Will the Hillary Email Scandal Blow Over?

Will the Hillary Email Scandal Blow Over?

Not if the Republicans can help it.

- - - Updated - - -

I think it will be investigated, and will amount to very little if anything. Perhaps some mistakes made in the use of the private email, but unlikely leading to any charges. It will "blow over" in the way that Travelgate and Filegate blew over because there was nothing there, but conservatives will still cite them as evidence of criminal history.

I would take the bet.

^^^ That exactly

Not if the Republicans can help it.

It was a clever move for the Republicans to plant this "Inspector General of Intelligence Services" guy in the Obama Administration. And to trick Hillary into getting her own server. And to send her all those classified emails.

We seldom give them enough credit for their cleverness and foresight here.

What the press reports and what actually happened, e.g. what, if any, laws were violated are usually two different things.

She's been accused of so much horse-shit over the years that has amounted to nothing more than empty accusations that it's hard not to be inclined to just wait this one out and see what happens. Whether it will cost her the nomination is immaterial. She doesn't have a likable persona. Whatever the case may be in reality, in public she comes off like a 4th grade teacher scolding a group of dim 9 year-olds.

That would leave Bernie as the frontrunner. That puts the GOP in the White House. He may appeal to young people and leftists but he isn't going to appeal to centrists and those just left of center. The guy refers to himself as a socialist. I personally like that, but that word ("socialist") is something the U.S. simply isn't ready for. But then again, I never thought I'd see a black man be POTUS so who knows?

But someone like Biden seems more likely. But damn, Biden's pretty old too.

Fuck it. Just vote for a statue of Jesus.

Don't worry. Hillary's still going to win the election next year. There's not actually a need to be concerned.

I read somewhere today that if she has to she will run the US from prison. :)

It's not news here. So that probably means it's not a real scandal at all, and exists only in the political bubble of US presidential electioneering.

If a US Presidential Candidate does something that will likely result in a major problem for his or her campaign, then I would expect to hear about it in the local press; I haven't heard any such thing - the local press here are covering Donald Trump's inability to become president, and have not mentioned Hillary once, which leads me to conclude that there are no real scandals currently affecting her campaign.

(The Benghazi 'scandal' was likewise pretty much ignored outside the US, indicating its status as a political beat-up, rather than a real news story).

I was unaware that your local press was a bell-weather for the remainder of the nation. Alas, the rest of us are depending on the blistering criticism from folks of every persuasion - NYTimes, Washington Post, Politico, The Hill, Huffington Post, NBC, etc. And, for some inexplicable reason, we think it has something to do with her collapse in the polls, and the majority of voters favoring a criminal investigation.

Thankfully, for those in denial, you can refer them to your local press.

My local press is a bellwether BECAUSE IT ISN'T PART OF, OR EVEN ANYWHERE NEAR your nation.

The pure 'noise and fury' stories from your country simply don't get reported in the rest of the world; our distance from you gives us a much better perspective.

Oddly, we even have the ability to recognise the possibility that other nations might exist - something which apparently never even occurs to many Americans, even when it is explicitly stated

So you local presses "bell-weather" ignorance and indifference to events in the US gives you 'the much better perspective' on what, your affection for local Aussie parochialism?

The "noise and fury" is of consequence in the US because they are over real events that affect elections of interest to most here. That you cannot appreciate it due to your "local press" suggests this thread might be a tad too cosmopolitan for your comfort.

You can't see a city with your face pressed against the wall of a building.

The noise and fury is of no consequence; but you are too close to the source of the noise to be able to separate the important from the trivial.

Of course, you needn't take my word for it; You are perfectly at liberty to simply be wrong, if you so choose.

[and the majority of voters favoring a criminal investigation.

Source please. The voters I know have no opinion or believe it is just politics.

The conservative news sources are repeating a Monmouth University Poll (FWIW?)

“Even though most voters feel Clinton’s intentions may have been acceptable, a majority (52 percent) say that her emails should be subject to a criminal investigation for the potential release of classified material. Another 41 percent say the emails should not be subject to this type of investigation,” notes a Monmouth University Poll released Wednesday. “Most Republicans (82 percent) and a majority of independents (54 percent) support an investigation, while two-thirds (66 percent) of Democrats are opposed.”

I think the electorate has moved on. Most people don't care. Everybody else has already made up their minds that either she did nothing wrong or or she is the Whore of Babylon.

IOW

Nothing to see here. Move along.

There IS one thing that could change that...well, part of it, anyway.

If some relatively objective folks like the Inspector General's office finds that she did enough wrong for criminal charges to be brought against her - meaning her guilt would be decided in a court and not in Congress - then maybe the former could be convinced she did something wrong.

If she's exonerated by the IG's office and no charges are filed, the latter will continue believing - as they have since 1992 or so - that she's the Whore of Babylon...or worse, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Yes, it's always much more convenient to set up your own server and pay people to run it than to use the one your employer provides for you.

And when I fly I find it more convenient to build my own plane.

Which is the main point of this. The GOP has been crying wolf non-stop over so many "scandals" for Clinton over the past couple of decades that nobody's really caring too much, even if it ends up that this is an actually legitimate one.

At worst, some "overzealous staffer" is going to fall on their sword and do a few years in jail in exchange for a six-figure salary in a lobbying company once he gets out.

Wow. It's like you can see into the future present state of US politics. :p
