Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Hobbit 3 - Battle of 5 Armies

Apart from about 5 minutes of decent footage concerning the banishment of Sauron to Mordor, nothing else really worth going to see. You know, lots of CGI, padding and generally just pointless action and story, including that utterly ridiculous subplot featuring a certain female elf. For those wishing to see the thing through only.

4.5/10 (being generous)

It can't possibly be worse than The Desolation of Smaug, can it? I plan to see it just for closure, but I don't see how they can get any farther from the source material than they already have.

The Hobit films are for very small children. With that in mind they are good. But please turn off your brain before entering.

As far as the source material go, I'd say it is unfilmable. So it's good they leave the source material. It's a meta-book, playing around with the medium. The main character of the book is the world. The plot is rediculous and incoherrent. It really doesn't make any sense. It's just a list of things happening without developing the characters or furthering the plot. The entire book is all transport. There's very little for the actors to act about.

Guardians of the Galaxy 10/10

No it's not deep. Just good 'ole campy space opera fun. Very well written characters. Ok, so the plot is absurd and basically just the hunt for a McGuffin. But I didn't care. I just loved being dragged along the roller-coaster. I love how they mixed in cheesy pop songs from the 80'ies in a way that completely fit the plot. That's touching on genious imho. The way the film is crafted took me back to when I first saw Star Wars as a child. It takes chances and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's an endless flirt with the audience. I loved it.

The Godfather 11 Starring the usual suspects of De Niro, Pacino etc. Still highly rated but I thought it's showing it's age as compared to Goodfellers, Casino, and their ilk. 8/10

Finally watched Star Trek: Into Darkness (6.5/10)

Decent start, action, characterization were ok for the most part. But the plot later on got ridiculous I lost almost all interest.

Also Chris Pine as Kirk is way too laid back. He has none of the fire or "wink and a nod" of Shatner.

Honestly, I really wish that the actor for Bones was playing Kirk, he has more charisma. Uhura was great and so was Scotty. Sulu needed to be better written.

Into the Woods. Great entertainment if you like musicals. It was a cross between The Princess Bride and Sound of Music. Many funny laugh out loud scenes (although my daughter and I seemed to be laughing more than much of the audience......)

Divergent 8/10

A teenager in a faction-segregated society takes the test to determine what faction she belongs into. This is the start of an adventure that questions who she is, where she belongs and the underlying politics of their reality. I really liked this movie, watched it with my sister. The acting was pretty good and the scenes were not as predictable as the usual teen fare. Now I want to read the books.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 5/10

I'd heard that this movie was bad because of Megan Fox. I just thought it was bad because I still liked the old movies. Maybe they didn't have as much flash as this one did, but they seemed less stupid/silly. Especially The Shredder. I wanted to stop watching when I found they'd turned him into some sort of metal monstrosity. I thought it was lame. I gave it a five for the times it made me laugh.

Here Comes the Boom 8/10

This one surprised me. A high school biology teacher on the verge of getting fired finds himself in the middle of controversy when he challenges the school's decision to cut the music program. Vowing to raise the $40,000 necessary to save his friend's job, he embarks into the world of mixed martial arts tournament fighting. This one made me laugh a lot. I also have a soft spot for the plot - a struggling school and the music program. I recall my own high school had similar struggles at one point, but the students were the ones making noise to raise money. It's just a fun, silly movie about a serious subject. So I liked it.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

I didn't see anything new. I mean, it's OK to use the same old character types or plot lines, but it's gotta have a new spin on it.

I give it a hearty meh.

6/10

Just saw all Indiana Jones movies in one go. Seen together with the rest the Crystal Skull wasn't as horrible as made out to be. The Indiana Jones movies are all campy and stupid. The characters are shallow and stereotypical. All caricatures. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's all done with a wink and a nudge. The Crystal Skull fits in with the rest nicely. Introducing aliens into the mix is no more bizarre than anything else they've introduced. I mean... a ten minute rollercoaster ride through a mine, complete with jumps and whatnot is no less believable than aliens building pyramids.

