California Doing California Things

There should be a law against combining certain food groups, like vegetables with sweets. Would you pour chocolate sauce on an ear of corn and eat it?
Mole sauce contains chocolate and vegetably things like chili peppers, onions and garlic.
Mole sauce? Is that like Gopher gravy that Granny on The Beverley Hillbillies used to make?

Seriously though, I've had mole sauce. It's just OK, IMHO. Never liked it enough to order it in a restaurant.
I’ve never seen it offered as a stand-alone dish in a restaurant.
FWIW it has chocolate in it.
Generally, one does not just order a bowl of mole sauce. Its part of a main dish, like chicken mole.
I cook with it fairly often. Especially chicken! Mmm.

Having fervently held and vigorously defended positions on food is definitely a popular Californian pasttime, bonus points if the cuisine is foreign or otherwise obscure. Alas, Mexican doesn't count, unless it's something specific we don't often make here.

Clearly meant to be dipped in coffee.
The trick, with Tim Tams, is to nibble off two diagonally opposite corners, and then use the remaining biscuit as a drinking straw to draw up a mouthful of coffee, liquifying the biscuit itself, and leaving a gooey treat held together by the melting chocolate for just long enough to eat it.

Do not attempt when wearing a white shirt.

My experience is that Americans seem to like their food much sweeter than I find pleasant. But each to their own.
Indeed. Servings are also seem to be too large.
Yep. There are literally hundreds of videos of FIFA tourists amazed at our soda serving and meal sizes. Also amazed at how fat we all are. Go figger.

We do go pretty overboard on serving sizes. And sugar. And salt. And partially hydrogenated soybean oil. And preservatives. And plastic wrapping. And carbonation. But other than that, we are very sensible eaters!

Ironically, many Americans do not like fizzy water, but it is very popular in Europe.

Locals are furious after the park under the Hollywood Sign allegedly sees fruit vendors defecate and urinate before serving food. Exclusive photos obtained by The California Post appear to show unpermitted sellers using the bushes at Lake Hollywood Park before returning to slice and sell products to customers. The images were provided by outraged residents who say they have spent years documenting vendors relieving themselves in the park, dumping wastewater into the street and leaving behind piles of trash while city officials have repeatedly failed to stop the growing operation. “It’s disgusting,” longtime resident Cindy Cobb told The Post. “They go to the bathroom in the bushes … then they come back. Mind you, there’s no hand washing because there’s no bathroom. They’re urinating and defecating in a park space, and then they come back and cut fruit.”
Residents also say vendors are dumping dirty wastewater into storm drains and streets, leaving behind fruit containers and plastic utensils, and creating fire hazards by cooking inside a designated Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone beneath the Hollywood Hills.

One of my aunts was a local legend for being able to do that. I could never manage it, nor my siblings.
But she did with with the coffee!
I tried with heated up chocolate milk.

Do not attempt wearing any clothes. :hysterical:

Is there anything edible in your food?
Naturally. Indeed, Californians are, stereotypically, obsessed with health food, especially if it comes in greenish packaging with a leaf on it somewhere.

You guys are weird.

I am overly sensitive to bitter tastes and I cannot help but always be overwhelmed by bitter in coffee, Brussels sprouts and IPAs no matter how well prepared/great quality, etc.

I wish it was not so but!

I hate sweet on my vegetables!

I am somewhat addicted to chocolate, the darker the better. Apparently chocolate overrides my over-sensitive bitter tastebuds.

NYT has a wonderful recipe for Chocolate Coffee Whiskey cake. If you use a private browser you can get around the paywall.

The recipe also includes cloves Abd black pepper. Sounds awful, right? Especially if you hate coffee and whiskey like I do.

It is not. It is truly delicious.
Try this chocolate with espresso beans. I want to see what happens.

I've had some versions of elotes that you would definitely not like. I can't recall chocolate dipped ones exactly, but sweets? Por cierto. The trick is to also make it spicy as hell.
Sweet and spicy is a classic combo, and not just in México.
This is what drew me to Tiger Sauce. It's sweet and spicy without having an overwhelming vinegar taste so prevalent in most hot sauces.

I have! Maybe a different brand---don't remember. It wasn't terrible but still for me, a lot of coffee flavor that I found overwhelming. Not worth the calorie hit for me.

And as a kid, I used to sometimes sneak unsweetened bakers chocolate from the top cupboard....

As a kid, I did the same with baker’s chocolate…once.

Dubai "Chocolate" Covered Strawberry? Uh, no thanks. I wasn't all that hungry anyway.

And I guess I have my "shockingly unexpected answer" to the relieving yourself problem in this post.

What do you think caused this situation? What do you think should be done about this situation? What are you doing about this situation?
The local politicians whose policies allow this stuff to start in the first place and continue for years are the ones who are on the hook for answering those questions. And why do you keep asking "what are you doing about this situation" to a local town citizen? Other than reporting these situations and paying the taxes that are supposed to be used to abate these kinds of things, what do you expect local citizens to do? Kindly tell them to leave and hope they take your advice? Threaten the cart vendors with firearms? Bring in your own bulldozer? Give them free room and board in your house so they don't have to do it at all?
