Trump VS COVID-19 Threat

There's little chance of a vaccine this year, the testing takes too long.
I have to ask: is this caution necessary? Vaccines could be available on an experimental basis to anyone with a strong risk of the disease. They would be available much quicker, though at much greater risk.

An ineffective vaccine is worse than no vaccine.
Yeah, the whole point is finding a cure... What good is finding an occasional cure and producing, distributing it as the cure?

Exactly what would you expect the Trump to do! A Moses like act of holding up his staff and parting the sea and stop COVID-19 in it's tracks? The Trumpet is doing exactly what most other world governments are doing and spending trillions of dollars to keep the country from complete collapse, similar as the Australian government is doing. Giving the most vulnerable people $750 payment to start with. A second stimulus payment later, Guaranteeing a $1500 payment per fortnight to small and medium companies for up to 2-3 million, perhaps more employees. Among a rush of other stimuli to try and salvage the economy. in Australia's case costing upwards of 380 billion AUD. for a total population of just under 25 million in comparison to 3+ trillion USD for 330 million Americans. The Trump has already announced much more, or whatever it takes to save America going down the gurgler. A semi senile Biden, or an outright loony Sanders lack the steel balls needed in this crisis in my opinion and the opinion of most Americans it seems by the Trump's latest approval rating.

We should have been rushing to build up testing capability, not throwing roadblocks in the way of developing it. Contact tracing up the wazoo, rather than the current situation where tests are being reserved for hospitals because there aren't enough to go around.

It's only been very recently that His Flatulence has started to take this at all seriously, despite the fact that the right wing knew it was going to be serious for much longer. It appears like a deliberate strategy to sacrifice granny for the economy and present it as a fait acompli.

Just because plenty of other world leaders took the same approach doesn't make it not vile.

Pelosi on Trump's coronavirus response: 'As the President fiddles, people are dying' - CNNPolitics
As US cases surge, Pelosi questioned when Trump was informed about the coronavirus and his knowledge on its potential impact. "I don't know what the scientists said to him, when did this President know about this, and what did he know? What did he know and when did he know it? That's for an after-action review. But as the President fiddles, people are dying. And we just have to take every precaution."

Asked by Tapper if she believes Trump's downplaying of the crisis has cost American lives, Pelosi responded, "Yes, I am. I'm saying that."

"Because when he made the other day when he was signing the bill, he said just think 20 days ago everything was great. No, everything wasn't great," she said. "We had nearly 500 cases and 17 deaths already. And in that 20 days because we weren't prepared, we now have 2,000 deaths and 100,000 cases."

...
When asked about Trump suggesting he wants to relax social distancing guidelines in parts of the country, Pelosi said, "His delaying of getting equipment to where it -- it continues his delay in getting equipment to where it's needed, is deadly. And now I think the best thing would be to do is to prevent more loss of life rather than open things up, because we just don't know."

I heard from an Italian friend yesterday who tells me that there are 1000 deaths/day in Italy now.

The term is preventative action. Trump closed off travel by the Chinese early and otherwise mocked concern about the pandemic because he thought it was all about him. Now we are stuck with a considerable amount of isolation time and an even more desperate race for a vaccine.

He didn't close off travel by the Chinese, only put a few roadblocks in the way--and too late to do any good, anyway. He does not appear to have done anything of any value. Even ordering GM to make ventilators is worthless--they agreed, here's what it's going to cost--and His Flatulence backed off in the hope of getting a better deal.

I watched AOC on a Facebook Live event hosted by Make The Road New York, mostly about the virus, but a bit about the census. She was on the phone with some NY State officials to try to get a rent moratorium to go along with the state's mortgage moratorium. She also knew about the virus for some weeks before it became a big issue, and she challenged ICE about what to do about it. No answer. She also proposed letting out some jailed people who were not jailed for violent offenses. Especially jailed in preparation for a trial, when they have not officially been found guilty of anything.

