Biden's executive orders on Day 1

Plus, I am highly skeptical that certain posters here even give a shit about union workers or any average hourly worker for that matter.

Me too, though probably for different reasons, and maybe the posters you're thinking of ain't the ones I'm thinking of.

Agreed. The impeachment trial must be a mechanism that prints an indelible "S" on the foreheads of every member of the Sedition Caucus.
I'd recommend appointing as many Special Prosecutors as necessary to keep the shenanigans of every one of those scumbags in the news until after the '22 elections.
Optimally we might get some thrown out. Are any of them from States with Dem Governors?

... this time there will be witnesses, so we'll see how that goes I guess.

QFT

Can we get Aldo Raine to do that?

If we never wanted anyone to lose jobs we would never progress. Didn’t anyone care about the blacksmiths? Didn’t anyone care about the horse breeders?

There is a difference between some jobs going away through natural evolution of the labor market and jobs going away because government hampered their industries.

We will need oil and natural gas for decades to come, and it is best to make as much of it domestically. Unlike blacksmiths, these jobs will not go away, they will be shifted to Russia or Saudi Arabia as wihout fracking we will need to import more of our oil and gas.

For the sake of the planet, for the sake of a sustainable, livable ecosystem, for the sake of the generations who will succeed us, we better push for better fuel economy in our vehicle fleet, the promotion of renewables, and a reduction of profligate one-time use of plastics. The price we will pay for ignoring climate change is starting to become clear, and it's not hype, and it's going to get drastically bad in this century unless (or even if) we take steps now.

Ya sure. "Evolution" favors government subsidized jobs for reasons as yet unexplained.
Some jobs need to learn how not to be "hampered by government" that won't give them taxpayer money.

No, really - in the long run it would be best to remove subsidies and let oil & gas die a "natural death", instead of paying through the nose fiscally and environmentally to prop it up artificially and postpone the inevitable.

So, you *can* spot a false equivalence?

Anyway, even if they go away due to capitalistic pressures rather than governmental ones, that is cold comfort for those who are out of a job, right?

I agree that we will need oil and natural gas, which is why the best approach is a multi-pronged approach to energy, with transitions to renewables where we can while limiting fossil fuels to those specific industries that will need to maintain them. It's just that there's been no coherent long-term strategy to solve the problem, just a lot of ostriches with their heads in the sand hoping the problem just goes away if we don't look at it. And people preventing change by crying about lost jobs in industries that are killing the environment doesn't help. There could be an approach that helps these people find new jobs while also combating climate change. But some people would rather not give up the short term gains even if it means for devastating long term losses.

It was an interesting proposal from Schumer yesterday... getting rid of ICE vehicles by 2030 and of IC engines entirely by 2040. Turn the subsidies toward electric vehicles and infrastructure to support them. Lots of new high paying jobs, lots of opportunity in both areas and blah blah blah. Schumer is claiming support from everyone from UAW to GE, GM and FoMoCo.
I'm sure there will be lots of examination of these proposals with equal and opposite "experts" popping in and out of existence like virtual particles.
The only sure thing is where we are headed if we DON'T change course. And that is a singularly ugly picture.

Biden signs racial equity executive orders

Details: Biden will direct the Department of Housing and Urban Development to examine how previous administrations undermined fair housing policies and laws, according to senior officials.

Another executive order directs the attorney general not to renew Justice Department contracts with privately operated criminal detention facilities. Domestic policy czar Susan Rice confirmed at a press briefing that the order does not apply to private immigration facilities, which fall under the Department of Homeland Security.

One executive order calls for "re-establishing federal respect for tribal sovereignty" following years of tension between tribal governments and former President Trump.

Biden also ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to examine how Trump's rhetoric about COVID-19 may have led to discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The last one is a "meh" to me. We know it happened, we know why it happened. Why spend money on it?

