Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Hanna, 6/10; A mildly entertaining action movie starring Eric Bana and Olivia Williams. The plot revolves around a very young female super assassin and her father who are being hunted by the CIA culminating in a weird game of hide and seek in an amusement park for the final showdown between Hanna and the female CIA agent. It's a fairly standard action movie, car chases, fights, shootouts, skulduggery and what not and the usual super violent, sadistic henchmen.

I watched that some years ago. Done in a David Lynch like style. I did not expect it and was sitting there, mouth agape during the opening scenes wondering if I should take it seriously or not. It didn't take long to pick up on the off beat style which I can still enjoy. I thought it rated a bit better than a six myself. Maybe an eight.

There's a TV show of that now. Has anyone watched it and is it good?

It's...ok. Nothing special but not terrible either.

Star Wars IX - I'm assuming I was the last human to watch the film, so mild spoilers.

I'll add my impressions:

Star Wars was wonderful. Blew us all away.

The first sequel was also excellent.

The second sequel was a flat and tedious tying up of loose ends.

The three prequels were aggressively bad.

After that, two stand out:

- Solo was so uninteresting I didn't finish it.

- The one with Felicity Jones was good, even though everything about it seemed recycled.

The rest are an indistinguishable muddle. I can't even tell you whether I've watched IX.

Felicity Jones:

Haven't watched the last two or three, and won't be...

If superhero movies aren't your thing, I'd recommend watching 42 and his portrayal of Jackie Robinson. Inspiring example.

Sad thing, losing Chadwick Boseman.

Superhero movies weren't my Dad's thing, but he liked The Black Panther.

Richard Jewell

Clint Eastwood may be a crazy old coot when it comes to politics but he can still make a helluva movie. Outstanding performances by Paul Hauser as Jewell and Kathy Bates as Jewell's mother. 8.5/10

Went to the cinema Saturday. Not very packed.

Tenet - Second viewing. Didn't help elevate the movie, but still good.

The New Mutants - Actually pretty good. Would have liked to see a solo movie of Massie Williams character, Rayne.

Bill and Ted Face the Music - Never watched one before and the first half lived up to my expectations - dumb. Second half was fun though.

The Empire Strikes Back - it's The Empire Strikes Back.

Batman Begins - The beginning of a great two movie series which got a convoluted third film slapped on in the end. This film follows him as a child whose parents have died more than parents in a Disney film! Blah blah, you know the rest. A very entertaining film and i appreciate Scarecrow a bit more now. But there is one question. If a microwave emitter is evaporating the water in the water lines... why would the drugs come out of the blown out sewer manholes?

Wall-E - When you start thinking about this movie, almost nothing makes sense. Ultimately, they are able to create a massive self-automated ship that keeps everything clean... but couldn't do this on Earth?

Worse yet, we are 800 years in the future and they aren't going back to Earth anyway, but are still sending ships that somehow have enough ejection mass to be landing on the planet to drop off one probe?! And then there is the gravity issue. They've atrophied into ameboas, yet they all manage to be able to walk, when a guy that fell off his chair was incapable of moving.

I know, I know... you watch Wall-E after The Expanse and nothing makes sense anymore and you are targeting a light hearted cartoon with way too much criticism.

My original criticism of the film was it was much better when it was just the robots. Then it was the robots doomed humanity just to save Wall-E, because people won't be able to live on Earth for several reasons. Now, I'm too old and crotchety and think the movie fails from a science perspective. Boo!

Rocketman, 7/10; Stars Taron Egerton as Elton John in a biographical movie of the popstar's rise to the top. I did not know this was a musical before I started watching but it turned out very entertaining. It runs along the lines of the "Mama Mia" movie. The movie covers from the early years of Elton's life to his heyday in the mid 80s. The movie is interspersed with the usual toe tapping hits from Elton's vast catalog with a few entertaining dance routines. It's not an in depth look at his life but does touch on some of the important things that shaped the man.

Enola Holmes. 9/10

Millie Bobby Brown stars as the younger sister to Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. After her brothers moved away, her mother raised her alone, teaching her to think for herself, not be limited by the expectations of society, and have a well rounded education. When her mother disappears her brothers come back, and try to send her off to finishing school. She has other ideas.

Lot of great talent in this movie. Hope they make more

Two in a series of movies TCM is running that were directed by women:

Salaam, Bombay - Kids trying to get by on the streets of Bombay. Reality in your face. But the moral seems to be how no good deed goes unpunished. Still, very well done as it's shot on location. Interview with the director, and she says it's pretty typical of how these kids live. Many of the actors were street kids.

The Cave of the Yellow Dog - One family of contemporary wandering Tibetans living with their cattle on the Tibetan plateau. Husband, wife, and three young kids. Splendid desolation. Simple plot but nice insight into what their life is like. The kids are adorable.
