watched on CNN with trading biblical passages was troubling. Our politics is corrupted by region adding to polarization.

I'd like to know if it as prevalent in British, Canadian, French, and German politics.

So, if a suspect has children they should never be jailed pending trial?
And the source of that straw man is...?

"Refugee" and "asylum" should not become magic words to get into US. What wars or persecution are these people fleeing from?
When someone claims asylum or refugee status, they are investigated. During the investigatory period, different countries deal with these applicants in different ways. Some put them in special camps or let them into the country at large with supervision. No country separates children from their parents except us.

A clear example of Christian family values, and another good reason to be an atheist.

I’ll at least give Franklin Graham and other evangelical leaders some credit for opposing this inanity.

So are illegal border crossers just supposed to be set free or what do you propose?

Follow the Bible, of course. Kill all the men and boys and any female not a virgin. The rest distribute amongst the CBP agents for their own pleasure. If we’re going to start using scripture to justify policy, might as well make it a damn good bible passage.

In reality, they're both following the Nazi wannabe Stephen Miller on this one (although it's very possible that our Jim Crow loving Attorney General helped him out). That guy's always let his racism far outpace whatever intelligence he has.

First, the policy: It helps to be incredibly clear on what the law is, and what has and has not changed. When Donald Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders say that the policy of separating children from their parents upon entry is a law passed by Democrats that Democrats will not fix, they are lying.

There are two different policies in play, and both are new.

First is the new policy that any migrant family entering the U.S. without a border inspection will be prosecuted for this minor misdemeanor. The parents get incarcerated and that leaves children to be warehoused. The parents then typically plead guilty to the misdemeanor and are given a sentence of the few days they served waiting for trial. But then when the parents try to reunite with their children, they are given the runaround—and possibly even deported, alone. The children are left in HHS custody, often without family.
bolding mine

Second is a new and apparently unwritten policy that even when the family presents themselves at a border-entry location, seeking asylum—that is, even when the family is complying in all respects with immigration law—the government is snatching the children away from their parents. Here, the government’s excuse seems to be that they want to keep the parents in jaillike immigration detention for a long time, while their asylum cases are adjudicated. The long-standing civil rights case known as Flores dictates that they aren’t allowed to keep kids in that kind of detention, so the Trump administration says they have to break up the families. They do not have to break up families—it is the government’s new choice to jail people with credible asylum claims who haven’t violated any laws that is leading to the heartbreaking separations you’ve been reading about.

Sorry, the term I should have used is asylum.

Some of those families are going through the legal process of applying for asylum. They are not "illegals." They are going through the proper process.

The fact that you are not up in arms about the fact that this is being done to legal immigrants severely undermines your previous arguments that this is "about legal vs illegal immigration, and therefore not about racism."

This is not about your "concern" for legal immigration. This was never about your "concern" for legal vs illegal immigration. No one ever fell for that except for your fellow fascists alt-right free speech warriors.

So, as an atheist, you're completely at ease with government officials quoting scriptures to support a policy which you also support. So you would pay lip service, at best, to separation of church and state.

That is the trumpsucking genius. They come out with the flamebait line cherry-picked from the bible, and CNN rises to the bait. Now the trumpsuckers can say "look! Those hypocrites are doing the same thing!"
God, how I wish the mainstream media would 100% IGNORE Trump.