In closing, she wanted to assure everybody that you are not alone.

Exclusive: The Military Knew Years Ago That a Coronavirus Was Coming

Despite President Trump’s repeated assertions that the Covid-19 epidemic was “unforeseen” and “came out of nowhere,” the Pentagon was well aware of not just the threat of a novel influenza, but even anticipated the consequent scarcity of ventilators, face masks, and hospital beds, according to a 2017 Pentagon plan obtained by The Nation.

“The most likely and significant threat is a novel respiratory disease, particularly a novel influenza disease,” the military plan states. Covid-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel (meaning new to humans) coronavirus. The document specifically references coronavirus on several occasions, in one instant saying, “Coronavirus infections [are] common around the world.”

The Trump administration is ill-prepared for a global pandemic - The Washington Post - April 8, 2017 at 3:11 p.m. PDT - look at the dateline on that one
The Trump administration has failed to fill crucial public health positions across the government, leaving the nation ill-prepared to face one of its greatest potential threats: a pandemic outbreak of a deadly infectious disease, according to experts in health and national security.

...
But after 11 weeks in office, the Trump administration has filled few of the senior positions critical to responding to an outbreak. There is no permanent director at the CDC or at the U.S. Agency for International Development. At the Department of Health and Human Services, no one has been named to fill sub-Cabinet posts for health, global affairs, or preparedness and response. It's also unclear whether the National Security Council will assume the same leadership on the issue as it did under President Barack Obama, according to public health experts.

...
In addition to leaving key posts vacant, the Trump administration has displayed little interest in the issue, health and security experts say. The White House has made few public statements about the importance of preparing for outbreaks, and it has yet to build the international relationships that are crucial for responding to global health crises. Trump also has proposed sharp cuts to government agencies working to stop deadly outbreaks at their source.

...
Global health experts warn that a pandemic threat could be as deadly as a nuclear attack — and is much more probable.

...
“Imagine if I told you that somewhere in this world, there’s a weapon that exists — or that could emerge — capable of killing tens of thousands, or millions of people, bringing economies to a standstill and throwing nations into chaos,” said Gates, who has spent billions to improve health worldwide.

“Whether it occurs by a quirk of nature or at the hand of a terrorist, epidemiologists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year.”
This is major negligence, and Rep. Adam Schiff is now proposing something like the 9/11 Commission to find out what made it happen.
Of all emerging infectious disease threats, a global influenza outbreak is everyone's worst fear because it could be highly lethal and highly contagious. A particularly virulent influenza pandemic that started in 1918 killed an estimated 50 million people. Today's H7N9 strain poses the greatest risk of a pandemic if it evolves to spread easily from human to human, according to U.S. officials.
This warning was very prescient, because COVID-19 is a flu-like disease, caused by a virus that is closely related to common-cold and flu viruses.
Global health security was a top priority for the Obama administration, which launched a partnership in early 2014 to prevent deadly outbreaks from spreading. Experts say the collaboration, known as the Global Health Security Agenda, has raised the political profile of infectious disease threats and strengthened basic public health systems in the countries least equipped to fight epidemics.

...
President Obama also brought up global health regularly in meetings with foreign leaders. Trump has said little since taking office, except for a reference in his inaugural speech about his desire to rid the earth of disease.
Could this negligence be the result of Trump wanting to be an anti-Obama, opposed to everything that Obama supported?

That seems plausible to me, given his germaphobia. I find it perplexing that he doesn't act scared to death of the COVID-19 virus.

Death on this scale cannot be spun - The Washington Post
Trump warned that the next two weeks will be “very, very painful.” (Why two weeks? Won’t deaths continue as the virus rolls through one metropolitan area after another?) ...

Trump used to say no one could have predicted the coronavirus. Now, the right-wing talking point is that impeachment, which ended the at beginning of February, kept him too distracted. So it was knowable, but Trump did not know it?

