Trump and neocons started War with Iran in order to win elections?

It is unclear if this was:
- an attempt to win an election
- an attempt to distract from impeachment
- they are simply fucking idiots
- Soleimani was genuinely a bad guy who needed killing

Lots of people “need killing”. Problem is some killing can end up causing a hell of a lot of collateral killing.

Well, the Iranians want to see Trump remain office about as bad as the majority of the people on this forum do. So with that in mind, how do the Iranians respond? What does Trump want to avoid? A protracted war costing the US much blood and treasure in a foreign land no one cares about? I think they will avoid any retaliation that may cause a wave of patriotism and support for Trump. I think all we’ll see is a ramping up of violence in Iraq. Force Trump to stay engaged there.

The government of Iraq is in an extremely weak position, and that is why they essentially turned their backs and allowed the US embassy to be attacked briefly. Suleimani was thought to have been one of the strategists behind those attacks, and his name was prominently displayed in graffiti left on walls around the embassy. It is quite possible that Iraq will now feel compelled to expel the US. The most likely response is initially is that US facilities and individuals will be targeted for terrorist reprisals. Iran has a lot of options for responding to this kind of provocation, but an all-out war will likely result in the bottling up of oil exports out of the Gulf.

Indeed.

Did anyone see the cut from 2011, where Trump was saying that he just knew that Obama was going to start a war with Iran because that's the only way he could get reelected? I doubt this is going to help Trump get reelected. But who the fuck knows anymore!

I don't see how this is going to have a happy ending.

President Ellipsis said:
General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more...but got caught! He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number....

....of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself. While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!
Wait... directly or indirectly responsible for the death of "millions"? As in plural, more than 2,000,000. What in the hell is Trump talking about?

Also, killed or wounded thousands of Americans? So he gave up on 600, and up'd it to thousands? When does Trump say he was responsible for Alderaan?

The dis-information campaign begins.

Trump Says He's 'Not Keeping Anything Under Wraps,' About Meetings With Putin

"I'm not keeping anything under wraps. I couldn't care less," Trump said in an interview with Jeanine Pirro on Fox News on Saturday night.

Trump's denials follow a Washington Post report Saturday that "U.S. officials said there is no detailed record, even in classified files, of Trump's face-to-face interactions with the Russian leader at five locations over the past two years."

Current and former U.S. officials told the Post that after a 2017 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hamburg, Germany, Trump took his interpreter's notes and told her not to speak of details of the meeting with other administration officials.

"This is just at odds with how presidents have conducted diplomacy for decades and decades in the United States," said Washington Post reporter Greg Miller in a Sunday interview with NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro on Weekend Edition. "He's taking steps that suggest that there are things being discussed here that he doesn't even want his staff to hear about or to understand."

Trump had one such meeting (via phone) on the day of the airstrikes that caused this to begin with:

Trump, who is beginning the second week of his holiday vacation in Florida, took the phone call with Putin as he prepared to play a round of golf at his club in West Palm Beach.
...
On Sunday, Trump's national security adviser Robert O'Brien appeared on a morning talk show around the time the call with Putin was taking place, though O'Brien didn't discuss the conversation. Other top national security officials, including Pompeo, were in Washington overseeing airstrikes on an Iranian militia group in Iraq. Pompeo later flew to Florida to brief the President on the strikes before returning north.

It isn't known which officials listened to Trump's phone call with Putin. But administration aides have described a general tightening of call participants following the fallout from Trump's July phone call with Ukraine's President, which ultimately escalated into a congressional inquiry and Trump's impeachment.
...
"Nobody is allowed on the calls," a White House official said, describing the new effort to limit those with access to the calls to only the President's senior-most aides, barring some senior and mid-level career staff from listening in. "The barn door officially closed after the horse escaped."

All roads lead to Putin.

"If someone tells you Iran is an existential threat to the United States they're a liar."

- Tucker Carlson

Trump makes no sense.

He says he wants out of the ME and an end to "endless wars", but at the same time wants Israel and SA to be the regions power brokers, all while provoking Iran.

If ever there was a reason for Iran to want to build a nuclear weapon, this would be it.

You dont see Trump killing any North Korean generals. The only way for a small country to avoid getting messed with is to become a nuclear power. It is sane. It is intelligent. And it is rational.

And for the liberals who are crowing about Trump doing this to avoid getting removed from office in a time of war. Who started the fake impeachment in the first place?

There is no fake impeachment - it exists and there are reasons for the indictment (that is what the House did).

First, as LD pointed out, it's not fake. Second, are you actually trying to equate an impeachment process for demonstrable crimes with concocting false reasons to start a war in order to bolster his re-election chances? That his war crime is somehow the fault of Democrats lawfully and justifiably impeaching him?

Wtf?

Impeachment is irrelevant. This has always been the plan. It's been the neocon plan for the last 20 years. Taking over Afghanistan and Iraq leads one to next take over Iran. It's the geography that makes it obvious.

Some 15 years ago I said that this would happen, but my expectation was that it would be after Iraq and Afghanistan had more stability.

Trump tried to frame himself as a non-interventionist or isolationist but his actual real self is Chief Neocon and it's not the kind of neocon that wants to save the world with democracy at the end of a gun either, it's the corrupt kind that wants to install friendly governments for resources. Now the question of a ground invasion right now would be pretty insane because Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan are not at an ideal level of stability. But if you look at what Trump has done, you can see this has been a longer term endeavor than just right now that he's been impeached.

Don't get distracted by small news and instant gratification sensationalism. This assassination news is significant, yes, but it's a small part of a larger pattern that's been going on.

Take note of the following article:
It Sure Looks Like the Trump Administration Is Preparing for War With Iran

That was from back in May of this year before impeachment.

Welcome to 2020 folks! Come on man, you can't miss 2019 already it's only been 3 days!

Trumpo sure has a strange way of getting us out of all those middle east entanglements he promised to fix.
