Low-paying jobs are low-paying jobs for a reason: because people show up and are willing to work for that price.
"Willing"? How do you equate "willing" with "do it or die, because you have no alternatives/options"? Are you under the impression that people who work at Walmart, for example,
chose to work there over the dozens of other alternative places they could have worked instead? That, as children, they said, "Boy, I can't wait to grow up and work a shitty retail job, barely scraping by on poverty wages with no job security, future or basic benefits"?
Let me try to explain this again.
If Walmart advertises for $10 an hour and people show up willing to work for it, then you have a price that people are willing to work for. If nobody showed up to $10 an hour, then Walmart would be forced to change it to $11 an hour and see if anybody shows up. If nobody still shows up, they would change it to $12 an hour. If nobody shows up, they would change it to $13 an hour. They would keep doing this until people show up willing to work for the price that they say.
It's not "Do it or starve!" If Walmart sets up $10 an hour and millions of people flock to the store to apply, Walmart says "Well that was easy." If people just didn't show up for the low wages, then wages all across the U.S. would rise because companies wouldn't be able to get people willing to do the job for low pay.
Blame the people. It's all in their hands. This is very simple economics.
