Mitch McConnell Gone?

To add the above, even though I know this is one of my many character flaws, I hope McConnell suffers.

Tough crowd.

I do wonder, though, how many here are against the death penalty for the worst-of-the-worst-of-society because it's "inhumane and barbaric".
Not I.
If a person has long since proven themself to be a scourge on society, they should be removed from society by whatever cost effective means that are convenient. I do not feel society has any obligation to maintain such an offensive individual.
If you aim for cost effective, life without parole is cheaper than the death penalty.

Personally I don't oppose the death penalty because it's inhumane, but because 1. It was never an effective deterrent for crime. 2. Innocent people may be and have been essentially murdered due to it. Of course the right winger will likely just oversimplify the argument and pretend the only reason is "inhumanity". But I'm just a crazy morally pure radical leftist who cares if innocent people die.

Under our current system of justice, that may very well be true. Under mine, Luigi Mangione may very well be guilty of nothing more than taking the law into his own hands.

While I do think this thread immediately went a rather declassé direction (and that hating a guy like Mitch McConnell is at best rather pointless) it does seem to me that passively wishing someone harm on a dislikeable public figure is a very different type of thing than voting on a potentially harmful public policy. Mr McConnell does not actually get stomach cramps when ZiprHead beams angry thoughts at him. Nor does it cost taxpayers anything for ZiprHead to love or hate the political celebrity du jour. It's a completely inconsequential activity, unless you believe in magic.

Heard his wife is in China and has been there for quite some time.
I think she left 3 days after he was hospitalized. I wonder if this is her activating her escape hatch when it all comes crashing down.

Would t be something if McConnell’s death were a tipping point?

Also read that two Congress critters claim they visited him and had lengthy conversations with him. So he’s being kept alive by machines..
It's so that she can't be asked to terminate life support as far as anyone can tell.

She's the only one who can have life support terminated.
Can't she just send a text?
"Hey yo, it's Mitch's wife. Ya'll can go ahead and pull the plug lol"

I opposethe death penalty because I think it is morally wrong. It is not applied fairly or equitably, for starters by even if it were. There are at least two problems:

1. We may and in fact do execute innocent people.

2, if we are convicting and imprisoning people for taking lives, I think it is morally wrong for the state to take a life.

This is more a personal reason, so I’m separating it:

There are some number of individuals who are guilty of such heinous crimes that if the were convicted and sentenced to death, I would happily pull that lever over and over until my arm fell off.

Thst is not justice. That is anger and revenge.

It’s wrong. It would be wrong for me to do it and it is wrong for the state to do it.

No death penalty. It is not an effective deterrent. It is not applied equitably. It includes people who are wrongfully convicted. It is wrong to murder. It is unjust.

Same here. In order for it to be an effective deterrent is if there were tens of thousands of televised sham trials where the defendant was executed Soviet Union style.

"Your sentence shall be carried out shortly."

"Wait, wha--"

BOOM!

Commentator Scott Jennings said he spoke to Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Tuesday morning, contradicting claims the 84-year-old senator became braindead amid a weekslong hospital stay.

But.......

KEY FACTS

Jennings said in an X post he spoke with his “old friend” Tuesday morning, saying he spoke to the senator for nearly 20 minutes about “IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history.”
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., spoke with McConnell on Monday and Tuesday, according to NOTUS, which cited a spokesperson for Thune who said the two “had a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security.”
Reporter Desirée Townsend backed up claims made by far-right activist Laura Loomer on Monday that McConnell was officially braindead and on life support.
A McConnell spokesperson told multiple outlets last week the senator was recovering in the hospital and “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
Paramedics performed CPR on an individual experiencing a “cardiac arrest” at a known address for McConnell, NBC News reported, citing police scanner audio.
McConnell was found unconscious the morning of June 14 and transported to a local hospital in an Advanced Life Support ambulance, according to Punchbowl News and the New York Post.
A representative for McConnell confirmed to multiple outlets last month the senator was admitted to a hospital and was “receiving excellent care,” and that a week later he was “working closely with staff on Senate business.”
However, even as a representative for the senator said he was working with staff this week, it is still not clear what his prognosis is.

I guess we have no idea if the guy is still brain dead or alert enough to talk to his friends. Weird!

I did say it was a character flaw of mine to hope McConnell suffers.

But none of that has jackshit to do with the death penalty or someone's support for it. I am against the death penalty in general because I don't think the justice system is infallible and because the state should not be in the business of executing people.

Oh nooo I thought the TDS guy might think Renee Good deserved it oh nooo
Good god...
Explain how it was unreasonable of me to think how the guy who assumes people have TDS would think that then.
Dude, what is your obsession with me about TDS? I have used it maybe a handful of times on this forum since Trump was elected. BFD.
Dude, what's your obsession with assuming people are mentally ill if they have concerns about Trump?
TDS is just a slang term for people overly obessed with Trump. It is not a mental illness per the DSM, nor did I ever claim it was. Sheesh.
The irony here is that indeed, plenty of people DO have Trump Derangement Syndrome. It’s called MAGA. You’d have to be seriously deranged to consider Trump a reasonable candidate for anything, much less POTUS.
Irony or hypocrisy or mirror speak. After all of the obsession over a dress with Clinton, the relentless political attacks and investigations into him... to hear people consider getting uppity over the guy who tried to get a mob to riot and steal the election in 2020 is "deranged"... is in itself, quite deranged.
Indeed, the real problem is the Trump Normalization Syndrome, aka "sanewashing", by the GOP.

Trump does something batshit crazy that would have led to the resignation or impeachment of any past President, and a huge chorus of pundits and talking heads start telling us all how normal and unexceptional it is. And this is a weekly occurrence.

The trick is to have so much crazy that before the latest crazy shit has been digested, the next crazy shit is pushing it out of the headlines.

None of it is normal, reasonable, or acceptable.

I strongly oppose the death penalty, not because I don't believe that there are people who deserve to die for their crimes, but because I don't believe that we have, or ever can have, a justice system that can correctly and reliably identify those people.

Taking the law into your own hands is literally the worst offence you can commit in a civilised society.

The removal of law from the hands of victims and placing it in the hands of supposedly impartial and dispassionate judges and juries is the cornerstone of civilisation, and if we do not protect it at all costs, civilisation is doomed.

Indeed, we measure civilisation by the presence or absence of rule of law.
