Who did it better?

Black Pumas v The Beatles

At first listen of Black Pumas I was like oh dear. But if you listen to just a couple of times it's actually very, very good and they did a fantastic job of making it their own. I'm going to give the win to The Beatles but Black Pumas have come very, very close, almost a tie. Almost.

A Beatles song, With a Little Help From My Friends. A rare occasion where Ringo is lead vocal.

An iconic performance from Joe Cocker performing at Woodstock.

And Scottish band Wet Wet Wet

The original Beatles version is a fairly simple arrangement whereas Joe Cocker goes balls to the wall and totally creates a different, almost unrecognizable piece of music. The Wet Wet Wet version is a rather bland poppy version.

Joe Cocker for the win!

I never posted up With A Little Help From My Friends? Must be because it is so blatantly obvious a deaf person would make the right choice just based on the Cocker video alone. One of my favorite performances.

Piece of something, anyhow.
I disliked his “rendition” intensely at first listen. My opinion has softened over the years, but I still don’t like it.
One of his many girlfriends owed me money and never made good, and that may have influenced my dislike at the time. But mostly I felt like he disrespected the structure. Parts-ed it out for his own build, so to speak. He could have done that to anything, so why that? I still think George Martin’s “simplicity” is more inventive and less simple than most listeners appreciate.

Indeed you did, my bad. :(
Whew. So I'm not losing it.
person, woman, man, camera, TV
Yep. Still got it.

The "Shoop" song Betty Everett v Cher

Live

Both singers have incredible voices but the Cher version is better imo due to better quality production and an entertaining video.

Dion v Racey Runaround Sue

It's a great song, a real toe tapper, very catchy.

I think Racey wins this one.

I remember running into the lead singer after Racey had played at a nightclub I was in, back in the early 90's. He was a really really nice bloke.

Well, much to my surprise I found out that "One Step Beyond" by Madness is a cover

The original is by Prince Buster, a Jamaican musician.

Madness wins this.

Strongly disagree. The musical production wasn't that bad, but the video is god-awful, as so many were from that era.

Madness were very much fans of, and inspired by, Prince Buster. They covered a number of his songs, including the eponymous "Madness":

Which was the 'B' side of their debut single.

The A side was "The Prince", a tribute to ... well, you can probably guess who:

Oh dear.

Paramore tackle the Talking Heads classic, Burning Down The House

Oooft, the Paramore version is pretty bad unfortunately. It would be darn near impossible to get near Talking Heads level but this is not a good choice of song.