I'd say the Last Crusade is the weakest link. Simply due to a weak script. Lots of loose ends. Confusing and unconvincing motivations. Boring conclusion.

1) 10/10
2) 10/10
3) 5/10
4) 7/10

The Trip to Italy 6.5/10

I saw the first one...I can't wait to see the next one, "The Trip to Luxembourg".......Ok, not true...I can wait.

Horrible Bosses 2 This sequel to the original 2011 hit about three guys who take revenge on their horrible bosses is, quite frankly, horrible! However when the ring ins include Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Christopher Waltz, and the central trio are first-rate comedians who can riff on a rubber hose, they elevate the substandard material they have to play with.
6.5/10

Mystery Men

7/10

This indie comedy about superheroes doesn't always work, but at a minimum it is a very interesting failure, and at times it's more than that. A fantastic squad of character actors and actresses make up the cast: Hank Azaria, Claire Forlani, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Greg Kinnear, William H. Macy, Geoffrey Rush, Wes Studi, plus cameos for Ricky Jay and Tom Waits (Tom Waits in a superhero movie?!). Even Ben Stiller, who normally annoys me just by existing, is pretty tolerable in this one.

The Three Stooges The 2012 remake. While trying to save their childhood orphanage, Moe, Larry and Curly stumble into a murder plot. Their antics stopped been funny 50 years ago. Had it not been for Sofía Vergara who kept me glued to the screen with her ample cleavage I would have changed TV channels. 4/10

Parental Guidance Typical feel good movie about a set of grandparents who are called upon to babysit their hardly ever seen grandchildren. The days that follow are filled with good and bad times - as you would expect from two different parenting styles that clash.

7/10 and I would watch it again.

Gangsta Granny
2/10
So this had the kind of silly plot ideas that intrigued me
Basically a kid finds out that his Grandmother is a famous jewel thief, and they plan to steal the crown jewels, because....bonding?
But the actual execution is just so bad
And the biggest problem is that the actually funny and interesting plot was buried by the stupid and pointless dancing plotline that eclipses a big part of the movies middle
It wasn't funny and just completely killed any interest in this movie

The Interview - 7/10

A standard Seth Rogan movie and exactly what you'd expect of it. Some really funny parts and some lame parts. It was nice to see Kim Jong Un blown up.

Interstellar - 10/10

Absolutely fantastic science fiction movie akin to 2001: Space Odyssey. Also, I think the TARS is going to be one of most iconic robots in cinema right up there with R2D2, Optimus Prime and Robbie the robot. You'll see.

The Hobbit 3 - 5/10

I guess you have to sit through this if you watched either one of the previous ones. Otherwise, don't bother. It seems rather pointless because you know what's going to happen, and the characters themselves are paper thin caricatures. Also, while it is beautifully done the overall experience seems flat for some reason... paradoxically more so if you watch the 3D version. Don't get me wrong, I like the 48 frames per second "soap opera" look, but I don't understand why the hell do they make all the far shots look like miniatures?

Guardians of the Galaxy - 8/10

This movie really speaks to my inner child. If I were 10 years old, this would be the most awesome movie ever - a bit like Star Wars combined with Last Starfighter, but only better. But as an adult I do have to notice that the plot is typical formulaic Marvel movie. I liked the humor and the characters are sympathetic. The after-credits scene was disappointing.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - 8/10

Steve Carrell plays a washed-up magician who's lost his way. Pretty funny, especially the ending. (Edited to add: Don't watch the trailer. It makes the movie look cheesier than it is and ruins some punch lines.)

Hunger Games: The Mockingjay Part 1 - 8.5/10

Enjoyable and mostly faithful adaptation of the book. Though some might consider it a slower-paced movie than the others, I think they chose right to make the book into two movies and not gloss over the plot. However, I noted a couple of differences from the book that may be hinting at larger differences in the plot in the next movie.

I don't think it was slow, just that not much actually happened over the 2+ hours. The film never lagged.

I agree. I was saying that *some* might, simply because there weren't a lot of action scenes, especially compared to the previous two movies.
