American schools to punish children for walkout protests

Well, that is four districts. Schools, if they are smart, would have realigned the schedule for that day, set the time aside and said, 'You get this one, any future ones will need to be discussed.'

Even if it was only four districts, it would be zero districts in a country that values both freedom and the lives of children.

Numerous schools in Canada joined the US walkout to show solidarity with their southern brothers and sisters and the number of repercussions they faced was zero. They also didn't have to go through locked gates or any of that weirdo bullshit to get off of the school property.

But the US has a tremendous trade deficit with Canada, according Presidunce of the United States. Prolly caused by Canadian kids using a political opportunity to get themselves out of class.

As was mentioned in the last thread about this, public schools are not allowed to engage in viewpoint discrimination.

If they do not punish one protest, they may not punish all protests.

They are required to have a policy that is independent of the view being expressed.

Because god forbid that anybody ever has school officials engage in anything related to thinking. What kind of example would that be for the children?

Actually, it turns out those who engage in "thinking" would be aware that viewpoint discrimination is a violation of the First Amendment and against the law.

Welcome to America, where begging for tort life is a controversial political position.

Tort life? I am imagining a high-powered plaintiff's lawyer, Armani suit and all the accouterments but then sporting a beanie with "Tort Life" emblazoned on it, a la 2pac.

What are they protesting? That law schools graduate too many graduates these days, and so "tort life" is not as easy to be had as in the days of OGs Cochran and Kardashian?

Interesting and rather disturbing thing about this Walkout Protest: it is being organized by the same people who organized the Women's March.
Women's March organizers are planning a national student walkout to protest gun violence

The women running the Women's March, and now this Walkout, have some disturbing political alliances and positions. Linda Sarsour supports Sharia Law. The March as a whole supported the BLA terrorist and convicted murderer (of a police officer) Joanne Cherismard. They also supported the Palestinian terrorist and murderer Rasmea Odeh who lied about her past on her citizenship application and recently got deported.
And oh yeah, Tamika Mallory, one of the founders, is also a big fan of the anti-Semite and major-league racist Louis Farrakhan.

But they are against Trump so they must be good, right?

Hardly. Many Democrats have been sounding the alarm at some of these women, and at the Democratic party not taking antisemitism seriously enough.

They didn't organize the walkouts.

Also, is “We don’t want to die” really a political viewpoint?

First, the March 14th walkout was not prompted nor organized by the Women's March Organizers. Second, the politics of these organizers has absolutely nothing to do with the issue of gun safety. Third, none of this has anything to do with Donald Trump.

But, all of this was just another excuse for someone to ride his hobby horses in public.

I've got to admit, that took longer than I expected.

In general it's impossible to protest anything and not have it be an expression of a viewpoint.

When I read the thread title I thought this was hyperbolic, and that by "punish" you meant something like not give them a special extra opportunity to re-write a test or do a lecture twice so they can be there the second time, etc. But this is actually legit about punishing them as in suspending them simply for skipping class one day and did something school officials disagree with in their private time? That's absolutely absurd. I can't fathom how anyone could argue in the favour of the schools doing this.

A high school teacher in California was placed on leave on Wednesday after she questioned what she said was a "double standard" in the nationwide school walkouts.

...

“And so I just kind of used the example, which I know it’s really controversial, but I know it was the best example I thought of at the time — a group of students nationwide, or even locally, decided ‘I want to walk out of school for 17 minutes’ and go in the quad area and protest abortion, would that be allowed by our administration?" she told the television station.

“If you’re going to allow students to walk up and get out of class without penalty then you have to allow any group of students that wants to protest,” she said.

This teacher seems to get this whole "viewpoint discrimination" business. It's funny they suspended her for knowing how the 1st Amendment works.

What's wrong with staging a walkout to protest abortion and which schoolboard disallowed that? If a bunch of students feel like the mass murder of babies is an important topic that they want to draw attention to and this gets them active and engaged in the political process, they should do it.

This teacher's comments are good and she should be commended for making them and not punished.
