Assad falls

The impression that I get (from what I've heard) is that the "rebels" aren't noble revolutionaries fighting for freedom and democracy. They just managed to overthrow a decrepit dictatorship that's only survived because of support from another decrepit dictatorship which has recently been exposed as a paper tiger.
Zackly my impression as well.
Another lot just like the last lot, but possibly worse.

I wonder if any other leaders of “allies” of Russia are sleeping with one eye open.
Indeed. Russia either chose not to help Assad, or were unable to help. Either possibility has to be a huge worry for any regime propped up by Moscow.
Indeed, though I'd say Syria was the weakest link. Russia couldn't help. They need North Korea's help just to try and take postage stamp sizes of land daily in their Ukraine debacle.
I presume you found evidence for NKeans in Ukraine? If so you should contact elensky immediately.

.
Syria sucked. Ask the locals. But Assad was a stable sucking. And the US/CIA had understandings with Assad. Why the White House isn't jumping for for joy over this. No one really is, except the locals who didn't like Assad. Hopefully things work out in Syria. But we can probably be somewhat certain it won't be great because the new leader isn't going to get money from an International Power to secure the nation. Which means power vacuums in areas. Unless Russia is uber desperate to keep access to the warm water port. If the Muslims in Burma can fight with the Myanmar military, why not Islamic terrorists teaming with Russia?

So much easier to overthrow a nation than to rule a nation, forget rule it competently. US was a nice example of that starting in 2003.
I'd be surprised if they made a deal with the Russian devil, the assholes who have been killing so many Syrian civilians over the years.

I think both Russia and the new Syrian leadership will be very pragmatic about this. Syria needs friends so has strong motives to play nice with Russia. Russia will want to keep its bases.
Bases are history. Assad was a difficult partner for Russia and this former ISIS commander does not instill any good expectation or trust.
Assad was not a good ruler. He allowed corruption to rise beyond any means available to him and at the same time he refused an investment deal with .... Russia which would have increased his economic means at the the price of increasing Russian business influence. In the end corrupt army commanders were simply bought out by the opposition.

Apparently Assad left a thank you note.

The new guy is making good noises about respecting everyones religion, etc.. We shall see.

South Korea is a weird country.
I remember reading a recent news about some worker strike at Samsung or something.
And their demands were mentioned there. And I don't remember the exact number but I was surprised at how low their wages were. SK has ridiculous inequality. Add corruption and nepotism. Remember North Korea food problems in the early 90s?
Well, apparently SK had people starving too, not becasue of shortages of food, but becasue of prices and low wages of low wage workers in SK.

Could be worse. Could be your buddy's in North Korea.

The point is, they are not that different for lower ranks.

Well, President of SK seems to disagree with you. His official reason for dismissing the parliament was their pro-NK-ness.

Meanwhile Israel creates a buffer zone for the Golan Heights on Syrian land and selectively bombs various sites around Syria. Betcha those are American bombs they're dropping. Not a good look at this stage of the game.
Depending on what sites are bombed, why not? And Syria is still highly volatile - nothing wrong with a buffer zone.

This is a map I found here. As you can see, it's not like HTS managed to conquer all Syria - it's more that Syrian Arab Army (Assad's forces) melted away. So things might still get very chaotic. For example, what about the Kurds (in yellow)?
skynews-map-syria-map_6771658.png

I am a bit surprised Hezbollah did not try to intervene. Yes, they have been greatly weakened by their war with Israel, but HTS' lines must have been stretched thin with their rapid advance southward, and Lebanese border is right where they were advancing. No way did they have the manpower to secure their flanks and rear properly.
You're right. There is nothing wrong with a buffer zone. So if Israel wants a buffer zone for their people, they should create one within their own border, at a minimum, the border recognized by Israel and Trump and no others. But no. Leave it to Israel to forever take a little more of what doesn't belong to them. We'll see how long they see fit to keep this "buffer".

Why would they need "lines" and need to concern themselves with their "flanks" if the opposing force "melted away"? Their biggest threat right now seems to be falling rounds from celebratory gun fire & Israel.

At least France and Germany are taking the right tack agreeing to work with the new government as long as basic rights are observed.

The rest we'll have to wait and see.

I don't know whether to pose this query in the Assad Falls thread or in the Is Netanyahu a War Criminal? thread. Either way:
:mad: o_O :cry::unsure::flooffrown::realitycheck::picking_a_fight::goodevil::whisper::worried:

What The F**king F*ck??? !!

After many decades, the Syrians finally overthrow their own version of Saddam/Donald/Benjamin ... and ... The Israeli War Criminal targets Syria with massive air strikes, and now has troops within a few kilometers of Damascus?? :confused2:

What gives? Netanyahu NEEDS enemies and was afraid the new Syrian regime wouldn't be anti-Israel enough? He wants to make sure political power goes to the most extreme anti-Israel jihadists??

Or did Yahweh's 3500 year-old promise of Land include Syria as well?

They claim they’re just securing the border.

In the meantime, Assad goes back to practicing!

There is no one overlooking the weapons in Syria at the moment. Israel is acting to take some of the stuff out before the terrorists who overthrew Assad, as well as any other terrorist group gets them. The US is likewise doing the same thing. Unlike Afghanistan when the US left behind useless crap, Assad left everything behind. Of the things to be critical of Israel on, this isn't one of them. They are being proactive as their national security is at risk from the fall of Assad.

My geography is rusty. I could have swore South Korea was roughly on the other side of the world from Syria.

Agreed. Turkey is also bombing the shit out of Syria right now.

It would be so nice if the Syrians could decide for them selves what sort of life/society they wished to have instead of outsiders sticking their oars into the water.
But that will not happen.
