What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

 
 
 
Star Trek - Strange New Worlds

Finished season one. I like it in part. Struggles with too many we're all going to die episodes. It'd been helped by having the old school length season for character development. It also felt a bit rushed for 10 episodes. But good enough to get Season 2 a go.

Hey I didn't know we could do YouTube. In that case I highly recommend Ozzyman's Reviews. He's a very funny dude from some big island near New Zealand who makes hilarious videos featuring people falling down, and lots of other things.

Oh, and I've been meaning to ask, Emily, what is that in your avatar?

When the episodes run around an hour each, I think they should count. But I'm not in charge, so who knows.

A jumping spider of some sort, but I don't know what species.

Brilliant/a-hole detective and partner are dumped into a new, poorly funded department to investigate cold cases after they semi-recover from being shot. They look into the disappearance of a prosecutor four years earlier. Interesting story, very good acting. Made me want to binge it, but also made me want to make it last. Hoping for a second season.

I found out after watching it that there are also movies based on the book series.

I watched this a few weeks ago. I agree it’s very good and a clever plot line.
 
I've been bingeing 3rd Rock. Loved it 30 years ago, love it still.

What happened to the Big Giant Head? I swear they were in constant communication but Harry hasn't turned into a radio once in 3 series.
 
I really got into The Lazarus Project recently. Quite intense and brutal in ways. Just starting season 2.

People who have died in the past couple weeks come back to life, but as (almost ) regular people, not zombies. CDC guy joins small town law enforcement, who have more issues than Time magazine, to investigate. Interesting twists and some humor.

Agree with you! I watched the TV series first, loved it. Can't wait for season 2. Bought the book. Didn't like the book. I didn't get past page 50.

I bought the trilogy and couldn't get past 50 pages....then skipped to the last chapter and still couldn't get interested. Yet the TV series is interesting.

I bought the trilogy and couldn't get past 50 pages....then skipped to the last chapter and still couldn't get interested. Yet the TV series is interesting.

I've heard similar things to Wicked. Book boring, musical through the roof.
 
Oh, that's not true. The book Wicked is bizarre, and frequently disturbing, but it is not a boring read. There's an orgy-fueled mass murder, an implied case of vagina dentata, and attempted infanticide all in the first chapter. It just gets way too freaky early on and stays that way, especially for people who only saw the stage musical and are expecting a traditional heroine. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is the same way. Movie is a bit wacky but comprensible, book is pure, cocaine-fueled madness.

I've been rewatching Northern Exposure with my partner, who never saw it when it was on air. Pure gold. It has the set-up of a wacky situation comedy, but the tone of a dramedy, and dives surprisingly deep into the social issues of the 90s. That sone of its jokes and convos have not aged well actually just adds to its relevance, because they fit the setting. Which is supposedly Alaska, though Washingtonites know it was actually filmed in Roslyn, WA, hence why the main coffeeshop in town is called the Roslyn cafe. :)

I haven't seen the TV show, but I thought the Three Body books were excellent.

I befriended a family in Mountain View a few years ago, who had lived in the Seattle area back in the '90's. She gave birth to twins and they were chosen at a casting call for Northern Exposure. IIRC, it was a recurring role, but I don't remember what character on the show gave birth (I rarely watched it during its run). She did tell me some behind the scenes gossip that the cast and crew were actually all pretty nice, except Janine Turner who was a rather entitled little bitch on set. That was pretty disappointing, as I had a little crush on her back then. Apparently, she moved to Texas and is now some whacko right wing local radio host now.

Thanks for the reminder. I have series 1 & 2 of Northern Exposure on DVD and it would be worth a revisit, for the reasons you give.


I watched a little of Snowpiercer.

I can't come at many, many aspects of the basic premise. Once you think that a perpetually moving train isn't the answer to the problem nothing that happens in the plot is of interest.

Perhaps I missed some episodes that pull it into line.
