American schools to punish children for walkout protests

Numerous schools in Canada joined the US walkout to show solidarity with their southern brothers and sisters and the number of repercussions they faced was zero. They also didn't have to go through locked gates or any of that weirdo bullshit to get off of the school property.

If they do not punish one protest, they may not punish all protests.

They are required to have a policy that is independent of the view being expressed.

First, the March 14th walkout was not prompted nor organized by the Women's March Organizers. Second, the politics of these organizers has absolutely nothing to do with the issue of gun safety. Third, none of this has anything to do with Donald Trump.

But, all of this was just another excuse for someone to ride his hobby horses in public.

In general it's impossible to protest anything and not have it be an expression of a viewpoint.

When I read the thread title I thought this was hyperbolic, and that by "punish" you meant something like not give them a special extra opportunity to re-write a test or do a lecture twice so they can be there the second time, etc. But this is actually legit about punishing them as in suspending them simply for skipping class one day and did something school officials disagree with in their private time? That's absolutely absurd. I can't fathom how anyone could argue in the favour of the schools doing this.

A high school teacher in California was placed on leave on Wednesday after she questioned what she said was a "double standard" in the nationwide school walkouts.

This teacher seems to get this whole "viewpoint discrimination" business. It's funny they suspended her for knowing how the 1st Amendment works.

What's wrong with staging a walkout to protest abortion and which schoolboard disallowed that? If a bunch of students feel like the mass murder of babies is an important topic that they want to draw attention to and this gets them active and engaged in the political process, they should do it.

This teacher's comments are good and she should be commended for making them and not punished.