That does not match Trump’s earlier statements and numerous media accounts that senior advisers warned of the impending threat. The Post reports that fails to “take into account the president’s own words and actions related to the coronavirus.”

...
But, as he so often does, Trump blew up the spin from his own allies.

...
Try as he might to now prepare the country and figure out an excuse for massive casualties potentially on a scale not seen since World War II, Trump’s own statements and failure to take action cannot be entirely erased from memory.

...
One reason the president freaks out whenever a reporter quotes Trump back to Trump is that the record is littered with statements from him (and his right-wing sycophants) downplaying the danger of covid-19 and characterizing the pandemic as a figment of the anti-Trump media’s imagination. The gap between Trump’s words just a week or so ago and the horrible reality about to confront the country is unspinnable.
He also cannot deny that he dismissed concern about COVID-19 as the Democrats' "new hoax" for unseating him. Also his stating that the virus will quickly go away.

Future generations will not look upon him very kindly. He will more likely be remembered as like Neville Chamberlain than like Winston Churchill.

That's their job, isn't it?

Absolutely. I'm saying it is disingenuous to say the military knew about this particular outbreak as if they were Nostradamus. I'm sure at the same time there was discussion on the possibility of the Yemen civil war spilling over to the entire Middle East, traditional allies like Australia being compromised by China's expansionist policies and an increase of left wing extremism as a reaction to Trump being inaugurated as President. All of those scenarios were likely in the context of 2017.

What would be more accurate to say is the Military had a plan for exactly this type of scenario and Trump decided to ignore it because, typically, the dumb cunt thinks he is the smartest guy in the room.

A lot of bad things got into the rescue package. Here’s a list. - The Washington Post
While the economic rescue package was being negotiated in Congress, Republicans pulled out a time-tested strategy: Find a frivolous-sounding provision your opponents put in their proposal, then have everyone bring it up over and over to make it look like they’re being unreasonable.

In this case it was $25 million in funding for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; any regular viewer of Fox News would have seen the Kennedy Center mentioned a dozen times.
Then mentioning a long list of things that the Republicans got into that bill, including:
  • A windfall for real estate investors allowing them “to use losses generated by real estate to minimize their taxes on profits from things like investments in the stock market. The estimated cost of the change over 10 years is $170 billion,” according to the New York Times.
  • $17 billion in loans for “businesses critical to maintaining national security,” a provision seemingly targeted solely at Boeing.
  • $25 billion in grants and $25 billion in loans for the airline industry.

To be fair, US officials and the CDC, NIH, US Surgeon General, US military, and other governmental and quasi-governmental bodies in the public health arena have really only been aware that a pandemic strain of respiratory virus is a highly plausible and likely major threat to the US and her citizens for about a century.

Not only has every health organisation in the US (and indeed the world) had a respiratory viral pandemic originating in China as their most major concern for at least a hundred years, but this concern has also been a popular theme in fictional entertainment media, including film, TV, novels, and many other formats.

So for this to take the current POTUS and administration by surprise required a truly epic lack of payment of attention on their part.

This is failure in an astounding scale, and that the President is pretending otherwise is merely compounding that failure.

This is why you cannot allow an incompetent and uncaring buffoon to take up the US Presidency. This is the price - tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of American lives - you pay for doing so.

Turkmenistan will reportedly arrest you for saying the word "coronavirus" - CBS News
As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases nears 900,000 worldwide, one Central Asian country claims it doesn't have a single positive diagnosis. And while Turkmenistan has reportedly attacked and tortured whistleblowers for years, police are now apparently arresting anyone who even says the word "coronavirus" in public.

...
The Turkmenistan Chronicles, which RSF calls "one of the few sources of independent news, whose site is blocked within the country," said the word can no longer be found in health brochures given to schools, hospitals and workplaces. Heavily restricted state media are avoiding reports about the virus, depriving citizens of access to information on the growing pandemic.

President Trump is 100 percent correct: the MSM is the enemy of the people.
