The Thread For New Republican Legislation

Biden would be better off just letting the credit rating drop. He gains just about nothing in this "deal". And the GOP is still pushing FURTHER to the right to get the votes. The GOP is insane! They up'd the ceiling three times when the deficits were through the roof under Trump (and a couple times under W, after ensuring America there would be surpluses?).
Or go with the trillion-dollar coin approach.

But tell the Republicans that until the press reports that the Republicans have made a reasonable offer that all communications will be ignored.

GOP lawyer Cleta Mitchell decries ease of ‘campus voting’ in private RNC pitch - The Washington Post - "A presentation by Cleta Mitchell at a donor retreat urged tougher rules that could make it harder for college students to cast ballots"

What a sore loser.

A top Republican legal strategist told a roomful of GOP donors over the weekend that conservatives must band together to limit voting on college campuses, same-day voter registration and automatic mailing of ballots to registered voters, according to a copy of her presentation reviewed by The Washington Post.

Cleta Mitchell, a longtime GOP lawyer and fundraiser who worked closely with former president Donald Trump to try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, gave the presentation at a Republican National Committee donor retreat in Nashville on Saturday.

Texass to require 10 Commandments be posted in all public schools along school supported prayers.

Both are unconstitutional but of course who knows with the current MAGA supreme court.

The MAGA Ten Commandments (seen elsewhere)

I: Thou shalt be armed

II: Thou shalt not allow foreigners to enter thy lands, except if their skin be as thine own

III: Thou shalt not tolerate any who chose mates of their own gender, nor those who question their gender, nor those who dress not in the manner of their gender

IV: Thou shalt not protect the animals of the forest, nor the forest itself, nor the sea, nor the sky

V: Thou shalt not allow a voice in governing to those whose skin is not as thine own, nor to those who dress differently, nor to those whose beliefs do not comport with thine own

VI: Thou shalt not acknowledge mistreatment of those whose skin is not as thine own, nor of those who dress differently, nor of those whose beliefs do not comport with thine own

VII: Thou shalt not tell thy children of the sins of thy forebears, nor allow them to read of such, nor allow them to read books that do not comport with thine own beliefs

VIII: Thou shalt not take precautions against the spread of illness

IX: Thou shalt not teach thy children how to avoid pregnancy, nor allow them to end such

X: Thou shalt not give credence to those who investigate thy leaders, but shall give credence to any who malign their opponents, even if their accusations be obviously false

So the justification is schools need to provide access to religion because there just isn't enough at home and church?

They are justifying the creation of an untrained therapist, but it is okay because Jesus.

An untrained theocratic therapist. And because they explicitly rejected equal access for non-christian faiths, it will fail in court as soon as TST steps up to bat.

God will guide them to say the right things.

They are saying the quiet part out loud now....

When they tell you what they believe, pay attention. This is actually what the MAGA crowd is after; they want to eliminate the voice of voters and just be able to run things by fiat. They don't care what the voting population wants at all.

Not legislation but still batshit crazy.

Well the logic can be sound but the premise can be false. If you believe that elections are fraudulent and pre-rigged then indeed it doesn’t make sense to have them as they’d only be for show. This does indeed happen in some dictatorships, yes?

House conservatives block GOP bills, voice frustration in response to last week's debt ceiling vote | AP News
Led by outspoken members of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of 11 Republicans broke with their party on an otherwise routine procedural vote that threw the day’s schedule — and the rest of the week — into disarray. It’s the first such procedural rule vote to fail in nearly two decades.

The debt-ceiling bill was H.R.3746 - 118th Congress (2023-2024): Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

It was preceded by Actions - H.Res.456 - 118th Congress (2023-2024): Providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 3746) to provide for a responsible increase to the debt ceiling. | Congress.gov | Library of Congress a routine kind of procedural resolution, for advancing the debt-ceiling bill to a floor vote.

That failed vote was on a similar procedural resolution: H.Res.463 - 118th Congress (2023-2024): Providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 277) to amend chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, to provide that major rules of the executive branch shall have no force or effect unless a joint resolution of approval is enacted into law; providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 288) to amend title 5, United States Code, to clarify the nature of judicial review of agency interpretations of statutory and regulatory provisions; providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 1615) to prohibit the use of Federal funds to ban gas stoves; and providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 1640) to prohibit the Secretary of Energy from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing the proposed rule titled "Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Conventional Cooking Products", and for other purposes. | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

For advancing these bills to a floor vote:

Roll Call 248 | Bill Number: H. Res. 463 | Jun 06, 2023, 02:48 PM | 118th Congress, 1st Session | Vote Question: On Agreeing to the Resolution

Vote:
D: N 208, nv 4
R: Y 206, N 12, nv 4
Ttl: Y 206, N 220, nv 8

The Republican No votes were from Biggs AZ, Bishop NC, Boebert CO, Buck CO, Burchett TN, Crane AZ, Gaetz FL, Good VA, Norman SC, Rosendale MT, Roy TX, Scalise LA

One would expect the likes of Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz to *love* a chance to vote on those gas-stove bills, but they voted against consideration of those bills. Some like-minded Reps, however, voted for the resolution, like MTG and Paul Gosar; MTG was pro-KMC and LB, MG, and PG anti-KMC in  2023 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives election

Back to the AP article.
The group is among some of the same conservative Republicans who tried to stop the debt ceiling bill from advancing last week and who then threatened to try to oust McCarthy after passage of the debt ceiling package that President Joe Biden signed into law. Short of taking that step, they have demanded a meeting with McCarthy, leaving it unclear how the standoff will be resolved.

“We’re frustrated with the way this place is operating,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., one of the more outspoken members of the group. “We’re not going to live in the era of the imperial speaker anymore.”

It seems they may not fully comprehend the implications of their requests. They converse with such conviction, likely rooted in the assumption that the majority of Americans align with their perspective. While their influence might extend to creating disruptions and soliciting assistance from external entities, the aftermath will not mirror the post-Civil War era. There won't be a return to old ways, akin to some simply retreating to their farms and resuming former practices.

Ya think? Tubby has worked his entire life with brain damaged, meatheaded football jocks. It would be foolish to assume that his views of Americans in general don’t fall into the same mold.

Fifteen years in to this madness, and I'm still not used to hearing things like that from sitting senators and representatives.
