Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

On the whole it's an okay movie I suppose.

Bingo.

Top Gun: Maverick, 7/10; Released in 2022 this is a sequel to the incredibly successful 1986 Top Gun starring Tom Cruise. On the whole it's an okay movie I suppose. Lots of nostalgia and nods to the 1986 movie but it is ponderous and slow paced to get to where the movie becomes entertaining. The action scenes are pretty good but having to sit through the bulk of the movie before getting there was a bit of a chore.

British films tend to be much slower-moving than Hollywood films, and with less excitement. But even if you think Hollywood films are best, watching European films is a great change of pace. (I remember being slightly disgusted some decades ago when a large Blockbusters had ZERO foreign films.)

I just watched Living, a 2022 British (character study?) film starring Bill Nighy. Its screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro was adapted from the 1952 Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru. Any synopsis might make the plot seem too petty even for a slow-moving film, but I DID really like this film. IMDB gives it 7.2 points but I would give it more. It does get 96% Rotten Tomatoes.

Speaking of British movies, can anyone identify an interesting one (circa late 1990's or early 2000s) whose title eludes me? A journalist wants to write an article about hard-driving single women. His friend advises “Start with an individual and you end up with a type. Start with a type and you end up with nothing.” (or some similar paraphrase of a quote by F.S. Fitzgerald)

So the guy picks a woman, breaks into her apartment, needs to hide in the closet overnight when she returns. While in the closet he observes her secret behavior: For example she gorges herself (on chocolate cake and/or steak?) then deliberately vomits. At the end of the movie he seeks her out, but she recognizes him as the intruder from the brand of cigarettes he smokes.

What was the name of that movie??

I just watched Poor Things again this afternoon. I still can't understand how that snoozer Oppenheimer beat it for Best Picture.

Just rewatch Star Wars and you can enjoy virtually the same story without having to watch Tom Cruise.

Raintree Country

Apparently an attempt to make a “Gone With the Wind” equivalent for Elizabeth Taylor, this sweeping, epic turd isn’t even fun to make fun of. I watched until I got bored or utterly confused, usually within a few minutes, then skipped a half hour and tried again. At one point, Lee Marvin showed up, with full 19th century beard, as a Union Army grunt, and was the focal point for quite a while. Why? Beats hell out of me. Then it was Star Trek’s DeForest Kelly’s turn, as a Confederate officer who gets shot off his horse, and takes several days to die (if he ever does; I tuned out again). There’s drama, melodrama, lame battle scenes, etc., but it can’t even be arsed to throw in a bit of unintentional comedy.

168 minutes, less redeeming value than your average porno.

0 out of 10, only because the scale doesn’t allow negatives.

House (not the cool and quirky 1980s one).

The groan factor is sky high with this one. Think of any horror trope that's been used so often and so hard that its anus has prolapsed and this one has them. I kept close score and groaned 18 times in 21 minutes.

I was about to turn it off when I heard something at my front door. I kept the movie running while I went to the door. I opened it and there were 3 boxes from Amazon, including among them, Happy Nuts jock itch relief powder. Seriously, the product is called Happy Nuts. I needed that because of a ferocious case of jock itch.

My hard boiled egg boiler was there as well. So I applied the Happy Nuts, washed my hands and then went about boiling eggs (movie still running). I already had some boxes from a week or two before, which I leave out for the cats to play in until they get tired of the box and then throw them away. But this time I broke down all the boxes and went outside only to notice that I'd forgotten to bring in the trash cans yesterday. So I took the broken down boxes with me and threw them in recycle can. Then I brought both trash cans back into the side yard (movie was still running).

I then put the load of laundry into the dryer.

Oh, the movie. Yeah, it was fucking awful and I didn't bother finishing it.

For Movie Watching Purposes: 2/10
For Getting Little Chores Done: 10/10

Here’s some fun: imagine Tom Cruise playing Luke Skywalker.

Now this would be a proper use of AI.

The Quiet Earth -

"Come on out or I shoot the kid" Then shoots up the jesus crucifix.

The Lavender Hill Mob
British 1951

The Brand New Testament
Belgium 2015
g-ODD is a jerk. Abusive to his wife and daughter (and us).
His daughter runs away from home. Collects 6 apostles, and has a Brand New Testament written.
g-ODD tries to chase her down.
Mostly from the daughters viewpoint, and narrated by her. (in Belgin, so turn your captions on.)
7/10

Smile

Genuinely creepy possession horror flick. Not the demonic tyupe of possession but the kind where the possessed, a clinical psychiatrist, doesn't understand what is happening to her. Well worth a watch.
