The Force Awakens.

I think this new lightsabor is gonna ruin it for me. I don't know if I can be motivated to go to the theater. Are the torrent files up yet? When will netflix have it?

JJ Abrahms is a little too bling bling for my tastes and his action scenes are over the top.

OK,that is just stupid. A lightsaber designed by someone who doesn't know what a crossguard is supposed to do.

This remarkable sword was designed by the Sith lord Trollus Maximus to annoy opponents with its illogical design. Many Jedi have fallen to the dark side because of their annoyance at the masterfully crafted weapon.

Jedis need to kill those fools.

Also, Apple spellcheck changes Jedis to Jesus. That's appropriate.
The plural for Jedi should be unchanged. The name and concept of them is based on Japanese influenced warriors like Samurai. Japanese doesn't differentiate plural and singular words.

That's not exactly correct. There are some Japanese words that have plural and singular versions; and there are suffixes that make words plural. In Japanese, the plural of Jedi would be Jedi-tachi.

The teaser doesn't tell us diddly, but I'm confident JJ Abrams will do a good job. He's right for Star Wars for all the same reasons he was wrong for Star Trek.
What's everybody beef with his Star Trek? I found Into Darkness wasn't a bad movie.
(at the same time, it was one of the first Star Trek I ever watched while I'm a Star Wars fanboy, so that might support your opinion)
(or it's just my sci-fi tastes tend to be at odd with the majority, e.g. I liked Alien Resurection)

To me, what makes Star Trek Star Trek is contemplation. As awful as the first movie was, at least you walked away from it imagining all the things that might happen if Voyager is ever picked up by an alien species. In Star Wars, ideas are used to support the story and/or setting, whereas in Star Trek, the story is used as a vehicle to communicate ideas. Star Wars does action very, very well, while Star Trek can be a bit too slow-paced to make you feel like you're on a roller-coaster thrill ride. One movie critic who defended the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie put it this way: "Star Trek is slow and smart, Star Wars is fast and dumb."

Star Wars tends to stay tightly focused on a relatively simple and familiar story, which in part is why it's a better vehicle for action, while Star Trek tends to clutter things up with metaphors and whatnot.

I like them both, but I like them for different reasons.

If you watch the bonus material on the DVD/Blu-Ray for the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, you'll see that both Abrams and the movie studio made a conscious effort to emulate Star Wars. This did indeed make for a much more thrilling movie, but didn't offer any big ideas beyond "Kirk and Spock are awesome. And they're friends." The second JJ Abrams Star Trek movie actually gave us a few ideas to chew on and was even fairly successful at "fast and smart" (to use the above-mentioned movie critic's terminology) but it still felt a bit Star Wars-ish to me.

Exactly why I hated the 1st Star Trek movie. It was not a Star Trek movie which were always morality tales.

You can tell JJ tried to rope in the Star Wars kids by making Star Trek like Star Wars.

It didn't work for me as a Star Trek movie. All of the characters were intolerable and unlikeable.

Since I disliked the first movie so much, I had no intention of watching Star Trek into Darkness until I saw Benedict Cumberbatch was going to be the villain. He's the only reason I went to go see it and the movie turned out to be more "Star Trek-y" with all the sticky ethical and moral issues and actually good.

JJ himself said he 'never understood' Star Trek, and that was obvious, so though he gave it a good shot with his last movie, hopefully someone who does understand Trek will now take over.

OK,that is just stupid. A lightsaber designed by someone who doesn't know what a crossguard is supposed to do.
How is that a worse design than no crossguard at all, like all the other lightsabers? Besides if the Jedi were practical, they'd be using guns instead of swords.

Supposedly, the lightsabers are also used to "channel" the Force (whatever that means), so presumably they also function a bit like a sorcerer's wand. There are Jedi who use blasters (for a variety of reasons), but they are extremely rare.

A cross guard might be nice to have on a light saber, if only the point where the guard meets the blade weren't the only vulnerable part. Dumbass sith.

What makes you think it's vulnerable? Teh movie will show but I suspect that if there is a scene where another light saber hits the cross guard, that part is going to be unscathed.

It's magic!

Exactly. Dumbass Jedi.

And even if they don't like guns, why not make light sabers that have infinite or variable range:

Much more useful than a fixed-length stick.

The disk the laser shoots out of actually acts like a small guard. Apparently this is all the Jedi need

Lightsaber trumps blaster in the Star Wars universe.

And a crossguard that can be cut off (by hitting the metal part of the crossguard with another lightsaber) is not a useful crossguard. Unless of course it is made of some material that cannot be cut by a lightsaber.

One thing that's always bothered me about Star Wars, why bother using weapons at all? Why not just use the force?

That's the problem with magic. It's too powerful for a good story.

The same problem arises with religion - why bother with all the hard yards when prayer can achieve anything?

So the narrative either has to gloss over the failure to use whatever magic the fiction describes, or worse, try to provide ad-hoc 'reasons' why it won't always work.

"Hey boss? There's a couple of guys out here. They are part of an esoteric, self-regulating, quasi-religious group, are capable of super human and supernatural feats, telekinesis and mind control. They say they're here to negotiate."

Apologies for upping such an old thread - and mine to boot. But it seems to fit well enough.

The latest trailer and the main poster have arrived. Plus tickets are available.

Odd trailer. Seems like it fits a generic type of action film. At least at first.

Thanks.

The trailer follows the typical formula for action films, but that doesn't say as much about the film as it does about the specialists who compose the trailers.
