Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Predator: Badlands

Relevant plot synopsis: the antagonist predator becomes the hero via what is apparently an incompetently programmed synth and a cute monkey-like creature. More to the point, Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.

It's not the worst iteration of these flicks, but in its clumsy, half-assed attempt to be original it largely falls flat. I was super bored so I paid $25 to watch it on Amazon Prime. If you want to see it, just wait until it shows up on your favorite streaming service.

Whatever/10

To each their own. I hate science fiction and have been criticized for that, but do I give a fuck? Nope!
That’s because idiots who hate science fiction never understand the insults that science fiction-loving geniuses fling at them! If they understood they’d truly be pissed.
Or maybe it's because I like real science and find science fiction to be boring as hell. ( another fiction that I dislike )
I watch/read science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction science, whatever. I enjoy it all personally.

That's cool. As I said earlier, we all have different tastes. I used to love fiction but about 15 or 20 years ago, I lost my interest in it, so I rarely read fiction any longer. The only Sci Fi movies I ever watch these days are comedies, like "Space Balls" for example. I liked it when I was younger but we sometimes change as we age.

I did actually see the latest Superman movie with my son when we were in Indy and I was surprised that I enjoyed it. Maybe it was because I was with him or maybe it was that the action was exciting and it had been a long time since I watched any action movies, other than the old Shaft movies, which I still like, oddly enough.

I'm not super into comic book stuff (one of the things I'm not into heh) but fun fact, one of our family friends is Michael Cudlitz, who played Lex Luthor in Superman and Lois. He was also in The Walking Dead, Southland and Band of Brothers. He was friends with one of my uncles in school, I've met him a couple times too, cool guy.

I hear you!! Though I couldn't watch Spaceballs ...
"The last (thinking ...) probably the ONLY Sci Fi movie I ever actually WATCHED was the brand new groundbreaking release, Star Trek (the movie).
(sorry for yanking your chain SoHy)
Anyhow,
That was in a universe far far away, long long 49 years ago.
Never really cottoned to the AV sci fi genre, but movies in general tax my golden retriever attention span. Too much wrong stuff in SF movies and I can't get past it.
Superman (George Reeves) was awesome, but again I was 6-8 years old and that was a 30 minute show. Coincidentally I was 30 months old when it debuted. But was it really sci fi, or "just" fantasy?
Robby the Robot, Space Family Robinson and many others - all trash.
45 yrs later ...
Red Dwarf was great - small doses of wrong stuff at comically epic extremes, and the best of it purely visual. But that's its own genre and movies in general are way too long. I believe RD proved that, with a long episode that didn't really work.

sohy, watch Gattaca and The Abyss and get back to me. I think you would enjoy both. Science fiction isn't really the whizz bang stuff that gets the name these days.

Gattaca is one of my very favorite science fiction movies. In this day and age it seems that simply being in space makes something science fiction, even if it would be better described as an action or horror movie.

Finally got around to watching The Thing (1982), and yup, I see what all the fuss is about. (10/10)
I am very much NOT a fan of gory horror type movies, but that is IMO an excellent film, and one for which I will always make an exception.

Just don't watch the opening sequence if you speak Norwegian, because the Norwegians in the helicopter give the whole plot away...

Never mess with aliens. 🫤

I'm too busy watching Law and Order SVU and we've only made it to Season 10, so I have 16 plus seasons to go. We even watched the two hour combo special last week. The series is extremely imaginative, even if it's unrealistic. Otherwise, it's comedies for me these days along with watching old Al Pacino movies and a few outstanding dramas that I've seen countless times. We did watch "Amadeus" a week ago. Sure it was mostly fiction, but the acting and the story line are fantastic. And, the Mozart soundtrack was awesome.

Always has been very relevant to me since I first saw it, I was born with a genetic condition myself. One of the movies I try to rewatch every year.

I haven't seen Ruthless People since a few years after it came out, but it has always epitomised comedy for me.

Watched it last night and it didn't disappoint, even though the surprise element wasn't there.

The only film that made me roll around more, at the first viewing, was The Holy Grail.

We watched that movie about a month ago. It was great. We had a copy of it but if I watched it before, I don't remember. There are times when Mr. Sohy puts a movie on and I don't pay attention, so that might be why.
For example:
I've seen "Back to the Future" a couple of times but it cost about as much to stream it as it did to buy a copy, so I bought one, but I wasn't in the mood to watch it, so I read while he watched it. It is a good movies though, considering it's science fiction.

That's not science fiction. This *THX 1138* is science fiction. : )

I watched two movies today. The first has probably already been mentioned, but is worth mentioning again. It is '12 Angry Men' (the original 1957 version). Very well made movie with a great cast and superb acting. Directed by Sidney Lumet. I give it an 8, as I rarely give a 9 or 10 grade, although it is worthy of a 9. I may have seen it before, but if so it was many decades ago. It confirms for me that the Jury system is flawed, though any alternate is also flawed.

The second was 'Nuremberg' (2025). Again a well-made movie that I could rate an 8, but am giving it a 7.
There are two ironies associated with this movie, the first being (and I think the movie subtly includes reference to this) the current situation in the USA, and also Israel and Russia, when consider what Nuremberg was about - establishing and upholding international law, and responsibilities of governments to their people.
The second irony relates to a problematic issue with the movie, because of the way it depicts Hermann Goering as a victorious hero (he is played charismatically by Russell Crowe). This is emphasized by the end note about the fate of the putative hero of the movie. This means that neo-Nazis and MAGA may actually like this movie.

12 Angry Men was really good. I have probably mentioned before that I saw the play, when I was a kid, inside Pentridge Prison acted by prisoners and staff. Gives the thing a certain piquancy.

Another good film from that era was Fail Safe. Am I the only person in the world who remembers it? I was quite young but have never been able to forget it.

I have a list of movies like this. Take Paris Trout for example. See what I mean? So forgotten, it's not even on Dennis Hopper's Wikipedia filmography list. If I knew how to edit that damn thing, I would. Dennis Hopper, Barbara Hershey, Ed Harris; unforgetable!

Fail Safe had the misfortune of being released shortly after “Dr. Strangelove”, which took a slightly different approach to nuclear annihilation. I have read that Columbia Pictures bought the distribution rights for Fail Safe so they could delay its release until after Dr. Strangelove’s debut. It came out nine months after Strangelove.

Sidney Lumet directed 12 Angry Men and Fail Safe. They’re very similar in style.

Paris Trout was apparently a “made for TV” movie, which could explain it low profile. It’s on Hopper’s IMDB list.

I own a DVD of 'Fail Safe'. There is a 2000 remake version by George Clooney that is quite interesting as it was a live TV broadcast theatrical version. If you like 'Fail Safe' another movie I recommend (which I also own on DVD) is 'The Bedford Incident', a1965 movie about a confrontation between a USN destroyer and a Soviet submarine.
