Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Trainspotting 2, 10/10; "It had better not be shite" director Danny Boyle was warned many times as he took on the sequel to 1996 Trainspotting. And it wasn't. All the main characters return played by the original cast. What makes this film so good is that it must have been incredibly difficult for it not to have been shite. Yeah there were a couple of flaws and flat bits but over all this movie delivered and then some. Trainspotting 2 will only appeal to people that have read Irvine Welsh books and seen Trainspotting. T2 picks up 20 years after Trainspotting as middle aged Renton, in the midst of a mid life crisis returns to Edinburgh after his self inflicted exile to Amsterdam. A very dangerous proposition as he was the one who absconded with the 20k pounds received from a dodgy drug deal and has no idea if there can be a reconciliation with his former friends who he stiffed. Very entertaining, very clever and visually brilliant at times.

Beauty and the Beast - 8/10

I was really shocked by how much I liked this movie. I expected it to be a cheesy retelling of the cartoon and went in with exceedingly low expectations, but found myself amazed by how good it was. They managed to capture the magic which should go into a fairy tale movie and just did an excellent job with it.

A Dogs Purpose 7/10, cheesier than I thought, but good ending, different take on hero-like chara meets normal human. ;P

Now watching Beauty and the Beast from cam recording, and actually like that they seem to change nothing aside from making it live action. I think the time the French did their live action is far closer to the old fairytale and rather well one too, but the music and growing friendship were far less appealing to watch, so that one was meh. I like this version more, even if everyone has Brit accents.

Finished Beauty and the Beast 7/10, loved the acting, and that it seemed to work well as a live action despite it being in my opinion the hardest of Disney's tales to do that with. I felt the last 3rdof it was kinda rushed, which is od since it is a bit longer than Disney's foray. Oddly, I loved that it stayed a musical and liked the little changes to the scenery and costuming.

I think I'd definitely re-watch it at some point soon.

mad max fury road is a love story between that anemic war boy and that pretty girl

Great show

All of the films below were watched with Rifftrax.

No Retreat, No Surrender - A martial art film from the 80s. Oddly enough, this didn't involve weird possesses or eccentric teaching. The film suffers from uncontrolled 80s cheese. The Riff is pretty good. 3 of 4

Nightmare at Noon -
An awesome riffing experience. This film stars the Iceman from Another 48 Hours (though he never speaks) and George Kennedy. One of the best lines was Kennedy's character saying "Something's wrong." Kevin Murphy interjects, "I used to star in movies with Paul Newman." The film is crap, but watchable crap and riff just runs through it very well. 4 of 4

Fever Lake - Want to watch a direct to VHS camp slash flick starting Corey Haim and Mario Lopez? No? What if I say they also have some hottie college girls (aged 35 to 45?)? No? Okay, but what if I tell you that almost none of the violence is ever actually shown because the director was trying to surprise the audience from not knowing what was pretty obvious 10 minutes into the film? Fine. Last try, how about if I tell you there is an old laptop with like a 3" screen in the film? Oh forget it you movie snob!

3 of 4

ROTOR - Nothing says "awesome movie" more than a blatant cheap ripoff of a more successful film. In this case Robocop. The funny thing about this film is that they have this robot that makes the robot in Lost in Space look like Robocop, but then we are supposed to believe they can create a human cyborg with unbelievable abilities... and I mean unbelievable. And the ending... WTF?! The riff on this was perfect. The movie is bad, but watchable. 3.5 of 4

The Tourist Trap -
Wanna see Chuck Connors in a film, because really that is that this film has to offer... well that and a little bit of commentary about thruways, but you can get similar commentary in the film Cars. It is a horror film about college aged kids that well, have to deal with issues of being in a horror film. The one trouble with the film is that you pretty much feel like "Well, you had that coming dumb ass, so I don't feel bad about it." The riff is pretty good on this film. 3 of 4

Zindy the Swamp Boy -
So anyway, Zindy is a boy that lives with his Grandfather and a monkey, in the swamp. Yeah, in the swamp... with a monkey. This film actually tries to be a movie and pulls it off decently, but it isn't that good of a movie. It then ends quite abruptly and leaves you wondering, what was the point of ending like that?! 3.5 of 4

Night of the Yellow Beast -
I couldn't get through this film. The riff was decent, but the film was just too bad and not going anywhere. 1 of 4

Yambao -
Same as above. 1 of 4

Stone Cold -
Alright! A film with flash in the pan football star Brian Bosworth. This film actually has a couple actors you'll recognize, but the film is definitely B-list material. The riff is decent, but the film is really silly and hard to recover from. 2 of 4

Icebreaker - Awesome skiing film starring Sean Astin and Bruce Campbell. This takes place at a Vermont ski resort (Killington) and involves an attempt to recover some dangerous stolen weapons material. The film suffers a bit from having a pretty weak script, but is watchable. 3 of 4

The Devil's Hands - A decent film costarring the commissioner from Batman. It is about a cult that a guy kind of just falls into. Things just happen and the word cliche comes to mind. The riff helps carry the film deep into the night. 3.5 of 4

Wonder Women -
Please notice the plural. This film must have been written and produced under the influence of some sort of drug. It is nonsensical and doesn't go anywhere. I couldn't finish the film, despite a decent, but not great riff. 1 of 4

Abraxas -
Jesse Ventura reminds us why Arnold and not Jesse became a Hollywood icon. A remix of Terminator of sorts. A great riff of a poorly made action film. 3.5 of 4

Gonna go see it because of your review...:)

All of the films below were watched with Rifftrax.