GOP Sen. Rand Paul says that Biden's push for a $15 minimum wage reflects a 'hate' for Black teenagers

GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky on Friday came out swinging against President Joe Biden, saying that the Democratic president's push for a $15 minimum wage would hurt Black youth.

During an interview with Fox host Sean Hannity, Paul alleged that a minimum wage increase would put 4 million people out of work.

"The people who lose their jobs first when you hike up the minimum wage are Black teenagers," Paul said. "So, you know, 'Why does Joe Biden hate Black teenagers?' should be the question. Why does Joe Biden want to destroy all of these jobs?"

He added: "Even the government says that nearly 4 million people will lose their jobs."

Yeah, sure. Rand Paul cares about black kids.

Rand is saying that the only way for everyone to be happy is if they are all equally miserable.

Isn't that what people like him say that's what Democrats want?

He only like black kids if he can use them for panger fodder.

While I don't think he cares there's truth here anyway--it would be bad for them.

Is it 4 million people will lose jobs?
Or 4 million jobs will be lost?

Because if somdone is working three jobs to survive, and two jobs fold, but the third becomes a survivable wage, losing two jobs there is actually an improvement. One commute, one uniform, no need to read a 3x5 card to know how to answer the phone at this particular hour....

Maybe even enough time to start taking some college courses in the evenings...

Biden orders DOJ to end private prison contracts as part of racial equity push
  • President Joe Biden ordered his Department of Justice not to renew its contracts with private prisons, one of multiple new planks of Biden’s broad-focused racial justice agenda.
  • It was one of four new executive actions after Biden laid out his racial equity plan.
  • The actions are aimed at combating discriminatory housing practices, reforming the prison system, respecting sovereignty of Tribal governments and fighting xenophobia against Asian Americans, especially in light of the Covid pandemic.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "This is great development & important step.

There’s more to be done to end the for-profit caging of people in the US. We must include ending for-profit immigrant detention & examine the use of for-profit services that squeeze families of the incarcerated in public prisons, too." / Twitter

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "This Obama-era rule was reversed under Trump. It’s great that it’s being restored so quickly. We can and should organize for more.

It’s time to push so we can also end for-profit immigrant detention, abolish the death penalty, reduce overall incarceration, & more." / Twitter

Yeah, you also need a Twitter account and an ego the size of Manhattan.

When a company splits one full time job into 2-3 part time jobs, are they creating jobs? No. They are not. They are splitting one job and being shittier to each of the three workers than they could have ever been to the one. They are turning one job into three shit jobs.

When the society shifts in such a way that these jobs get recombined into a full position, it is similarly not the loss of a job, it is the improvement of a job moreso than even the sum of it's parts combined.

To use any other kind of calculus to represent it is straight up wrong. These are not "whole" jobs but fractional jobs with an "shit component" to them. So not only do you get the same work out, you get less shit when they recombine to whole positions.

Well, yeah.
That's why i asked, is this estimate 4 million people suddenly on Unemployment, or 4 million for-lack-of-a-better-word-"jobs" that represent work that still needs to get done, but not under quite as shitty terms? Maybe by one person over a week rather than 4 people without benefits?

Biden Freezes U.S. Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia, U.A.E.
New administration is reviewing weapons transactions earlier approved by Trump

The Biden administration has imposed a temporary freeze on U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as it reviews billions of dollars in weapons transactions approved by former President Donald Trump, according to U.S. officials.

The review, the officials said, includes the sale of precision-guided munitions to Riyadh, as well as top-line F-35 fighters to Abu Dhabi, a deal that Washington approved as part of the Abraham Accords, in which the Emirates established diplomatic relations with Israel.

U.S. officials said it isn’t unusual for a new administration to review arms sales approved by a predecessor, and that despite the pause, many of the transactions are likely to ultimately go forward.

But in line with campaign pledges made by President Biden, Washington is seeking to ensure that American weapons aren’t used to further the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, where its conflict with the Iranian-aligned Houthis has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths and widespread hunger.