Gearing up for the new season of MST3K?

I have seen a few of the movies on your list, with Rifftrax of course, and actually remember watching Stone Cold when it came out on VHS. Of those I have seen with Rifftrax, ROTOR and Abraxas are the best of the bunch. I will have to get ahold of Nightmare at Noon, given your rating, and Zindy they Swamp Boy sounds like another one I would like.

Have you seen Samurai Cop with Rifftrax? It is a positively terrible film without the riffing, but is one of the better riffs I have seen recently. I am sure you are also aware that they will be live riffing it in a couple months.

A boatload of Rifftrax VODs are on Amazon Prime now! And yes... I did "watch" Catalina Caper over the weekend. Oh creepy girl!

Zindy at least seemed like a movie that was made by someone that had a decent idea, kind of, but almost no money.

Yes, I thought I may have already given that a review here, so didn't include it in the list. That movie was awful. It could be said to be a ripoff of a ripoff of Lethal Weapon. And the whole Samurai thing... umm... when was the Samurai fighting, somewhere between the Uzi bullets? It was a great riff though. I forget if this was the movie where the movie almost starts riffing itself. You probably already know, but they'll be live riffing that in April.

The Red Pill 8/10

I encourage you to watch this documentary and look up the criticism of it.

As presented by the film, statistics support abuse of men nearly on par with that of women but society does not. Why do we ignore this?

Because we suck when it comes to looking at reality for what's there? Of course abuse towards men happens as often, an usually with far deadlier consequences more often. That's why abusers abuse, really. Unless its only for control, in which case, aiming it at women more than men tends to "pay out" for the abusers more often, cuz women tend to utilize "hope" that someone will be looking for them, which is dumb, but hey, anything that shows the actual reality, stark and bleak as it sadly seems to constantly be is worth more of a look than some cutesy, watered down wish will ever be.

Without seeing the film, I recall that Paul Elam has previously published blog articles on AVFM where he cherry picks statistics to represent victimisation of men as being on par with that of women.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics did a nationwide survey a few years ago and found that while men are a significant proportion of victims (about 1 in 3), women suffered more frequent and more severe abuse. Once you factor that in, the focus on women's safety makes more sense. One could argue that some resources for men would be better than none, but the statistics support much greater spending of resources on the protection of women.

People who have tried to bring domestic violence against men issues into the spotlight are subject to ridicule, slander, protests and even death threats by feminists. Its dismissed and even treated in a rather comical fashion in today's pop culture. There was a story a few years back about a man who's penis was cut off by his wife and threw it in the garbage disposal and turned it on. The "ladies" hosting The View on TV, especially Sharon Osborne, as well as the audience thought it was freakin' hilarious and "fabulous".

Where did you see the movie? I've heard it was coming out on DVD/streaming, but hadn't heard a release date.

Interestingly, some men thought it was funny too.

For every guy who's upset, there's a guy who thought it hilarious. Kinda like the common joke nowadays of guys getting hit in the nuts. There are groups of men who want to get organized to get this sort of event treated seriously and not as a joke. Trouble is, the every day guy likes to play jokes on his fellow male friends where this event is likely to happen. And when they're in groups and this happens accidentally and one of their buddies ends up on the ground, groaning in pain, they all laugh.

I just streamed it from Amazon.

Getting hit in the nuts by, say, a little kid throwing a wayward ball can be amusing, yes. That's not DV though. Not sure I've heard of men playing jokes where they know their friends' nuts are going to get bashed. Given that virtually all men know how painful that can be, I doubt its a common thing to do. Having your dick cut off and tossed away like a piece of garbage is at quite another level.

I did a simple "guys hitting friends in the nuts" search on Youtube and got a LOT of videos.

Zombie Lake - Some German horror/comedy with nazi zombies eating naked women. 2 stars
Beyond the Door - Actually quite creepy. Though some of the acting was horrible. Certainly no Exorcist. 3 stars.

I want someone to make a film that will actually scare me. So far that's happened only a handful of times:

  • The Exorcist (First one, none of the others)
  • The Sentinel
  • The Wizard of Oz (Come on, that witch on the bike in the tornado! Flying monkeys! When yer 7?)
  • The Screaming Woman (Only saw once. Research reveals it was a one time play on television in the 70's)
  • Burnt Offerings (Critics are stupid. This is Oliver Reed [my fave actor] at his best, and the end is FREAKIN scary. Karen Black is scary enough without the old-lady get-up.)

(Available on Netflix)

Yawn.

CGI anime has that problem of being in the  uncanny valley. Things look oddly lifeless and weird, so if the characters and story aren't doing it for you, it's pretty hard to like. I suppose I might have liked this better if I watched the animated TV show or read the manga, but I didn't, so it was a bunch of characters I didn't really relate to getting violently dismembered. Ick.

I guess it would be a worthwhile watch if you're into that "gore porn" anime, which I'm not.

The Heart of the Sea

Great looking, but all the whale killing really worked to drop the sympathy level for the characters. I understand that you're supposed to view it for what it is (the true story of the Essex upon which Moby Dick was based), but ugh. All I could think of was Tommy Chong shouting, "Save the whales man!"

I give it a 5/10, but if I viewed it as a mature adult, it'd be like 7/10
